Singapore’s CapitaLand Investment announced on Wednesday that it plans to more than double its funds under management (FUM) in India by 2028, increasing from S$7.4 billion ($5.66 billion) as of June 30. The announcement comes just hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled arrival in Singapore on Wednesday.

This initiative is part of the company’s broader goal to reach S$200 billion in global FUM by 2028, according to the real estate investment manager.

“India is drawing interest from global corporations and institutional investors seeking high-quality real assets,” said Group CEO Lee Chee Koon. He added that the company would also explore opportunities in the renewable energy and real estate private credit sectors in the country.

Last month, CapitaLand launched a fund focused on business park development in India, which is expected to add S$700 million to its FUM.

This is a developing story, and more details are expected soon.

North Korea Floods Lead to Execution of 30 Officials

0

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un may have ordered the execution of around 30 government officials for failing to prevent the deaths of over a thousand people during recent floods, according to reports from South Korean media. The flooding and landslides in Chagang Province resulted in numerous deaths, injuries, and widespread displacement.

North Korean authorities have reportedly vowed to take severe action against those who, it is alleged, could have done more to prevent the casualties, as reported by Chosun TV.

HT was unable to independently verify the accuracy of these claims. Due to the extreme secrecy of North Korea, it is difficult to confirm details, but the North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that Kim Jong Un ordered officials to be “strictly punished” after the devastating floods that hit Chagang Province, near the Chinese border, in July.

During an emergency Politburo meeting in Sinuiju, Kim Jong Un reportedly demanded severe punishment for those he accused of neglecting their disaster prevention duties, which led to “unacceptable casualties,” according to KCNA.

Investigations are ongoing into the conduct of Kang Bong-hoon, the dismissed Party secretary of Chagang Province, who previously served as a deputy director of the Munitions Industry Department and was known to accompany Kim Jong Un on inspections, according to the report.

The northwestern province experienced severe flooding in July, leaving thousands homeless and causing significant loss of life and injuries. South Korean media suggest that the death toll could surpass 1,000. North Korean state media reported that the heavy rain flooded 4,100 houses, 7,410 acres of farmland, and many public buildings, roads, and railways in Sinuiju and the neighboring town of Uiju.

Makers of film ‘Emergency’ move to Bombay HC For its Release

Zee Studios, co-producers of the upcoming film ‘Emergency’ starring Kangana Ranaut, has filed a petition with the Bombay High Court requesting an official copy of the film’s certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

Zee Studios claims that although they were notified of the film’s certification on August 29, the CBFC has yet to provide an official copy. With the film’s release slated for September 6, Zee Studios is seeking immediate intervention from the court.

The plea, scheduled to be heard by Justices BP Colabawalla and Firdosh Pooniwalla on Wednesday, accuses the CBFC of unlawfully withholding the certification. Notably, the CBFC informed the Madhya Pradesh High Court earlier today that the film has not yet received a censor certificate and will not be released on September 6. It was revealed that the film was certified last month, but the certificate was put on hold due to objections. Although the certificate was emailed, a physical copy was not provided.

The petition before the Bombay High Court supports the CBFC’s current stance. According to Zee Studios, withholding the certificate violates the Cinematograph Act, which requires that certification be communicated in a prescribed format within five days of submission. Zee argues that without this certification, they cannot screen the film, which would cause irreparable harm and infringe on their fundamental rights to free speech and to conduct business under Articles 19(1)(a) and 19(1)(g).

‘Emergency’ is a biographical political drama depicting the significant period of the national emergency in India in 1975. The film’s trailer, released on August 14, has already garnered nearly 300,000 views on YouTube. However, following the trailer’s release, public interest litigations (PILs) were filed in the High Courts of Madhya Pradesh and Punjab, seeking to halt the film’s release, alleging that it inaccurately portrays the Sikh community.

Musk Says X’s Algorithm Can’t Differentiate Between Outrage From Approval

0

Elon Musk, the tech visionary and CEO of Tesla, recently used his platform to highlight an important aspect of its algorithm. In a widely discussed post, Musk openly explained how the algorithm interprets user interactions and the potential issues associated with this system.

Musk’s post emphasized that the X algorithm operates on a basic premise: if a user engages with certain content, the platform assumes the user wants to see more of that type of content. He noted that one of the most significant indicators of user interest, according to the algorithm, is when users share posts with friends. “The 𝕏 algorithm assumes that if you interact with content, you want to see more of that content,” Musk stated. “One of the strongest signals is if you forward 𝕏 posts to friends, it assumes you like that content a lot, because it takes effort to forward.”

However, Musk also acknowledged a notable flaw in this system. He pointed out that the algorithm is not yet sophisticated enough to differentiate between content users genuinely enjoy and content they share out of outrage or disagreement. “Unfortunately, if the actual reason you forwarded the content to friends was because you were outraged by it, we are currently not smart enough to realize that,” Musk admitted.

The post also raises questions about the future development of X’s algorithm and whether changes will be made to better understand and respond to user behavior. As Musk continues to guide the platform through its ongoing evolution, managing these algorithmic challenges will likely be crucial in shaping the user experience on X.

Meanwhile, Musk appears to have made a mistake in his series of posts opposing the ban of his social media platform X (formerly Twitter) in Brazil. In a meme shared on his X account, which suggested users in Brazil were using VPNs to access the site, Musk inadvertently used a meme that referred to the platform by its former name—Twitter.

A MiG-29 aircraft belonging to the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed in Rajasthan’s Barmer district on Monday night due to a ‘critical’ technical malfunction. Fortunately, there were no casualties.

“While on a routine night training mission in the Barmer sector, an IAF MiG-29 experienced a critical technical snag, necessitating the pilot’s ejection,” the IAF stated in a post on X.

The Air Force confirmed that the pilot is safe and no loss of life or property has been reported. “A Court of Inquiry has been ordered,” the IAF added.

The crash occurred in a remote area, away from populated regions, according to Superintendent of Police Narendra Meena, as quoted by PTI. Meena also mentioned that fire trucks could not reach the crash site due to challenging terrain.

Previous incidents:

  • On August 31, a helicopter being towed to Gauchar for repairs by an MI-17 chopper of the IAF crashed in the hills near Kedarnath. There were no casualties as the helicopter was unoccupied.
  • On August 21, an object fell from an IAF fighter aircraft in the Pokhran area of Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer. The incident took place in a remote location with no damage to life or property. Residents heard a loud bang about a kilometer away from the village and found debris scattered around.
  • On June 4, a Sukhoi 30 MKI fighter jet carrying two pilots crashed in Maharashtra’s Nashik. Both pilots ejected safely.
  • On March 12, a Tejas light combat aircraft (LCA) crashed near Jaisalmer in Rajasthan during an operational training sortie.
  • In February, a Hawk trainer aircraft crashed in the Kalaikunda area of West Bengal during a training sortie.
  • In May 2023, a MiG-21 fighter jet crashed during a routine training sortie, resulting in the loss of three lives.

CBI Gets 8 Day Custody of Sandip Gosh

0

A Kolkata court on Tuesday remanded Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, along with three others, to CBI custody for eight days in connection with alleged financial irregularities at the state-run institution.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had requested a 10-day custody, arguing that a significant network involved in the corruption case needs to be thoroughly investigated.

“We have just arrested four people. There is a larger network that must be uncovered, and we require their interrogation. We need their custody to reveal the full extent of this nexus,” the CBI stated in the Alipore Judges court.

On Monday, the federal agency arrested Ghosh, his security guard, and two vendors who supplied materials to the hospital, where a 31-year-old trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered last month.

The CBI has named Ghosh in a First Information Report (FIR) and charged him under section 120B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for criminal conspiracy, in conjunction with section 420 of the IPC (cheating and dishonesty) and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

The investigation into financial misconduct at RG Kar Medical College gained traction after new allegations surfaced from the former deputy superintendent of the facility, Dr. Akhtar Ali.

The agency has also registered cases against several entities, including M/s Ma Tara Traders, M/s Eshan Café, and M/s Khama Louha, in connection with the corruption case.

Saina Nehwal Talks about Retirement

0

Ace Indian shuttler and former Olympic bronze medalist Saina Nehwal has disclosed that she is struggling with arthritis, which has made it challenging for her to maintain her usual training schedule. As a result, she will need to decide on her future in badminton by the end of the year. The 34-year-old, who was the first Indian badminton player to win an Olympic medal with her bronze in the 2012 London Olympics, has competed in three Olympic Games but has been plagued by injuries in recent years.

The gold medalist from the 2010 and 2018 Commonwealth Games acknowledged that her career is nearing its end.

“My knee is not in good condition. I have arthritis, and my cartilage is in a bad state. Training for eight to nine hours has become very difficult,” Nehwal said on the ‘House of Glory’ podcast, hosted by shooting legend Gagan Narang, who was India’s chef-de-mission at the recent Paris Olympics. “How can you compete with the best players in the world in such a condition? I think I have to accept this reality. Training for just two hours isn’t enough to compete at the highest level and achieve the desired results.”

Nehwal is still contemplating the impact of retirement but admitted that she would have to make a decision soon. The trailblazing athlete, who is also a member of the BJP, last competed over a year ago at the Singapore Open, where she was eliminated in the first round.

“I’m also thinking about retirement. It will be difficult because it’s like a job for a regular person. A sportsperson’s career is always short. I started playing at the age of 9, and I will be 35 next year,” she said. “I have had a long career, and I am proud of it. I have pushed my body to its limits. I am happy with what I have achieved and given it my all. I will evaluate how I feel by the end of this year.”

The Padma Shri awardee mentioned that competing in the Olympics was her childhood dream, and missing the event for two consecutive editions has been painful. “Competing in the Olympics is a dream for everyone. You work towards that goal for years. So, when you realize you can’t make it, it hurts a lot. It’s not that you don’t want to play, but your body tells you otherwise, and you have injuries,” she shared.

Nevertheless, Nehwal takes pride in her Olympic journey. “I have worked very hard. I competed in three Olympics and gave my 100% in all of them. I can take pride in that and be happy about it,” she said.

Nehwal also spoke about the pressure of expectations, noting that as a top athlete, she has faced it not only from the public but also from those close to her. “When you become a prominent player, your friends, family, coaches, and sponsors all expect you to perform well. There are many stakeholders involved,” she explained. “Given the already short career span, athletes can’t afford a four-year break; they have to keep performing. To become an international champion, you have to be strong enough to make tough decisions,” she added.

US Military Uses Dating Apps to Warn Iran

0

In a recent escalation of psychological tactics against Iran, the US military has issued a warning to the Islamic State and its affiliated terrorist groups, cautioning them against attacking the United States and its allies.

The US military conveyed this message through the Tinder dating app, broadcasting it across Lebanon, as reported by the Washington Post.

The profiles, written in Arabic, warned, “Do not take up arms against the United States or its partners,” and emphasized that the US “will protect its partners against threats from the Iranian regime and its proxies.” The message was accompanied by images of US warplanes. The use of Tinder, a platform primarily known for dating and social interactions, for such a direct military communication surprised many.

Tinder, known for its “swipe right” (to accept a match) and “swipe left” (to reject a match) features, is an unconventional choice for military messaging. A US official familiar with the ad campaign confirmed to the Post that it was associated with CENTCOM.

Meanwhile, Lebanon-based freelance writer Séamus Malekafzali shared on X that he had seen an ad on Tinder in Lebanon from CENTCOM in Arabic, stating, “Do not take arms against the US and its partners,” and mentioning that F-16s and A-10s were ready to act, highlighting the US’s commitment to protecting its partners from threats posed by the Iranian regime and its proxies.

Following this, Tinder withdrew the advertisement. A defense official explained to the source that the Department of Defense conducts military information operations to support “national security priorities,” and these must comply with US law and DOD policy, underscoring their commitment to adhering to these guidelines.

According to the Post, the use of the most popular dating app in the US to deliver the military’s message raised questions about the military’s online communication strategies.

Several officials and scholars criticized the use of Tinder for such messages, arguing it was ineffective in reaching a broad audience and described it as “an unforced error or laziness.”

The message was perceived as a direct threat to Iran, warning against its threats to destroy Israel, the Post reported. Tehran has frequently pledged to retaliate for the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, though Israel has neither confirmed nor denied involvement. Tinder removed the ad after being contacted by the Post, citing a violation of its policies on violence and political messaging.

9 Maoists Get Killed in Chattisgarh Encounter

0

A joint team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) killed nine Maoists during an ongoing encounter in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district on Tuesday, officials confirmed.

The operation was initiated following intelligence reports suggesting the presence of Maoists in the area, according to officials.

Police reported that the encounter started around 10:30 am and is still in progress. “So far, nine Maoists have been killed, and a significant number of weapons, including a Self-Loading Rifle (SLR), a .303 Rifle, and a .315 Bore Rifle, have been recovered from the site,” a police statement said. “All personnel involved in the operation are safe. The search is ongoing, and more information will be provided once the operation concludes,” it added.

Late last month, Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired an inter-state coordination meeting in Chhattisgarh, focusing on intensified anti-Maoist operations amid ongoing efforts.

From December 2023 to August, 147 Maoists were killed in 104 encounters, with 723 arrests and 622 surrenders, according to government data. The Union government has increased the establishment of forward operating bases (FOBs) in Maoist strongholds to support coordinated intelligence-led operations and assist civic authorities in developing remote villages. Since December last year, 33 FOBs have been established, including four in Sukma, eight in Bijapur, two in Dantewada, four in Narayanpur, and one each in Kanker and Rajnandgaon in Chhattisgarh.

In August, the government informed Parliament that the geographic spread of Maoist violence has decreased from 126 districts across 10 states in 2013 to 38 districts across nine states in 2024, with incidents of Maoist violence dropping by 73% since 2010.
