According to a police official cited by PTI, the three alleged assailants learned firearm handling through YouTube tutorials while staying in Mumbai’s Kurla area.

Two of the accused, Gurmail Singh and Dharmaraj Kashyap, have been arrested, while Shivkumar Gautam remains at large. A fourth suspect, Harish Kumar Balakram Nisad, was apprehended in Uttar Pradesh and transferred to Mumbai.

The official stated, “The accused spent nearly four weeks watching these videos and learnt how to load and unload a weapon.” Lacking an open space for practice, they resorted to “dry practice” – shooting without bullets – in their rented accommodation.

Who was the key shooter of Baba Siddique’s Murder?

Interrogations revealed that Gautam, still a fugitive, was designated as the “main shooter” due to his prior experience with firearms from celebratory firings in his native Bahraich. He allegedly trained Singh and Kashyap in weapon handling.

To evade surveillance, the suspects communicated via social media apps like Instagram and Snapchat. Shubham Lonkar, a member of Lawrence Bishnoi’s gang who claimed responsibility for the murder on Facebook, reportedly instructed the accused to use these platforms. The official noted, “Snapchat has a feature which automatically deletes most messages after they are viewed or expire.”

The ceremony took place at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar, where Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha administered the oath of office.

Jammu and Kashmir gets new CM as Omar Abdullah

Abdullah’s appointment represents a significant milestone as he becomes the first Chief Minister to take office since the abrogation of Article 370 and the conversion of Jammu and Kashmir into a Union Territory in 2019.

This marks Abdullah’s second term as Chief Minister, serving from 2009 to 2014 when Jammu and Kashmir was still a state under a National Conference-Congress alliance.

The new government formation follows the September-October Assembly elections, where the National Conference-Congress alliance secured a majority, winning 48 out of 90 seats. The National Conference emerged as the single largest party with 42 seats, while the Congress won six.

New Cabinet Ministers of Jammu and Kashmir

Surinder Singh Choudhary, a National Conference MLA who defeated J&K BJP chief Ravinder Raina in Nowshera, was appointed Deputy Chief Minister, ensuring representation from the Jammu division in the new administration.

Four other MLAs were also sworn in: Satish Sharma (Independent), Sakina Itoo, Javid Dar, and Javid Rana (all from the National Conference).

Is Congress joining the cabinet?

Notably, the Congress has opted out of joining the Cabinet for now. Jammu and Kashmir Congress chief Tariq Hameed Karra explained the party’s stance, stating, “The Congress is not joining the ministry in Jammu and Kashmir government at the moment. The Congress has strongly demanded from the Centre to restore Statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. Besides, the Prime Minister has, time and again, promised the same in public meetings.”

Karra added, “But, statehood has not been restored to Jammu and Kashmir. We are unhappy and therefore, we are not joining the ministry at the moment. The Congress shall continue to fight for the restoration of statehood.”

No turmoil between Omar Abdullah and Congress!

Despite this decision, Omar Abdullah dismissed rumours of a rift between the National Conference and Congress. He clarified that not all nine Cabinet vacancies would be filled immediately, saying, “I will not be filling all nine vacancies in the council of ministers. Some vacancies will be kept open as we are in talks with Congress.”

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by several opposition leaders, including Congress figures Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav. Before the ceremony, Abdullah paid respects at the mausoleum of his grandfather and National Conference founder, Sheikh Abdullah.

The 23-year-old scrap dealer from Pune is accused of being involved in the conspiracy, providing financial and logistical support to the shooters.

Balakram joins three previously arrested individuals: Gurmail Baljit Singh (23) from Haryana, Dharmaraj Kashyap (19) from Uttar Pradesh – both alleged shooters – and Pravin Lonkar, a Pune-based co-conspirator.

The police also detained Anurag Kashyap, brother of Dharmaraj Kashyap, and are searching for a seventh suspect believed to be the crucial link between the Lawrence Bishnoi gang and the shooters.

Investigators revealed that Balakram’s scrap shop was used by Dharmaraj Kashyap and Shivprasad Gautam. He allegedly provided money to the suspects, arranged a rented home in Mumbai’s Kurla, supplied a bike, and purchased new mobile phones for the shooters days before the crime.

Two pistols – one Glock and one country-made – have been recovered from the arrested accused. Three suspects remain at large: Shubham Lonkar, Shiv Kumar Gautam, and Mohammad Zeeshan Akhtar.

The incident occurred on October 12, when Baba Siddique, a prominent NCP leader, was ambushed and shot outside his son Zeeshan Siddique’s office in Mumbai’s Bandra. He was rushed to Lilavati Hospital but was declared dead upon arrival. Siddique was laid to rest the following day with state honours, attended by numerous political leaders and supporters amid tight security.

As the investigation continues, the Mumbai Police are focused on apprehending the remaining suspects and unravelling the full extent of the conspiracy behind this high-profile murder that has shocked Maharashtra’s political landscape.
