AAP States BJP’s Parvesh Verma Sent ₹1,100 cash to Voters

0

Delhi Chief Minister Atishi on Wednesday alleged that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Parvesh Verma was distributing cash to women in Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor Arvind Kejriwal’s New Delhi constituency.

At a press conference, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi alleged that BJP leader Parvesh Verma distributed ₹1,100 to women from slum clusters at his Windsor Place residence and recorded their voter ID details.

“BJP is distributing money after verifying voter cards in the New Delhi assembly constituency, where Arvind Kejriwal contests elections. Today, Parvesh Verma was caught red-handed handing out money at his official MP residence. Women from various slums in the New Delhi constituency were called there and given ₹1,100 in envelopes,” ANI quoted Atishi as saying.

Earlier, Arvind Kejriwal claimed that women in his constituency were being paid ₹1,100 to buy votes.

“During my visits to several areas in my New Delhi Vidhan Sabha constituency today, people told me that votes are being openly purchased for ₹1,100 each. However, they assured me they will accept the money but won’t vote for them,” Kejriwal posted on X.1

“According to sources, the BJP plans to announce Parvesh Verma as its chief ministerial candidate. Do the people of Delhi want someone like him as their CM?” the former Delhi Chief Minister alleged.

Parvesh Verma Responds to Allegations

Denying the AAP’s accusations, Parvesh Verma explained that the money distribution was part of a campaign by ‘Rashtriya Swabhiman,’ an NGO established by his late father and former Delhi Chief Minister, Sahib Singh Verma.

“I am addressing the hardships faced by women that Arvind Kejriwal failed to notice over the past 11 years. They were struggling, so I decided to provide them ₹1,100 per month. At least I am not distributing liquor like Arvind Kejriwal. I am proud to be helping people,” PTI quoted the former West Delhi MP as saying.

Verma stated that Rashtriya Swabhiman has a history of assisting communities, having redeveloped two villages in Gujarat affected by an earthquake and four villages in Odisha devastated by a cyclone.

The election for the 70-member Delhi Assembly is scheduled for February next year.

Bumrah, who secured nine wickets for 94 runs in the match, added 14 points to his tally, bringing his total to 904 rating points. This milestone equals the rating achieved by Ravichandran Ashwin in December 2016 after the fourth Test against England in Mumbai.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj has climbed to 24th place, and Travis Head has entered the top 100 bowlers.

On the batting front, Head’s impressive innings of 152 in the first innings has propelled him past India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal to fourth place in the rankings, led by Joe Root. Steve Smith re-entered the top 10 with a score of 101, and Alex Carey advanced 11 places to 29th after contributing 70 and 20* in his innings. India’s KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja also progressed to 40th and 42nd positions, respectively.

Russian Cargo Ships Sinks Due to Engine Explosion; Two Crew Members Missing

A Russian cargo ship, Ursa Major, sank in the Mediterranean Sea overnight following a massive explosion in its engine room, Reuters reported, citing the Russian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday.

The ministry confirmed that 14 of the 16 crew members were safely rescued and brought to the Spanish port of Cartagena, while two remained missing.

The cause of the explosion has not been disclosed and is under investigation. Russia’s embassy in Spain informed state news agency RIA Novosti that it is working with local authorities to examine the incident.

Spain’s maritime rescue service responded to a distress signal from the Ursa Major on Monday. A nearby vessel reported rough weather conditions, a lifeboat in the water, and that the ship was listing to starboard.

Two rescue vessels and a helicopter were deployed to the site. The crew indicated that the ship was transporting empty containers and two port cranes on its deck.

Later, a Russian warship arrived to oversee the rescue efforts.

The Ursa Major, capable of carrying 1,200 tons or up to 120 vehicles on deck, was the largest cargo ship operated by Oboronlogistika, a company affiliated with the Russian defense ministry. The company manages the transport of both military and civilian goods, according to Bloomberg.

The vessel had recently undergone repairs in November in preparation for a planned voyage to Vladivostok with heavy cargo, as noted in a December 3 statement on Oboronlogistika’s website, referenced by Bloomberg.

France’s Political Turmoil; Fourth Government in a Year Amid Tussle Over Budget Issues

0

French President Emmanuel Macron unveiled a new government under François Bayrou, marking his fourth prime ministerial appointment this year, on Monday evening. The reshuffled cabinet has been tasked with steering the EU’s second-largest economy out of a political crisis sparked by budget disputes.

Eric Lombard, a seasoned finance professional, was named finance minister and is charged with drafting the country’s next budget. This comes after the previous government collapsed over a contentious proposal involving €60 billion ($62.9 billion) in tax hikes and spending cuts, leaving France without a formal budget.

Lombard’s immediate challenge will be to push through the 2025 budget and withstand a potential no-confidence vote from the opposition. Securing support in the National Assembly will be a formidable task, as Macron’s party holds a minority position.

Elisabeth Borne, 63, a former prime minister, was appointed as education minister, while Manuel Valls, 62, another former prime minister, returned as overseas territories minister. Gerald Darmanin, previously interior minister, was named justice minister.

Macron retained Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu and Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot in their roles. Bruno Retailleau, a conservative interior minister with a firm stance on illegal immigration, and Culture Minister Rachida Dati, known for her right-wing views, also retained their posts.

Prime Minister Bayrou expressed optimism about passing the budget by mid-February after consulting stakeholders. The cabinet’s first meeting is scheduled for January 3, and Bayrou will present a policy agenda to the National Assembly on January 14.

“I believe there’s a way forward — perhaps it’s sheer optimism — but I can assure you that if we fail this time, it’s the final stop before the cliff edge,” Bayrou stated in an interview with France 2 television on Thursday.

Donald Trump Threatens Panama Canals For ‘ridiculous fees’

0

US President-elect Donald Trump hinted on Sunday that his administration might seek to regain control of the Panama Canal, which he claimed the United States “foolishly” handed over to its Central American ally.

Trump criticized the fees imposed on ships using the critical waterway, calling them “ridiculous.” Speaking at a rally in Arizona, he lamented, “We’re being ripped off at the Panama Canal” and expressed regret that the canal was “foolishly given away.”

He further declared that if the principles of this “magnanimous gesture of giving” were not upheld, his administration would demand the canal’s return to the United States “in full, quickly, and without question.” Addressing Panama directly, he warned, “I’m not going to stand for it. So to the officials of Panama, please be guided accordingly.”

The canal, built by the United States in the early 1900s to facilitate the transit of commercial and military vessels, was relinquished to Panama on December 31, 1999, under a 1977 treaty signed by President Jimmy Carter.

In 2023, droughts in Central America significantly impacted the canal’s operations, forcing reductions in daily ship crossings and an increase in reservation fees. While conditions normalized later in the year, administrators have indicated that further fee hikes are likely in the coming year.

Panama’s Response

Shortly after Trump’s remarks at the AmericaFest in Arizona, Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino responded with a video statement asserting that “every square meter of the canal belongs to Panama and will continue to belong” to the country.

Without naming Trump, Mulino defended the rising fees, explaining that they are determined by experts based on operational costs and market dynamics, not arbitrarily. He highlighted Panama’s independent efforts to expand the canal and emphasized that increased shipping fees help finance these improvements.

“Panamanians may have different views on many issues. But when it comes to our canal and our sovereignty, we will all unite under our Panamanian flag,” Mulino said.

Though Mulino, a conservative populist, shares ideological similarities with Trump, he underscored Panama’s strong stance on maintaining sovereignty over the canal. The waterway, which generates about one-fifth of Panama’s annual revenue, remains a cornerstone of the nation’s economy and its strategic alliance with the United States.

Allu Arjun’s Home Gets Vandalized For Pushpa 2 Stampede

0

Tensions escalated on Sunday evening as protesters vandalized actor Allu Arjun’s property in Hyderabad. Visuals shared by Big TV show the group, allegedly members of the OU JAC (Osmania University Joint Action Committee), holding placards and hurling stones and tomatoes at the actor’s Jubilee Hills home. They also damaged flower pots and demanded that Allu Arjun provide financial support to the family of the victim from the Pushpa 2 stampede incident.

Protesters Demand Compensation

According to Big TV, the protesters insisted that Allu Arjun pay ₹1 crore to the victim’s family, citing the commercial success of Pushpa 2: The Rule.

One protester said, “We demand that Allu Arjun support the late Revathi’s family. Why did so many film personalities visit him after he came out of jail, but no one cared when a woman lost her life? This is the time for them to stand by Revathi’s family and support Sri Teja. We won’t allow him to go anywhere until these demands are met.”

It remains unclear whether the actor was at home during the attack. However, his staff reportedly moved his children, Arha and Ayaan, to their maternal uncle’s residence for safety.

The Pushpa 2 Stampede Incident

The controversy stems from a stampede-like situation that occurred on December 4 during Allu Arjun’s visit to Sandhya Theatre in Hyderabad with his family and co-star Rashmika Mandanna. The chaos led to the death of a woman named Revathi and left her young son critically injured.

The actor was arrested in connection with the incident on December 13 and granted interim bail by the High Court on December 14.

Following his release, numerous film personalities, including Vijay Deverakonda, Venkatesh, Rana Daggubati, and Naga Chaitanya, visited Allu Arjun, sparking criticism for the lack of attention to the victim’s family.

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has alleged that Allu Arjun was informed about the woman’s death while he was still at the theatre. The Telangana police have corroborated this claim. However, the actor maintains that he learned about the incident only the following day.

Google Announces Layoffs; Reports Suggest 10% Managerial Roles Cut

0

Google continues its push for greater efficiency with another round of job cuts. CEO Sundar Pichai disclosed during a recent all-hands meeting that the company has eliminated 10% of its managerial roles, including directors and VPs. This workforce reduction aligns with Google’s efforts to sharpen its focus amid intensifying AI competition from rivals like OpenAI, which challenges its search dominance.

Google Trims Management Ranks

The tech giant has been systematically streamlining its operations over the past two years. In the latest round of layoffs, conducted on Wednesday, numerous managers and VPs were let go. While some employees were reassigned to individual contributor roles, others saw their positions eliminated altogether.

This restructuring initiative dates back to 2022 when Pichai announced plans to enhance efficiency by 20%. The process has already led to significant layoffs, including last year’s dismissal of over 12,000 employees.

Reassessing ‘Googleyness’

During the meeting, Pichai also addressed the evolving concept of “Googleyness.” Previously a broad term describing traits suitable for the company, it had become ambiguous over time. Pichai clarified its meaning, emphasizing core values like mission-driven work, innovation, and teamwork. He urged employees to prioritize the company’s mission, focus on creating helpful products, embrace bold risks, and maintain a collaborative, resourceful approach.

Industry-Wide Restructuring

Google’s recent organizational overhaul mirrors a broader trend in the tech sector, where companies are adapting to the fast-paced AI revolution. Similar efforts can be seen at Amazon, which has also reduced middle management layers to empower individual contributors and improve efficiency.

Starbucks Won’t Leave India; Tata Consumer Denies Reports

0

Tata Consumer Products has dismissed claims that Starbucks might exit India due to mounting losses and high operational costs, labeling the reports as “baseless” in letters to three major Indian stock exchanges.

The Report in Question

On December 19, a Rajasthan-based media outlet, The Philox, published an article titled, “Starbucks to Exit India Due to High Costs, Bad Taste, and Mounting Losses.” The report suggested that the American coffee giant might cease operations in India, citing price-sensitive Indian consumers opting for cheaper local alternatives.

Starbucks entered India in 2012 through a joint venture with Tata Consumer Products. Notably, The Philox report neither quoted Tata officials nor provided an official statement, while claiming Starbucks beverages are perceived as “overpriced and shallow” in the Indian market.

The report also pointed out that despite ambitious plans, Starbucks has struggled to generate significant profits in India. It coincided with Starbucks India’s announcement of delays in opening new stores.

According to Tata Consumer Products Limited’s (TCPL) annual report released in May, the joint venture, Tata Starbucks Private Limited, recorded a loss of ₹81 crore in fiscal year 2024, even as revenue from operations grew by 12%.

Tata Consumer’s Response

In a letter titled “Clarification on News Article Titled – Starbucks to Exit India Due to High Costs, Bad Taste, and Mounting Losses,” TCPL firmly denied the report.

“The Company would like to state that the information in the said article is baseless,” TCPL stated in correspondence with the National Stock Exchange of India, Bombay Stock Exchange, and Calcutta Stock Exchange.

Speaking to CNBC-TV18, Tata Consumer Products reiterated that claims of Starbucks exiting India were “completely false and baseless,” emphasizing its strong relationship with Starbucks, rooted in shared values and commitment to India.

Meanwhile, Tata Consumer CEO Sunil D’Souza confirmed to Reuters that while there will be delays in opening new Starbucks stores, this decision is tied to a decline in foot traffic in Indian cafes rather than any plans to exit the market.
