Visa Free Thailand is Bringing in Thousands of Indians

0

Indian travelers are heading to Thailand in unprecedented numbers.

According to data from the DGCA, 11.6 lakh passengers traveled between India and Thailand via direct flights during the April-June quarter. In a bid to attract more tourists, Thailand, which heavily relies on tourism, added India to its “visa-free” category starting November 10, 2023, initially until May 2024. This policy has now been extended to November 11, 2024. With Malaysia offering similar benefits and Indian airlines expanding routes to Central Asia, Indian travelers have plenty of options. But, ten months into the visa-free regime, how many Indians are flocking to Thailand?

For Indians, Thailand isn’t just a popular holiday spot; it’s an easy and affordable choice due to its proximity, lively nightlife, and budget-friendly options. While 2024 figures are awaited, 1.62 million Indians visited Thailand last year, still fewer than the pre-COVID peak of 1.9 million in 2019. Thailand, which previously attracted 11 million Chinese tourists annually, is now tapping into the Indian market due to China’s slower reopening post-pandemic.

In the first half of this year, 1.04 million Indian tourists visited Thailand, positioning the country to surpass 2019 figures. India is currently the fourth-largest tourism source for Thailand, following Malaysia, China, and South Korea. Although India won’t challenge the top three, the increasing number of Indian tourists reflects a boost in international travel and the success of the visa-free initiative.

How has the aviation sector adapted to this surge?
Exclusive data from aviation analytics firm Cirium, shared with HindustanTimes.com, shows that airlines have added 81 weekly flights between India and Thailand since November, when the visa-free scheme began. By November this year, there will be 355 weekly flights between the two nations, offering 64,880 seats each way.

Sixteen Indian airports and three Thai airports are connected, with Indian airlines operating 145 weekly flights and Thai airlines handling 185. Indian carriers will provide 25,694 seats weekly, while Thai carriers will offer 38,950 seats. Thai Airways leads with 80 weekly flights, followed by IndiGo (79) and Thai AirAsia (68).

Air India, which launched Phuket flights this year, aims to serve not only Indian passengers but also European tourists with a short layover in Delhi. There is ongoing speculation that more Thai destinations will soon be linked with India.

Airlines continue to expand their routes, with Nok Air launching Mumbai flights this winter. However, SpiceJet’s financial troubles have restricted its operations, despite holding rights to more flights, and Go FIRST, which ceased operations in May last year, had a significant presence in Thailand.

Emerging hubs
Air India has expanded its Thai operations, offering more connections via Delhi. Meanwhile, Thai AirAsia and Thai Airways are looking to capture Indian traffic heading to the U.S., Japan, Australia, Indonesia, and China through Bangkok’s two airports. Both Thai Airways and Air India are members of Star Alliance, further boosting connectivity.

Final Thoughts
While China has historically dominated travel in the ASEAN region, India is fast catching up. Currently, there are three times more flights between Thailand and China than between Thailand and India, but Indian travelers are making Thailand a top destination, drawn by its beaches, street food, nightlife, and ease of travel. The visa-free regime is likely to extend beyond November, bringing more benefits to airlines, though the majority of ticket sales will still come from India.

Investigation Launched Against Former Swiggy Employee Who ‘Embezzled’ ₹33 crore

0

A former junior employee at Swiggy embezzled ₹33 crore from the company, according to a report by Moneycontrol that referenced Swiggy’s 2023-24 annual report.

In response, Swiggy launched an investigation led by an external team and filed a legal complaint against the former employee responsible for the fraud.

The company’s annual report, released on September 4, stated, “The Group, during the current year, identified embezzlement of funds in one of the subsidiaries by a former junior employee amounting to ₹326.76 million over past periods.”

This development comes as Swiggy filed its draft papers on April 26 for an initial public offering (IPO), aiming to raise up to ₹3,750 crore through a fresh issue and up to ₹6,664 crore via an offer-for-sale component in its $1.25 billion IPO.

Swiggy’s Financial Performance

Swiggy’s revenue grew by 36%, reaching ₹11,247 crore, while its losses decreased by 44% to ₹2,350 crore. The improvement in profitability was attributed to its investment in Instamart.

The company’s expenses totaled ₹13,947 crore, an 8% decrease compared to the previous year, primarily due to a reduction in promotion and marketing costs, which dropped from ₹2,501 crore in the previous year to ₹1,851 crore in 2023-24.

Despite holding a 43% market share, Swiggy still trails behind its rival Zomato, which commands 57% of the market in terms of gross order value (GOV).

Australian Coach Gets Fired for ‘Go South Korea’ Cheer at Paris Olympics

0

Swimming Australia has dismissed coach Michael Palfrey following remarks he made during the Paris Olympics, where he expressed support for a South Korean swimmer over Australian athletes.

In an interview with South Korean television, Palfrey stated he hoped South Korea’s Kim Woo-min would win the men’s 400-meter freestyle in Paris, a race featuring Australians Sam Short and Elijah Winnington. “I really hope he can win, but ultimately I just hope he swims well,” Palfrey said, adding, “Go Korea.”

On Friday, Swimming Australia announced Palfrey’s termination, citing a breach of his employment agreement. The organization stated that Palfrey had “brought himself into disrepute, caused serious harm to his and Swimming Australia’s reputation, and negatively impacted Swimming Australia’s interests.”

Despite the dismissal, Palfrey will retain his coaching accreditation.

Palfrey, who previously advised Kim, was instructed alongside other Australian coaches in March to cease associations with non-Australian swimmers ahead of the Olympic Games.

Germany’s Lukas Märtens won gold in the men’s 400-meter freestyle, with Elijah Winnington taking silver and Kim Woo-min securing bronze.

Australia’s head swim coach, Rohan Taylor, condemned Palfrey’s comments as “un-Australian” and initially suggested he might be sent home, though Palfrey was ultimately allowed to stay in Paris. “Very disappointed. Extremely disappointed,” Taylor said at the time. “For a coach on our team to promote another athlete over our own is unacceptable.”

Kangana Ranaut Disappointed After Emergency Gets Postponed

0

On Friday, Kangana Ranaut announced via Twitter that her highly anticipated film Emergency, which has been surrounded by controversy, has been postponed. The film, in which Kangana plays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, was originally set to release on September 6. Sharing the news with a “heavy heart,” she expressed gratitude to her fans for their “understanding and patience.”

‘New release date to be announced soon’

Kangana took to X (formerly Twitter) to make the announcement, stating, “With a heavy heart, I announce that my directorial Emergency has been postponed. We are still waiting for certification from the censor board. A new release date will be announced soon. Thank you for your understanding and patience.” The film features Anupam Kher and the late Satish Kaushik in pivotal roles.

Reactions to Kangana’s Post

Fans were quick to respond to Kangana’s update. One user on X wrote, “No need to feel sad, Kangana Ranaut. We are with you. Whenever it releases, we’ll watch and support you no matter what!” Another added, “Don’t be discouraged, sister. Keep fighting against injustice. We’re always with you.” Some were unfazed by the delay, with one user tweeting, “Super disaster movie.”

More on the Emergency Delay

The film has faced several hurdles, including backlash from Sikh groups and a delay in receiving certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Emergency, a biographical political thriller, focuses on the life of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who declared a 21-month emergency period from 1975 to 1977.

Kangana had previously disclosed that the film is still awaiting certification from the CBFC. Contrary to earlier reports suggesting that Emergency had cleared the censor board, Kangana clarified that the certification was on hold.

Addressing the issue, she said, “There have been rumors that Emergency was certified by the Censor Board. This is not true. While the film did receive clearance from the CBFC, certification is on hold due to numerous death threats made against censor board members.”

Kangana also mentioned the pressure to remove certain scenes, including those depicting Indira Gandhi’s assassination and the Punjab riots. “I don’t know what we’re supposed to do—blackout the film during those scenes? It’s unbelievable, and I’m deeply sorry for the current state of thinking in this country,” she added.

Farooq Abdullah States Article 370 Abrogation Couldn’t Control Terrorism

0

Farooq Abdullah, president of the National Conference, responded to the Centre’s claim of normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir by stating that true peace means no armed troops patrolling the streets.

He also challenged the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA government, questioning whether they still believed Article 370 was responsible for terrorism in the region. The former chief minister emphasized that despite having control over Jammu and Kashmir for the past five years, the Centre had not successfully curbed terrorism.

“How many troops are stationed here? How heavily armed are the forces on the streets? Is that peace? Peace should exist without these troops,” Abdullah said in an interview with India Today.

As the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections draw closer, Abdullah called for the immediate restoration of statehood. Criticizing Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, he said, “I want full statehood, now. Why should we remain under the control of Delhi’s representative? He can impose decisions or make changes as he pleases.”

Abdullah made these comments when asked if an alliance with Congress would aid in restoring statehood after the elections. He clarified that the alliance was not a matter of compulsion but was essential for the development of Jammu and Kashmir and the restoration of statehood.

He also criticized the BJP-led government for reducing Jammu and Kashmir’s status, remarking, “Since India’s independence, I’ve never seen a state being downgraded to a Union Territory, except for Jammu and Kashmir.” Abdullah further accused the BJP of dividing the country along religious lines, saying, “The way they are trying to separate people based on religion is concerning.”

Farooq Abdullah also commented on Omar Abdullah’s decision to contest from two seats in the upcoming elections. He said that active participation was crucial to changing the political landscape.

Omar Abdullah’s Candidacy in Ganderbal

Omar Abdullah has filed his nomination to contest from the Ganderbal constituency in the upcoming assembly elections. At a public gathering, Omar removed his skull cap, asking for the people’s support, saying, “Today, I entrust my turban, my honor, and this cap into your hands.”

Addressing the crowd in Kashmiri, he made a heartfelt appeal, “Give me a chance. I appeal to Ganderbal with folded hands to grant me the opportunity to serve and represent you.”

Ganderbal has been a stronghold for the National Conference, with three generations of the Abdullah family winning from the constituency. NC founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah was elected in 1977, followed by his son Farooq Abdullah in 1983, 1987, and 1996. Omar Abdullah secured the seat in 2008.

Trump States He will Ask Elon to Lead ‘Government Efficiency Mission’

0

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump announced on Thursday that if he wins the November 5 election, he plans to create a government efficiency commission led by billionaire supporter Elon Musk. This came during a comprehensive speech outlining his economic vision for the country.

Speaking at the New York Economic Club, the former president also proposed cutting corporate taxes for companies manufacturing in the U.S., designating federal land as “low-tax” zones to promote home construction, and launching a sovereign wealth fund.

Trump Endorses Musk-Led Efficiency Commission

Trump had been considering the idea of an efficiency commission for weeks, according to sources close to the discussions. However, Thursday’s speech marked the first time he publicly supported the idea. It was also the first time Trump confirmed Musk’s agreement to lead the commission. While Trump did not provide specifics on how the commission would function, he mentioned it would deliver a plan to eliminate “fraud and improper payments” within six months of its formation.

“I will establish a government efficiency commission to conduct a complete financial and performance audit of the federal government,” Trump said, addressing an audience that included former Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and financiers Scott Bessent and John Paulson.

Musk, in an August 19 podcast, confirmed his discussions with Trump regarding the commission and expressed his interest in the role. On Thursday, he reiterated his willingness to participate, posting on X (formerly Twitter), “I look forward to serving America if the opportunity arises. No pay, no title, no recognition is needed.”

Musk’s Role in a Potential Trump Administration

Trump has previously expressed his desire to offer Musk a “cabinet-level” position to oversee audits of federal agencies and eliminate wasteful regulations. Musk responded enthusiastically, saying he “can’t wait” to take on the role.

Previous administrations have formed similar commissions. Notably, President Ronald Reagan established the Grace Commission during his term (1981-1989) to address government inefficiencies.

Mixed Reactions to the Proposal

The proposal has sparked some criticism. Everett Kelley, president of the American Federation of Government Employees, representing around 750,000 federal workers, accused Trump and Musk of aiming to dismantle the nonpartisan civil service and replace dismissed workers with political allies. “There’s nothing efficient about that,” Kelley told Reuters.

However, John Paulson, a financier present at the speech, supported the idea of Musk leading the commission, calling him a “terrific businessman” who could significantly improve government efficiency.

Rahul Gandhi Bashes PM Modi’s Statement over Shivaji Statue Collapse

0

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Thursday demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi issue an apology to every citizen in Maharashtra following the collapse of the statue of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Malvan, Maharashtra.

“A few days ago, the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was damaged,” Gandhi said. “After this, Narendra Modi said, ‘I apologize to Shivaji Maharaj’… But, Narendra Modi has disrespected Shivaji Maharaj. He should apologize not just to Shivaji Maharaj, but to every person in Maharashtra.”

Gandhi made this statement while addressing a gathering in Sangli, where he also unveiled a life-size statue of the late Congress leader Patangrao Kadam, who had held various ministerial positions in Maharashtra.

“…I guarantee that Kadam ji’s (Patangrao Kadam) statue will stand here for the next 50-70 years,” Gandhi said.

He also emphasized that Congress’ ideology is deeply embedded in Maharashtra’s identity, and accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of only benefiting a privileged few under its rule.

“…Congress’ ideology is in Maharashtra’s DNA. There used to be political debates, but today, we are engaged in an ideological struggle in India. We aim for social progress, while they (BJP) seek to ensure that only a select few gain all the advantages,” he added, as reported by ANI.

Shivaji’s Statue Collapse

The 35-foot statue of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Rajkot Fort collapsed on August 26 due to gusty winds, sparking a major political controversy in Maharashtra ahead of upcoming assembly elections. The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Mahayuti alliance for installing a poorly constructed statue and accused them of corruption. Modi had originally unveiled the statue on Navy Day in December 2023.

On Wednesday, the Maharashtra Police arrested 24-year-old sculptor-contractor Jaydeep Apte from Kalyan, who was wanted in connection with the collapse.

Last week, Prime Minister Modi issued an apology for the incident during an event in Palghar.

“For me and my colleagues, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is not merely a name or a king, but a revered deity. Today, I bow my head at my revered deity’s feet and apologize. I also apologize to all those who worship Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, as I understand their sentiments are deeply hurt,” he said.

India to Soon Settle on Non-Tariff Barriers on Solar Cell Imports For Boosting Local Production

0

The Indian government is expected to soon decide on imposing non-tariff barriers on solar cell imports by including them in the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM). This move could reshape the solar industry by reducing Chinese imports and encouraging domestic production.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, confirmed that the ministry is actively considering this proposal.

The ALMM is a government-approved list of solar module models and manufacturers eligible to supply to state-supported projects. In April, Mint reported that after applying the ALMM to solar modules earlier this year, the government is now contemplating similar measures for solar cells to promote Indian-made products.

When asked about extending the ALMM to solar cells, the minister said, “It is under consideration, and we will make a decision soon.”

This initiative aims to reduce India’s dependence on Chinese imports, which dominate the global solar market, while boosting the country’s domestic solar equipment manufacturing sector.

Initially introduced in 2021, the ALMM was temporarily suspended until FY24 due to concerns over low module supplies and its potential impact on solar capacity expansion. However, the list was reinstated in April, currently allowing only India-made modules, with an approved solar module capacity of around 54 GW.

In recent years, key government initiatives to promote domestic production include high import duties on solar modules and cells, the ALMM, and production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes aimed at strengthening the solar module ecosystem.

As India targets 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030—with 292 GW expected from solar power—the country will require an annual solar cell and module manufacturing capacity of 25-50 GW. Currently, India’s solar cell manufacturing capacity is just over 6 GW.

At the Bharat Electricity, PowerGen, and Indian Utility Week 2024, Joshi highlighted India’s progress in renewable energy, noting that the country’s installed renewable capacity increased from 75.52 GW in March 2014 to 203 GW today, marking a 165% growth in 10 years. He stressed that India’s achievements serve as a model for nations aiming to transition to a low-carbon economy.

The minister reiterated the government’s dedication to expanding renewable energy, improving energy efficiency, and fostering innovation in the energy sector. He also invited global investors and companies to explore opportunities in India’s renewable energy and green hydrogen sectors.

These initiatives align with India’s broader goals of reaching 500 GW of non-fossil power capacity by 2030 and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.

Nykaa Sues Ex Chief Business Officer For Alleged Misuse of Data

0

Nykaa, the fashion and beauty e-commerce platform, has filed a lawsuit against its former chief business officer, Gopal Asthana, accusing him of breaching confidentiality and misusing the company’s data, which could potentially harm the business. Asthana is now the head of Tata Cliq, Tata’s fashion e-commerce division.

According to a report by The Economic Times, Asthana allegedly approached several Nykaa employees who worked under him during his tenure, encouraging them to join Tata Cliq. Some of these employees reportedly made the switch last year.

Nykaa takes legal action in Bombay High Court

In its petition to the Bombay High Court, Nykaa stated that it had provided Asthana with substantial compensation, including long-term incentives and stock options. The company is seeking a refund of ₹19 crore in employee stock options and ₹5 crore for loss of goodwill and other damages.

The petition also requested that the court prevent Asthana from using Nykaa’s data to benefit Tata Cliq’s business. On Wednesday, the high court issued an interim order barring Asthana from recruiting Nykaa employees to Tata Cliq. However, Tata Cliq has not been made a party in the case.

Asthana, who served as Nykaa’s chief business officer for four years and was on the company’s board, allegedly had access to confidential company information due to his role. Despite having a non-compete agreement, Nykaa had made an exception allowing him to join a rival company.

Asthana denied the allegations, stating that they are “incorrect and will be clarified through arbitration.” He added, “Since the matter is sub-judice, I cannot comment further. This is between my former employer and me, and my current employer is not involved in the matter and should not be included in the discussion.”

Neither Nykaa nor Tata Cliq commented on the issue. Asthana joined Tata Cliq in 2023. Key competitors in the fashion e-commerce space include Nykaa, Tata Cliq, Amazon Fashion, Ajio, Reliance’s Tira, and Flipkart’s Myntra.

Tulsi Gabbard States Biden Placed her on ‘Secret terror watchlist’

0

Tulsi Gabbard revealed on Wednesday that she has been placed on a “secret terror watchlist” by the U.S. government. In a video shared on her official X account, formerly known as Twitter, the former congresswoman claimed that the Biden administration had labeled her a “potential domestic terror threat” as an act of “political retaliation.” Gabbard, 43, an outspoken critic of Kamala Harris’ policies, is currently working with Donald Trump’s campaign.

Gabbard accuses Democrats of targeting her for opposing Harris’ policies

In the nearly 15-minute video, Gabbard explained that she had warned the public about the dangers of electing Kamala Harris as president and urged Americans to be concerned. She also shared that both she and her husband, Abraham Williams, have faced “extra TSA screening” multiple times before boarding flights.

“Each time, we were told by the TSA agents that it was ‘random selection,’” Gabbard said. “That could have been believable if it had happened once or twice. But five, six, seven, eight times in a row? No way,” she continued, adding that “on August 4, Federal Air Marshal whistleblowers came forward with disturbing information.” Gabbard revealed that the whistleblowers informed her she had been added to a secret TSA watchlist known as ‘Quiet Skies.’”

According to Gabbard, she was placed on the list on July 23, which coincided with the start of the additional TSA screenings. Her video also featured images of “TSA targeting packets” that air marshals reportedly received as part of their mission.

“I later discovered that at least three air marshals were assigned to monitor me during every flight and at the airport,” Gabbard said, criticizing the Biden administration’s actions as “extreme by any measure.” She questioned, “What kind of threat did they think I posed?” Gabbard concluded by warning that “everyday Americans are being watched and spied on by our own government. Why? Because those in power see us as a threat.”
