Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi announced on Thursday that the Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued a notice to Apple Inc. regarding alleged performance issues with iPhones following the iOS 18 software update.

“The department, after reviewing these grievances, has issued a notice to #Apple through the CCPA, seeking their response on the matter,” Joshi shared in a post on X.

The notice requests Apple to provide an explanation regarding the reported technical issues users faced after installing the software update on their iPhones.

According to PTI, complaints about these performance issues were registered on the National Consumer Helpline. This marks another instance of regulatory scrutiny faced by the tech giant in India, a key growth market for smartphone manufacturers.

Past Warnings to Apple

This isn’t the first time Apple has come under the radar of Indian authorities. Last year, the central government issued warnings to certain Apple users over two software vulnerabilities that posed a “high risk” of unauthorized access, data theft, or system control by hackers.

The advisory, issued by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, highlighted a ‘high’ severity risk affecting Intel-based Mac systems, including macOS, iOS, and iPadOS devices. The government had also flagged multiple vulnerabilities in Apple products, including iPhones, that could lead to spoofing or the leakage of sensitive information.

Chris Brown Throws Doc With Defamation Lawsuit Over 500$ Million Claim

Newly surfaced court documents related to a $500 million defamation lawsuit reveal that Chris Brown is accusing Warner Bros., Discovery, Ample Entertainment, and other individuals behind the Chris Brown: A History of Violence docuseries of fabricating lies to tarnish his reputation. The controversial singer is fighting back against allegations in the documentary that portray him as “a serial rapist and a sexual abuser.”

Targeting the central figure in the series, referred to as Jane Doe, Brown argued that her accusations have been repeatedly discredited, emphasizing that he has never been found guilty of “any sex-related crime.” He alleges the claims in the documentary are a rehash of a previous lawsuit filed by Jane Doe, which she later withdrew due to its lack of credibility and false assertions.

Brown contends that the docuseries unfairly capitalizes on his troubled past, particularly focusing on his 2009 arrest for physically assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna. While acknowledging and taking responsibility for his past mistakes, the “Under the Influence” singer asserts that he has spent over a decade working to rebuild his reputation. The ID documentary, he claims, undermines these efforts by resurrecting a narrative that harms both his career and business opportunities.

In addition to seeking justice, Brown has pledged to donate part of the $500 million in damages he is pursuing to support victims of sexual abuse, further signaling his commitment to making amends.

Released on October 27, 2024, during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Chris Brown: A History of Violence is backed by Ample Entertainment. The official synopsis states the documentary “charts Chris Brown’s past all the way back to his troubled childhood, explores the lasting impact of the cycle of abuse, and poses the question: how does a man with such a violent public record maintain his superstar status?” Featuring expert analysis and survivor testimony, the series delves into the psychological aftermath of abuse, sparking both controversy and conversation.

This latest legal battle reflects Brown’s ongoing struggle to reshape public perception while addressing the challenges posed by his contentious history.

Donald Trump Withdraws U.S From Paris Agreement

0

President Donald Trump has withdrawn the United States (US) from the Paris Climate Agreement for the second time in a decade, signing a series of executive actions shortly after taking office on Monday.

This decision, which removes the world’s largest historic emitter from global efforts to combat climate change, will take effect one year after formal notification. The move comes just days after 2024 was declared the hottest year on record and the first in which the average global temperature surpassed the 1.5°C threshold above pre-industrial levels.

The consequences of climate change are being felt worldwide, marked by increasing disasters and extreme heat. In 2024, ocean surface temperatures and the upper 2,000 meters of ocean depth reached their highest recorded levels.

Experts have criticized Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, a multilateral initiative aimed at limiting global warming to below 2°C, with an aspirational target of 1.5°C. Harjeet Singh, climate activist and founding director of the Satat Sampada Climate Foundation, described the decision as a moral failure and a direct threat to global solidarity, multilateral cooperation, and climate justice. Singh argued that prioritizing oil and gas expansion accelerates the path toward climate catastrophe, disproportionately affecting vulnerable communities. He noted that this reckless move undermines financial support needed by developing nations like India, which have made significant strides in climate action despite limited resources.

Manjeev Singh Puri, a former climate negotiator and diplomat, highlighted the adverse implications of the US withdrawal for global climate efforts. “The US, as the largest and most capable economy, has a critical role to play,” Puri said, though he noted that the country remains a signatory to the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change). He added that US sub-national and corporate efforts to advance green technologies may continue under pro-innovation policies. However, he warned of weakened European capabilities to fill the void left by the US, unlike the situation in 2016.

Debbie Weyl, acting US director at the World Resources Institute, condemned Trump’s actions, stating they threaten America’s clean energy leadership and could harm its economy and public health. Weyl pointed out that rolling back climate policies that have created over 400,000 well-paying jobs will hurt workers and increase energy costs for American families. Despite these challenges, she emphasized that a coalition of governors, mayors, and other leaders remains committed to enacting low-carbon policies that drive job creation, reduce costs, and foster cleaner communities. “The clean energy revolution will continue, regardless of who occupies the White House,” Weyl affirmed.

Actor Saif Ali Khan is currently undergoing surgery at Lilavati Hospital after being stabbed during an attempted burglary at his Bandra residence in the early hours of Thursday. Doctors have confirmed that no vital organs were harmed and his spine remains unaffected.

In an official statement to the media, Kareena Kapoor Khan’s team shared, “There was an attempted burglary at Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan’s residence last night. Saif sustained an injury on his arm and is currently in the hospital undergoing a medical procedure. The rest of the family is safe and doing well.”

The statement further urged the media and fans to refrain from speculation, stating, “We request everyone to remain patient and avoid any speculation as the police are actively investigating the matter.” The statement was signed by Team Kareena Kapoor Khan.

Earlier in the day, Saif’s team also released a statement confirming the incident: “There was an attempted burglary at Mr. Saif Ali Khan’s residence. He is currently hospitalized and undergoing surgery. We kindly ask the media and fans to be patient as this is an active police investigation. We will provide updates as they become available.”

Details of the Incident and Saif’s Injuries
According to reports, an unidentified individual broke into Saif Ali Khan’s home around 2:30 a.m. on Thursday and got into an altercation with the household staff. When Saif attempted to intervene and calm the situation, the intruder attacked him, resulting in injuries. Mumbai Police are actively investigating the incident.

At the time of the attack, Kareena Kapoor and their two sons, Taimur and Jeh, were present in the house. Saif’s elder son, Ibrahim Ali Khan, later arrived and took him to Lilavati Hospital for treatment.

Dr. Niraj Uttamani, COO of Lilavati Hospital, confirmed that Saif sustained six injuries. A doctor, speaking anonymously, revealed that a fragment of the knife was found in his body and doctors are still assessing the extent of the injuries. Despite the wounds, Saif is able to move his limbs, indicating that his spine is unharmed.

India Welcomes Peace Negotiations Between Israel and Hamas

0

India on Thursday welcomed the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas and reaffirmed its call for a return to dialogue and diplomacy.

The deal, announced by U.S. President Joe Biden and Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani on Wednesday, establishes a 42-day truce and a hostage release, set to begin on January 19. This ceasefire follows over 460 days of conflict that has severely impacted Gaza.

“We welcome the agreement for the release of hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza,” stated India’s Ministry of External Affairs.

“We hope this leads to the safe and sustained delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza’s people. India has consistently advocated for the release of all hostages, a ceasefire, and a return to dialogue and diplomacy,” the statement added.

The conflict began after Hamas launched deadly attacks on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing nearly 1,200 people. In response, Israel’s military actions in Gaza have resulted in the deaths of over 46,000 Palestinians.

Qatar’s prime minister noted that Israel and Hamas are still finalizing logistical details of the truce. Israel’s prime minister’s office also acknowledged that certain aspects of the deal remain unresolved, and it still requires approval from the Israeli cabinet.

During the ceasefire’s initial six weeks, there will be a limited prisoner exchange, partial Israeli troop withdrawal from Gaza, and increased humanitarian aid to the region. Reports indicate that 33 Israeli hostages taken on October 7 will be released in exchange for numerous Palestinian prisoners.

Approximately 100 Israeli hostages are still believed to be in Gaza, though some are presumed dead.

Initially, India expressed strong support for Israel following the Hamas attacks, consistent with its “zero tolerance” policy on terrorism. However, India later adopted a more balanced stance due to concerns raised by its Arab partners.

India maintains close strategic ties with Israel, while its relationships with Arab nations are crucial for energy security and defense cooperation. Additionally, India is concerned about the conflict’s escalation, given that nearly nine million Indians reside in West Asia, with around six million in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

As the conflict continued, India consistently urged Israel to consider humanitarian concerns, advocating for the free flow of aid to Gaza and a return to diplomacy focused on achieving a two-state solution.

Donald Trump is Looking to For Options to ‘Preserve’ TikTok

0

Florida Representative Mike Waltz, President-elect Trump’s choice for national security adviser, revealed in a Wednesday interview that Trump is considering ways to “preserve” TikTok.

Waltz shared this insight after Fox News anchor Bret Baier questioned him about a Washington Post report suggesting Trump might issue an executive order to halt the enforcement of a federal law that could ban TikTok nationwide by Sunday.

The Supreme Court recently heard arguments challenging the law, brought by TikTok, its China-based parent company ByteDance, and app users. The Justices appeared inclined to uphold the law, which mandates that ByteDance either divest from TikTok over national security concerns or face a ban in the U.S.

Addressing the situation, Waltz stated, “If the Supreme Court rules in favor of the law, President Trump has been clear on two points: TikTok is a widely used platform that has greatly benefited his campaign, and he is committed to protecting users’ data.”

Highlighting Trump’s negotiation style, Waltz added, “He’s a deal maker. I can’t reveal details about upcoming executive orders, but we’re working to create space for a deal to happen.”

Meanwhile, Pam Bondi, Trump’s nominee for attorney general, avoided answering whether she would support a TikTok ban during a Senate hearing on Wednesday.

Trump’s stance on TikTok has shifted since his first term when he sought to ban the app over security concerns. However, during his 2024 presidential campaign, he joined TikTok to engage younger voters—particularly young men—by sharing bold, viral content. He even vowed to “save TikTok” during the campaign, crediting the platform for helping him attract more youth voters.

Meta All Set to Lay Off 3,600 Employees; Zuckerberg Wants to ‘Raise the Bar’

0

Meta plans to lay off around 3,600 employees deemed low performers and replace them with new hires, according to an internal memo reported by Bloomberg on Tuesday.

The parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp confirmed to AFP that CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s decision will impact about five percent of its workforce. As of September, Meta employed roughly 72,400 people.

“I’ve decided to raise the bar on performance management and move out low-performers faster,” Zuckerberg stated.

He explained that these performance-based layoffs aim to ensure the company retains “the strongest talent” while creating room to “bring new people in.”

Major U.S. corporations often implement performance-based job cuts. Microsoft recently announced similar layoffs, affecting less than one percent of its staff, according to Business Insider.

Meta’s restructuring comes amid broader organizational changes ahead of Donald Trump’s return to the White House on January 20.

Zuckerberg has shown increased alignment with conservative viewpoints, having attended private dinners with Trump and appointing a Republican to lead Meta’s public affairs division.

Recently, Zuckerberg also ended Meta’s U.S. fact-checking program, which targeted misinformation on its platforms. The program had been criticized by conservatives for allegedly censoring content.

Meta is now introducing a feature allowing users to add context to posts, similar to the system on X (formerly Twitter) promoted by Elon Musk.

Additionally, the company has reduced its diversity programs and eased content moderation policies on Facebook and Instagram, particularly regarding certain types of hostile speech.

Parliament Panel Calls For Meta Executives Over Zuckerberg Remark

0

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Nishikant Dubey, chair of the parliamentary standing committee on communications and information technology, announced on Tuesday that the panel will summon Meta executives over allegations of “tarnishing” India’s image. This move follows Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s recent comments regarding the 2024 Lok Sabha election results.

In a podcast on January 10, Zuckerberg remarked that public trust in government information declined after the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to electoral losses for incumbent governments in 2024. His statement drew sharp criticism from Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who labeled the comments as “factually incorrect” and urged Zuckerberg to “uphold facts and credibility.”

Reacting to the controversy, Dubey demanded an apology from Meta.

“My committee will summon Meta for spreading incorrect information. Misrepresenting facts about any democratic country damages its global image. Meta must apologize to the Indian Parliament and its citizens for this mistake,” Dubey posted on X.

Speaking to ANI, Dubey confirmed that the committee would summon Meta executives between January 20 and 24.

“Zuckerberg claimed that globally, incumbent governments faced backlash post-COVID, and he mentioned India in that context. His statement is concerning, especially when social media platforms already face criticism for harmful content involving women and children. By making such remarks, Zuckerberg appears to be interfering in India’s democracy and misleading the global community by falsely suggesting that the BJP or NDA lost the elections. Since Parliament represents 1.4 billion Indians, and Zuckerberg misrepresented the election outcome, we have decided to summon Meta executives. They must apologize, or the committee will recommend all possible legal action,” Dubey stated.

Dubey also noted that the committee would be on a study tour to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from January 15 to 20. He plans to consult with members during the tour and schedule Meta’s appearance between January 20 and 24. Dubey did not provide further comments when approached.

Impeached South Korean President Gets Arrested Over Failed Martial Law

0

South Korea’s impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol was arrested on Wednesday following his failed attempt to impose martial law. The arrest occurred after hundreds of anti-corruption investigators and police stormed the Presidential compound, ending a weeks-long standoff.

Yoon, charged with insurrection for his brief effort to enforce martial law last month, has become the first sitting president in South Korean history to be arrested.

Before dawn on Wednesday, hundreds of officers from the Corruption Investigation Office advanced toward the presidential residence. Some scaled the compound’s walls and navigated back trails to access the main building.

This marked their second attempt to detain Yoon. The initial effort on January 3 was unsuccessful due to a tense standoff with the Presidential Security Service (PSS), who resisted investigators executing the arrest warrant.

Yoon’s lawyer, Seok Dong-hyeon, announced Wednesday morning that the president agreed to cooperate with investigators and would leave the residence to prevent a “serious incident.”

“President Yoon has decided to personally appear at the Corruption Investigation Office today,” Seok stated on Facebook, mentioning that Yoon would also deliver a public address.

However, investigators confirmed shortly after that Yoon had been officially arrested.

“The Joint Investigation Headquarters executed an arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol today (January 15) at 10:33 am (0130 GMT),” officials stated.

According to Reuters, Yoon’s arrest followed confrontations with his security guards, prompting investigators to use ladders to breach the residence in Seoul after being blocked at the main gate.

Investigators Arrest Presidential Security Chief Amid Yoon Suk Yeol Standoff

Kim Sung-hoon, the acting chief of the Presidential Security Service, was arrested for obstructing investigators during their initial attempt to detain President Yoon Suk Yeol, according to Yonhap News Agency.

Yoon had resisted arrest following his failed December 3 power grab, which triggered South Korea’s most severe political crisis in decades. He had ordered soldiers to storm Parliament to prevent lawmakers from voting against his actions.

Once a prominent prosecutor, Yoon had already been suspended by lawmakers. If the court-approved arrest warrant were enforced, he would become the first sitting president in South Korean history to be detained, AFP reported.

“The execution of the presidential arrest warrant has begun,” acting President Choi Sang-mok confirmed in a statement, emphasizing the importance of upholding law and order during this critical time.

Chaotic Scenes in Seoul

In a tense morning in Seoul, unarmed investigators from the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) and police officers attempted to enter Yoon’s residence but were blocked by unidentified guards at the entrance, AFP reported.

Clashes broke out between investigators and those defending the compound. Approximately 20 investigators were later seen scaling ladders to breach the residence, according to TV footage cited by AFP.

Groups labeled “Police” and “CIO” were observed advancing up the roads toward Yoon’s hillside compound, carrying ladders and entering through multiple access points.

Ongoing Negotiations and Escalating Tension

Yoon’s lawyer, Seok Dong-hyeon, stated on Facebook that negotiations were in progress for the president to voluntarily surrender due to the “risk of a serious situation” between opposing forces.

At least one individual was injured during the standoff and was transported by emergency services.

Yoon’s legal team was seen outside the residence protesting the execution of the arrest warrant, while a white police van attempting to enter the premises was unsuccessful.

Security Tightens as Supporters Gather

Investigators also tried accessing the residence via a mountain hiking trail, Yonhap News TV reported. Amid the operation, police arrested Kim Seong-hun, the acting head of the presidential guard.

By early Wednesday, police had completely blocked the main road leading to Yoon’s residence with bus barricades as thousands of his staunch supporters gathered outside.

Kangana Ranaut Reveals Why She Didn’t Work with Salman Khan

0

Actor Kangana Ranaut recently shared insights into her relationship with Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, calling him a “good friend.” She revealed that although they’ve had multiple opportunities to collaborate on projects, it hasn’t materialized yet.

Kangana on Her Bond with Salman Khan

In an interview with News18, Kangana spoke about her friendship with Salman and the possibility of working together. When asked if they might share screen space in the future, Kangana admitted that while several chances to collaborate had come up, none of them worked out.

“Salman is a good friend of mine, and we’ve had many opportunities to work together. But somehow, it just never happened. Let’s see what the future holds,” she remarked.

Earlier, during a film trailer launch, Kangana praised Salman, saying, “If you look at Salman ji, he has such a massive fan following and receives so much love. I believe he is currently the most loved and popular star in the country. Those who adore him will continue to do so. But those who are bothered by his success—be it competitors or others in the film industry—will naturally dislike him. People question why he holds such a position, and that makes him bothersome to some.”

Kangana Ranaut’s Upcoming Film

Kangana is now gearing up for the release of her first solo directorial film, Emergency. She portrays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, focusing on the final years of her rule, including the Emergency period and Operation Bluestar.

The film features a stellar cast, including:

  • Anupam Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan
  • Shreyas Talpade as a young Atal Bihari Vajpayee
  • Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw
  • Mahima Chaudhry as Pupul Jayakar
  • Late Satish Kaushik as Jagjivan Ram

After several delays, Emergency is set to release in theaters on January 17.
