Missile Fired By Yemen Rebels Lands in Israel: Tensions Rise

0

Early Sunday, a missile fired by Yemen’s Iran-backed rebels landed in an open area in central Israel, setting off air raid sirens at Ben Gurion International Airport. This incident is the latest development in the ongoing conflict that has persisted for nearly a year. Although there were no casualties or significant damage reported, Israeli media showed footage of people rushing to shelters at the airport, which resumed normal operations shortly afterward.

A fire was visible in a rural area of central Israel, and images surfaced of what seemed to be a missile fragment that landed on an escalator at a train station in Modiin. The Israeli military reported that the surface-to-surface missile was intercepted by their defense system, which hit and fragmented the missile but did not destroy it. The explosions heard were from interceptors engaging the missile.

The Houthis, the Yemeni rebels, have previously launched drones and missiles at Israel since the onset of the Gaza conflict between Israel and Hamas, with most being intercepted over the Red Sea. In July, an Iranian-made drone from the Houthis hit Tel Aviv, resulting in one death and ten injuries. Israel responded with airstrikes on Houthi positions in Yemen, including the port city of Hodeidah. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suggested a similar response might follow the latest attack, warning that the Houthis should expect a heavy price for targeting Israel.

Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree claimed that the missile targeted a “military objective” near Tel Aviv. The Houthis have also targeted commercial shipping in the Red Sea, which they portray as a blockade on Israel in support of Palestinians. Most of these ships are not linked to Israel.

The ongoing Gaza conflict, which began with Hamas’s attack on October 7, has had regional repercussions, including attacks on Israeli and U.S. targets by Iran and its allies. These retaliatory strikes have raised concerns about a broader conflict.

On Sunday, the Israeli military reported a “high probability” that three hostages found dead months ago were killed in an Israeli airstrike. The victims—Cpl. Nik Beizer, Sgt. Ron Sherman, and Elia Toledano—were abducted during Hamas’s attack and were believed to have been killed in a November strike targeting a senior Hamas militant. This announcement may intensify pressure on the Israeli government to negotiate for the remaining hostages, though critics argue that rescuing them is too perilous.

Additionally, an Israeli border police officer was stabbed near Jerusalem’s Damascus Gate; the attacker was shot and killed. The officer was not seriously injured.

Early Sunday, around 40 projectiles were fired from Lebanon, with most being intercepted or falling in open areas. Israeli forces also dropped leaflets over the Lebanese town of al-Wazzani, calling for evacuation, but this was later clarified as an unauthorized action by a local commander.

The Israel-Lebanon border tensions have displaced many people on both sides. Netanyahu emphasized the need to restore safety and order in the region. Hezbollah has stated it would cease attacks if a Gaza cease-fire is achieved, but recent negotiations for a truce and the release of hostages have stalled. Netanyahu has insisted on maintaining control over the Gaza-Egypt border to prevent arms smuggling, though recent discoveries of sealed tunnels might undermine this position.

The Israeli military announced that of the many tunnels discovered, only nine entered Egypt, and all have been sealed. This contradicts Netanyahu’s argument for continued control over the corridor. Egypt has previously sealed tunnels on its side, creating its own buffer zone along the border.

Donald Trump ‘Safe’ After Assassination Attempt in Florida’s Golf Club

On Sunday, a man armed with an AK-style rifle aimed his weapon at Donald Trump’s golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, while the former president was on the course. The U.S. Secret Service responded by opening fire. Fortunately, Trump was unharmed, and the FBI is investigating the incident as an attempted assassination of the Republican presidential candidate.

The suspect, who abandoned his weapon and fled in an SUV, was apprehended in a neighboring county. An AK-style firearm was found at the scene near Trump International Golf Club West Palm Beach, but no injuries were reported.

This incident adds to a tumultuous campaign year. It comes roughly two months after Trump survived an assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally, where he was grazed by a bullet. Shortly after, President Joe Biden withdrew from the race.

During Trump’s round of golf, the course was partially closed off for his safety. Secret Service agents, who secure the area ahead and behind him, noticed the armed individual a few holes ahead. An armored vehicle is typically on-site to provide immediate protection if needed.

Trump had returned to Florida from a West Coast tour that included a Las Vegas rally and a fundraiser in Utah. His Sunday plans were not publicly disclosed by his campaign. Trump usually spends his mornings golfing and then having lunch at one of his three Florida clubs.

Following the July assassination attempt, Trump’s security measures have been heightened, including the use of dump trucks to block Trump Tower’s entrance and bulletproof glass at outdoor rallies. After the incident, Trump was safely returned to his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach.

The White House stated that both President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed and relieved that Trump was safe. Harris condemned the violence, emphasizing that it has no place in America.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, a prominent Trump ally, reported that Trump was in “good spirits” after the incident. Martin County Sheriff William D. Snyder detailed how the suspect was quickly apprehended following a “very urgent BOLO” (be on the lookout) alert. Deputies intercepted the suspect’s vehicle on I-95, and he was taken into custody without further incident.

Attorney General Merrick Garland is receiving regular updates on the situation. The suspect was apprehended near Palm City, Florida, about 45 miles north of the golf course, leading to a temporary closure of northbound lanes on I-95.

Eyewitness Max Egusquiza described the emergency response, noting a significant police presence. Trump is scheduled to speak about cryptocurrency on social media Monday night and will resume his campaign activities on Tuesday in Flint, Michigan, followed by a rally in Long Island, New York, on Wednesday. Later in the week, he will attend the Israeli-American Council National Summit in Washington, D.C., and hold a rally in Wilmington, North Carolina.

VP Dhankhar Slams Rahul Gandhi and Congress PMs over Constitution

0

On Sunday, during his visit to Mumbai, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar made indirect critiques of Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and former Congress Prime Ministers Indira and Rajiv Gandhi, accusing them of being “anti-reservation.” Dhankhar was at the Elphinstone Technical High School and Junior College to inaugurate one of the ‘Constitution temples’ set up in 434 industrial training institutes across the state.

In his address at the inauguration of the Samvidhan Mandir, Dhankhar highlighted what he described as a prejudice that led to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar not receiving the Bharat Ratna and the delay in implementing the Mandal Commission recommendations for nearly a decade. He criticized a current constitutional officeholder for allegedly making anti-India remarks abroad and calling for an end to reservations.

Dhankhar’s remarks were in response to Rahul Gandhi’s recent comments during his visit to the US, where he suggested that the Congress party would consider scrapping reservations only when India becomes a fair place. Gandhi later clarified that he had been misquoted and reiterated his support for increasing reservations beyond 50 percent.

Dhankhar also took issue with Rahul Gandhi’s use of the Constitution as a campaign prop, arguing that some political leaders are merely showcasing it without genuinely respecting or understanding its essence. He emphasized that the Constitution should be respected and not used as a mere symbol.

Furthermore, Dhankhar questioned why the Bharat Ratna was not awarded to B.R. Ambedkar earlier and criticized the lack of action on the Mandal Commission report during the tenures of Indira and Rajiv Gandhi. He also condemned the 1975 Emergency, alleging that Indira Gandhi undermined Dr. Ambedkar’s vision by subverting the Constitution. In response, the current government has designated June 25 as Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas (Constitution Murder Day) to commemorate the impact of that period on constitutional processes.

Dhankhar urged the youth to resist attacks on democratic and constitutional values, quoting B.R. Ambedkar on the importance of placing the country above individual or party interests to safeguard independence.

The event, attended by Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale, and Skill Development Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha, faced logistical issues due to leaks and rainwater inside the venue, causing inconvenience to attendees.

Randeep Hooda States Boycott Culture is a Social Media Hoax

0

Randeep Hooda recently addressed the issue of social media negativity and ‘cancel culture,’ stating that it doesn’t affect him. During the India Today Mind Rocks 2024 Youth Summit, the actor was asked about the impact of the ‘boycott culture’ on film releases, to which he referred to it as a “social media hoax.”

Randeep Hooda on the Boycott Trend
Reflecting on the social media boycott phenomenon, Randeep expressed that any form of attention is beneficial for actors, though he warned against the pursuit of mere “sensationalism.”

“I believe that any popularity is good popularity. The real issue is when no one talks about you. But it shouldn’t just be about creating sensational headlines. Boycott culture is a social media hoax. Just because a film is called for boycott online, doesn’t mean people won’t go watch it. If audiences aren’t watching, it’s because they didn’t like the trailer. People watch movies if they connect with the trailer or the actors. It has nothing to do with this so-called boycott culture. It doesn’t bother me at all. I’ve been canceled many times and I’m still here,” he said.

Randeep Hooda’s Acting Career
Randeep made his debut in Mira Nair’s English-language film Monsoon Wedding and followed it with his first Hindi film D. He has since starred in Bollywood movies such as Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster, Jannat 2, Cocktail, Jism 2, Heroine, Murder 3, Highway, and Kick. His notable performances also include films like Sultan, Baaghi 2, Love Aaj Kal, and the Hollywood action-thriller Extraction. He’s portrayed real-life characters in biopics like Rang Rasiya, Main Aur Charles, Sarbjit, and Swatantrya Veer Savarkar.

In his most recent role, Randeep both directed and co-produced the epic drama where he played the Indian political activist Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. The film featured Ankita Lokhande, Amit Sial, Mrinal Dutt, Rajesh Kera, and Lokesh Mittal in key roles.

Avinash Sable Gets Ninth in his Maiden Diamond League Final

0

National record holder in the 3000m steeplechase, Avinash Sable, finished ninth in the season-ending Diamond League final on Friday with a time below his usual standards.

Sable, who celebrated his 30th birthday on the same day, clocked 8 minutes and 17.09 seconds in the 10-man race, marking his debut in the Diamond League final.

Kenya’s Amos Serem claimed the Diamond League title with a time of 8:06.90, while Morocco’s reigning Olympic and world champion Soufiane El Bakkali finished second with 8:08.60. Mohamed Amin Jhinaoui of Tunisia took third place, clocking 8:09.68.

Meanwhile, world champion and Paris Olympics silver medallist javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra is set to compete on Saturday.

Sable had earlier finished 11th at the Paris Olympics with a time of 8:14.18.

Ranked 14th in the overall Diamond League standings with three points from two meets, Sable managed to qualify for the top 10 final after higher-ranked athletes, including Ethiopia’s Lamecha Girma (injured), New Zealand’s Geordie Beamish, Japan’s Ryuji Mura, and the USA’s Hillary Bor, withdrew.

Five out of the 14 Diamond League meets this season featured the men’s 3000m steeplechase event. Sable, the reigning Asian Games champion, had set a national record of 8:09.91 while finishing sixth in the Paris leg on July 7, improving his own previous best. He later placed 14th in the Silesia leg with a time of 8:29.96 on August 25.

Each Diamond League season finale winner receives a ‘Diamond Trophy,’ a cash prize of USD 30,000, and a wild card entry to the World Athletics Championships.

BTS’ Jungkook Reveals his Support for NewJeans

0

In a surprising turn of events amid the ongoing HYBE vs. Min Hee Jin controversy, BTS’ Jungkook left the K-pop fandom buzzing after offering apparent support to the members of NewJeans.

On September 14, the youngest BTS member subtly expressed solidarity with the girl group through an Instagram post on his dog Bam’s account. He captioned the post, “Artists are not guilty,” accompanied by a new photo of Bam. This simple message caused a stir online, with fans noticing additional symbolic details in the post. Along with the caption, Jungkook used five heart emojis and a flexed bicep emoji.

The colored heart emojis seemed to correspond to the members of NewJeans, who often use similar emojis to represent themselves. Fans quickly interpreted the post as a sign that the ‘Golden’ singer was standing by the young artists, who are also under the ADOR label, a subsidiary of HYBE (formerly BIGHIT Entertainment), home to BTS.

Jungkook’s post sparked widespread debate, with some applauding his gesture, while others speculated that his Instagram account had been hacked by NewJeans’ fans, known as Bunnies.

One fan commented, “Jungkook has been in the industry since he was 13. If anyone’s going to support young artists, it’s him.” Others were skeptical, noting that Jungkook rarely uses English captions in his posts. “This could’ve been hacked by Bunnies. The number of emojis and the English caption feel off,” another fan speculated.

Hours later, a second post featuring Bam appeared on the same account with the caption, “Don’t use them,” which many took as another reference to NewJeans being caught in the middle of the ongoing legal conflict between HYBE and former ADOR CEO Min Hee Jin.

Despite some fans insisting that Jungkook’s account was compromised, others countered by pointing out that he may have chosen to post his support on Bam’s Instagram to avoid potential censorship on Weverse, a fan platform monitored by HYBE staff. “If he was hacked, he would’ve cleared it up by now—it’s been five hours. Respect Jungkook, he’s allowed to have his own opinion!” one netizen argued.

In response to the growing discussion, BigHit Music, Jungkook’s agency, issued an official statement addressing the situation. According to South Korean media, the company confirmed that Jungkook’s posts were intentional and stated, “We confirmed (with Jungkook) that the post was made out of concern that young artists should not be drawn into disputes or used as shields in any situation.”

Donald Trump Pushes for Mass Deportation of Haitians if Elected

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump vowed on Friday to carry out mass deportations of Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, despite the fact that most of them are legally residing in the U.S.

The city has recently been at the center of a social media storm, fueled by false claims from right-wing agitators that Haitian newcomers were eating household pets.

“We will conduct large-scale deportations in Springfield, Ohio,” Trump stated during a press conference at his golf resort near Los Angeles.

Of the 15,000 Haitians living in Springfield, the majority are there legally. Trump’s usual focus on mass deportations primarily targets undocumented immigrants.

During the press conference, Trump did not repeat his controversial claim from Tuesday’s presidential debate with Democrat Kamala Harris that immigrants were eating dogs and cats, a remark that has since been widely ridiculed.

In response to the escalating situation, two elementary schools were evacuated, and a middle school in Springfield was closed on Friday following anonymous bomb threats, marking the second day of such threats, according to ABC News.

At the White House, President Joe Biden called for an end to the hostility against the Haitian community.

“This is wrong. It has no place in America. What Trump is doing must stop,” Biden urged.

The Biden administration in June extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to hundreds of thousands of Haitians in the U.S., a long-standing program that shields legal immigrants from deportation and grants work permits. Haiti’s ongoing gang violence has displaced over half a million people, with nearly five million facing extreme food insecurity.

Trump has cited the unrest in Springfield as evidence for tougher immigration policies. While the arrival of Haitians has benefited the local economy, it has also strained social services.

“I’m furious about illegal Haitian migrants overrunning Springfield, Ohio. You’ve seen the chaos, haven’t you?” Trump said later that day at a rally in Las Vegas.

He went on to add, “I’m outraged by young American girls being raped and murdered by savage criminal aliens who enter our country illegally.”

Haitian community leaders across the country expressed concern that Trump’s rhetoric could incite violence and worsen tensions in Springfield.

“We need help, not hate,” Springfield Mayor Rob Rue told ABC News.

City officials have reported no credible evidence of pets being consumed, and Karen Graves, a city spokesperson, confirmed that while there have been no recent hate crimes targeting Haitians, some residents have fallen victim to “crimes of opportunity,” such as theft.

India sends Delegation to Canada After a Year

0

Toronto: An official Indian delegation attended the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), marking the first such visit to Canada in nearly a year.

Led by a Joint Secretary from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the delegation represented India at the festival, with an official Bharat Pavilion set up at TIFF’s Industry Centre.

During the visit, the delegation held bilateral meetings with Telefilm Canada, a government agency responsible for promoting, financing, and developing the country’s screen-based industries. They also met with representatives from Ontario Creates, the provincial agency focused on fostering economic development and collaboration within Ontario’s creative industries, including film, music, television, and digital media. Additional meetings were held with Australian officials at the festival.

This was the first formal visit by an Indian delegation since Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s statement in the House of Commons on September 18 last year, where he alleged a potential connection between Indian agents and the killing of pro-Khalistan figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia. The allegation led to a strain in diplomatic relations, halting public bilateral engagements, with India dismissing Trudeau’s claim as “absurd” and “motivated.”

However, the Indian presence at TIFF faced challenges, as six officials from the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) were unable to attend due to either visa denials or delayed processing of travel documents.

Despite these setbacks, TIFF partnered with NFDC to premiere a high-quality digital restoration of Raj Kapoor’s classic film Awara, which was screened on Friday. The film was presented by acclaimed director Shekhar Kapur, who also serves as the director of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI).

Stone Pelting at Durg-Vizag Vande Bharat

In another incident involving a Vande Bharat Express, stones were thrown at the train during its trial run, leading to the arrest of five individuals in Mahasamund, Chhattisgarh, officials said on Saturday.

One of the accused has a relative who is a member of a political party, according to reports.

The incident occurred just days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to flag off the newest Vande Bharat train on Monday, the day before his 74th birthday. This train will connect Durg in Chhattisgarh with Visakhapatnam (Vizag) in Andhra Pradesh.

“The train was passing through Bagbahra railway station on its way back from Visakhapatnam to Durg during its trial run around 9 p.m. on Friday,” said Praveen Singh Dhakad of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), as reported by PTI. “Some anti-social elements threw stones, damaging the window panes of coaches C2, C4, and C9. Fortunately, no one was injured,” he added.

An RPF escort team, led by an assistant sub-inspector, immediately alerted authorities, prompting security personnel to be dispatched to the scene.

The five arrested individuals, identified as Shiv Kumar Baghel, Devendra Chandrakar, Jitu Tandi, Lekhraj Sonwani, and Arjun Yadav, are all residents of Bagbahra. According to officials, Baghel’s sister-in-law is a corporator from the opposition Congress party in Chhattisgarh.

The group has been charged under Section 153 of the Railways Act, 1989, which carries a penalty of up to five years in prison for endangering the safety of a person on a railway through intentional acts or negligence.

Lady Gaga Slams Her College Group That Stated She’d Never be Famous

0

Lady Gaga has amassed an impressive collection of awards, including an Academy Award, two Golden Globes, 13 Grammys, 10 Billboard Music Awards, and 18 MTV Video Music Awards. But did you know that during her time at New York University, some of her classmates formed a group predicting she’d never be famous?

Lady Gaga responds to college group
On Friday, Lady Gaga reacted to a TikTok that compared her achievements to a Facebook group called “Stefani Germanotta, you will never be famous,” using her real name. Gaga commented, “Some people I went to college with made this way back when. This is why you can’t give up when people doubt you or put you down — gotta keep going.”

Before her rise to fame, Lady Gaga attended NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts but dropped out in 2005 to pursue a music career. She began performing in New York clubs before releasing her debut album The Fame in 2008, followed by hits like Born This Way (2011) and Chromatica (2020). In 2013, she transitioned into acting, starring in the Oscar-nominated film A Star Is Born (2018) alongside Bradley Cooper.

Lady Gaga’s upcoming project
Next, Lady Gaga is set to portray Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to the 2019 blockbuster Joker. The film, scheduled for release on October 2, continues the success of the original, which earned 11 Oscar nominations, including Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and Best Original Score. In the sequel, Phoenix reprises his role as Joker, with a supporting cast that includes Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, Harry Lawtey, and Zazie Beetz, who returns as Sophie from the first film. Unlike its predecessor, the sequel is rumored to be a musical, expanding on Phoenix’s dancing scenes. Joker: Folie à Deux recently premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where Lady Gaga made a stylish appearance.
