Shahid Kapoor Reveals He Didn’t Grow Up Around his Father

Shahid Kapoor and his father's complicated relationship.

Shahid Kapoor was raised by his mother, actor Neelima Azim, after her separation from his father, actor Pankaj Kapur. In a recent interview, Shahid spoke about the challenges Neelima faced as a single parent and how those experiences shaped his sense of responsibility and protectiveness towards her.

In an interview with Screen, Shahid shared, “My mom was quite young when she had me. We were more like friends, and she always took me wherever she went. Since I was her firstborn and elder son, I naturally felt a sense of responsibility. I didn’t grow up around my father, so in such situations, you don’t think about age—you just feel like the ‘man of the house.’ Of course, I didn’t have much to offer at the time, but I had the courage to stand up for my mother. I always felt protective and deeply connected to her. She treated me like a friend, and that bond remains unchanged to this day.”

Shahid recalled how he was eager to start working early in life, beginning his journey with dance at 14 and later appearing in music videos and advertisements by 18. “I think a lot of it stemmed from the fact that my mom was a single parent. I didn’t want to add to her financial burden, so the only thought in my mind was, ‘I need to start making money.’ By the time I was 14-16, I wanted to support her. She was managing everything on her own, and I felt the need to contribute. If nothing else, I wanted to at least take care of my own expenses,” he said.

Supreme Court Denies Appeal Against VIP Darshan Fees

Supreme Court rejects PIL on VIP Darshan.

The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain a public interest litigation (PIL) challenging the practice of charging an additional fee for “VIP darshan” and granting “preferential, selective, and special treatment” to certain individuals in temples.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar stated that the matter should be decided by society and temple management, and the court could not intervene.

“While we may hold the view that no special treatment should be given, this court cannot issue directions. We do not find this to be a fit case for exercising jurisdiction under Article 32 of the Constitution. However, we clarify that dismissing the petition does not prevent the appropriate authorities from taking necessary action,” the bench observed.

Advocate Akash Vashishtha, representing the petitioner, argued that a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) was needed, particularly for the 12 Jyotirlingas, as the practice of VIP darshan was arbitrary.

The petition, filed by Vijay Kishor Goswami, a ‘sevait’ at Shri Radha Madan Mohan Temple in Vrindavan, claimed that the practice violated Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution, discriminating against devotees who could not afford the fee.

The plea raised concerns over the additional charges for expedited temple access, noting that fees ranging between ₹400 and ₹500 for special darshan privileges created a divide between wealthy devotees and those unable to afford them, especially women, persons with disabilities, and senior citizens.

Despite representations made to the home ministry, only Andhra Pradesh received a directive, while states like Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh remained unaddressed.

The petition sought:

  • A declaration that charging an additional fee for VIP darshan violates constitutional rights of equality and religious freedom.
  • Equal treatment for all devotees within temple premises.
  • Framing of SOPs by the Centre to ensure equitable access to temples.
  • Establishment of a national board to oversee temple management and administration across the country.

Donald Trump Threatens 100% Tariffs to BRICS Members, Including India

Donald Trump's new tariff threats.

On Thursday, former U.S. President Donald Trump cautioned BRICS nations against replacing the U.S. dollar as the global reserve currency, reiterating his earlier threat of imposing 100% tariffs following his victory in the November elections.

In a post on TruthSocial, Trump stated, “We will require a commitment from these seemingly hostile countries that they will neither create a new BRICS currency nor support any alternative to replace the mighty U.S. dollar. Otherwise, they will face 100% tariffs.”

He further added, They can go find another sucker nation. There is no chance that BRICS will replace the U.S. dollar in international trade or anywhere else. Any country that tries should prepare for tariffs and say goodbye to America!”

In December 2024, Russia had asserted that any pressure on BRICS nations to use the U.S. dollar would only strengthen demand for national currencies.

A 2024 study by the Atlantic Council’s GeoEconomics Center highlighted continued global reliance on the U.S. dollar as the primary reserve currency. It also found that previous efforts, including the euro and alternative currency initiatives, had failed to displace the dollar’s dominance.

BRICS comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Indonesia, and the United Arab Emirates. While the group lacks a common currency, discussions around a potential alternative have gained momentum, particularly after Russia faced sanctions from Western nations due to the war in Ukraine.

A broader global shift away from dollar dependence has been driven by the U.S. economy’s performance, changing tax and monetary policies, and geopolitical tensions, according to a Reuters report.

Trump has also vowed to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico starting February 1, aiming to curb illegal immigration and the inflow of opioids like fentanyl. Additionally, he has warned China of a 10% import tariff, citing the country’s role in fentanyl distribution as a threat to the U.S.

American Airlines crash near DC.

A regional jet operated by American Airlines collided midair with a helicopter while landing at Reagan Washington National Airport on Wednesday night, according to the Associated Press.

Search crews have recovered 18 bodies, with no survivors found so far, CBS News reported.

The Federal Aviation Administration stated that the collision occurred around 9 p.m. ET when the regional jet, which had taken off from Wichita, Kansas, struck a military Black Hawk helicopter as it approached the airport runway.

According to CBS News, American Airlines Flight 5342 was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members. An official told CBS that the Black Hawk Sikorsky H-60 had three U.S. Army soldiers on board.

Data from the aircraft’s radio transponder indicated that the flight experienced a rapid loss of altitude over the Potomac River.

In response to the incident, Ronald Reagan Airport has suspended all take-offs and landings, the airport operator announced in a post on X.

The Pentagon confirmed that the helicopter had departed from Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and an official stated that it was on a training flight, as reported by AP.

A search and rescue operation is underway near the Potomac River, involving the DC Fire Department, police officials, and the U.S. Coast Guard. During a press conference, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser noted that first responders were working in “dark and cold conditions.”

American Airlines CEO Robert Isom expressed “deep sorrow” over the crash and stated that the airline is “fully cooperating” with the National Transportation Safety Board’s investigation.

U.S. President Donald Trump released a statement saying, “I have been fully briefed on the terrible accident at Reagan National Airport. May God bless their souls. Thank you to our incredible first responders. I am monitoring the situation and will provide updates as they arise.”

Later, Trump posted on TruthSocial, questioning why the plane had its lights on despite clear weather and why air traffic control did not direct the helicopter properly.

“This is a bad situation that looks like it should have been prevented. NOT GOOD!” he wrote.

Newly confirmed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the Pentagon is “actively monitoring” the situation. Meanwhile, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said he had spoken with the President and confirmed that the Department of Transportation was coordinating with the mayor and first responders to provide support.

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz acknowledged that fatalities had occurred but noted that the total number of people on board was still unclear. “While we don’t yet know how many on board were lost, we know there are fatalities,” Cruz wrote on X.

Bryson DeChambeau Wishes to Make an Impact in India

Bryson DeChambeau's plans for India.

GURUGRAM: From the moment he stepped off his chartered flight after a brief visit to the Taj Mahal and checked into the DLF Golf and Country Club late Tuesday, to his mesmerizing performance at a golf clinic on Wednesday evening, Bryson DeChambeau has been the center of attention at India’s maiden International Series event.

The buzz surrounding DeChambeau is palpable. His name is spoken with admiration in hospitality suites and player lounges, with comparisons drawn to golfing legends Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. Such is his star power that the club has opened its doors to fans eager to witness the reigning U.S. Open champion in action.

A record-breaking crowd of around 10,000 spectators is expected to gather each day—an unprecedented turnout for Indian golf. The last time the country saw such enthusiasm was during Tiger Woods’ visit to the Delhi Golf Club 11 years ago. Additionally, it has been nearly six decades since a reigning major winner played in India, the last being Peter Thompson in 1966.

Fully aware of the significance of his visit, the 31-year-old DeChambeau remarked, “I’m here to educate, entertain, and inspire. These are the reasons I play golf. India has immense potential, and golf needs to grow here. There’s so much more to come.”

The ‘Mad Scientist’ of Golf

A YouTube sensation with 1.7 million subscribers, DeChambeau has revolutionized the sport with his analytical approach and power-driven game. Nicknamed the ‘Mad Scientist,’ he embraces quirks that make him unique—distracting his Crushers teammate Paul Casey mid-interview, refusing to touch a trophy before winning it, or unleashing a monstrous second shot on the par-5 18th that lands just 10 feet from the flag, leaving spectators in awe.

Yet beneath the showmanship lies a relentless work ethic. “I practice as hard as I can to create a repeatable motion. If something feels off, it means I haven’t worked hard enough or something in my swing needs adjustment, he explained.

His meticulous approach is well-known among teammates. “Bryson is wired differently,” said Anirban Lahiri. “He analyzes everything—physics, biomechanics, swing mechanics—whatever gives him an edge, he pursues at 150%.”

Casey echoed the sentiment: “Watching him prepare hurts my brain. He swings with such power that even the sound of his shots is different. His mindset is entirely scientific.”

DeChambeau’s attention to detail extends to floating golf balls to determine their center of gravity, measuring course slopes, and tracking putting speeds with precision. “If he thinks a surface is too fast, he calculates the exact putter draw distance to optimize his shot. He quantifies everything—he’s not a feel player,” Casey noted.

When asked about his training process, DeChambeau leaned back and chuckled, “Do you have an hour?” before breaking down his rigorous regimen. From fine-tuning his putting, chipping, and wedge play to ensuring every shot is meticulously calculated, his preparations leave nothing to chance.

On a course he described as “diabolical,” DeChambeau’s scientific precision and exhaustive practice routine may well be the key to success.

Supreme Court Demands For an End to Manual Scavenging in Metro Cities

Supreme Court's order on manual scavenging.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered an immediate end to manual scavenging in major metropolitan cities, directing municipal commissioners and chief executive officers of six major cities, including Delhi and Mumbai, to comply with the directive and submit a compliance report within two weeks.

The order was issued as part of the court’s oversight of its October 2023 judgment, which mandated all states and Union Territories to take comprehensive steps to eradicate the inhumane practice. Expressing disappointment over continued violations, the court cited a recent incident in Delhi where two men in their late 20s lost their lives while cleaning a sewer.

“A well-considered order was passed by us, yet people are still dying… The time has come to issue stricter directions,” observed a bench comprising Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Aravind Kumar.

Focusing on Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, the bench ruled, “Manual sewage cleaning and manual scavenging must be stopped immediately in all top metropolitan cities.”

The court also instructed municipal commissioners or chief executive officers of these cities to submit affidavits by February 13, detailing “how and when manual scavenging/sewer cleaning has been stopped.” The matter will be reviewed on February 19.

Senior advocate K Parmeshwar, acting as amicus curiae, noted that while affidavits would likely claim full compliance, he remained skeptical. His concerns were based on recent data presented by the Centre, which showed that out of 775 districts nationwide, only 465 had been declared “manual scavenging-free,” with data from 310 districts still pending.

The bench warned, “If false affidavits are filed, it will amount to contempt of court.” Parmeshwar further pointed out that states had yet to comply with the October 2023 directive to conduct a comprehensive survey, with some still in the process of forming survey committees.

Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, representing the Union government, emphasized that sanitation falls under state jurisdiction. She stated that the Centre had coordinated meetings with chief secretaries and district magistrates to ensure compliance but noted that while some states had conducted surveys, others had yet to respond.

The Supreme Court’s October 20, 2023, judgment had highlighted the deplorable conditions faced by manual scavengers, declaring, “Ours is a battle not for wealth or power. It is a battle for freedom. It is a battle for the reclamation of human dignity.” It directed the Centre and states to provide ₹30 lakh in compensation to the families of individuals who died while cleaning sewers and ordered the complete eradication of manual scavenging nationwide.

The ruling also stressed the need to replace manual cleaning with mechanized methods and prohibit individuals from being employed for such hazardous work. Government data presented in the Lok Sabha in July 2022 revealed that at least 347 people had died while cleaning sewers and septic tanks between 2018 and 2022, with Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Delhi accounting for 40% of these fatalities.

“Following our order, no person should have been forced to enter a sewer for cleaning. Yet, two people have recently died in Delhi,” the bench remarked.

The court’s directive stemmed from a public interest litigation filed by Balram Singh, who sought a nationwide survey of manual scavengers, compensation for victims’ families, and rehabilitation measures for those engaged in the profession.

In a previous hearing in December, the court underscored the gravity of the issue, stating, “This is a matter of human dignity, and it is close to our hearts. We are willing to go to any extent to enforce our ruling.”

Meta Ready to Pay $25 Million For Settling Trump Lawsuit

Meta has agreed to pay $25 million to settle a lawsuit filed by former President Donald Trump after the company suspended his accounts following the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, according to three sources familiar with the matter.

This settlement marks another instance of a major corporation resolving litigation with Trump, who has previously vowed retribution against his critics and rivals. The agreement comes as Meta and its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, seek to strengthen ties with the new Trump administration, following the example of other major technology firms.

The sources, speaking anonymously on Wednesday, revealed that $22 million of the settlement will go to a nonprofit organization designated for Trump’s future presidential library, while the remainder will cover legal fees and other litigants. The Wall Street Journal first reported the settlement.

In November, Zuckerberg met with Trump at his private club in Florida in an effort to mend relations, joining other business, technology, and government figures attempting to do the same. During the dinner, Trump raised the issue of the lawsuit, prompting two months of negotiations that led to the settlement, the sources said.

Meta also contributed $1 million to Trump’s inaugural committee, and Zuckerberg was among several billionaires seated in a prime location at Trump’s recent swearing-in at the Capitol Rotunda, alongside Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and X (formerly Twitter) owner Elon Musk.

Prior to Trump’s inauguration, Meta announced it would discontinue fact-checking on its platform, a long-standing demand of Trump and his allies.

Trump originally filed the lawsuit months after leaving office, condemning the social media bans as “illegal, shameful censorship of the American people.”

While platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Google are private companies that require users to accept their terms of service, Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act allows them to moderate content in “good faith” by removing posts that violate their standards. The law also generally shields internet companies from liability for content posted by users. However, Trump and some politicians have long argued that platforms like X and Facebook have misused these protections and should either lose or have them restricted.

Meta’s settlement follows ABC News’ agreement last month to pay $15 million toward Trump’s presidential library to settle a defamation lawsuit. The case stemmed from anchor George Stephanopoulos’ inaccurate on-air claim that Trump had been found civilly liable for raping writer E. Jean Carroll. Additionally, ABC agreed to pay $1 million in legal fees to Trump’s attorney, Alejandro Brito.

According to the settlement, ABC’s contribution is classified as a “charitable donation” earmarked for a nonprofit associated with Trump’s future presidential library.

Trump has frequently taken legal action against media organizations, arguing they have unfairly targeted him.

He has filed a lawsuit against CBS News, accusing the network of airing a misleading 60 Minutes interview with Vice President Kamala Harris, which he claims amounted to “partisan and unlawful election interference.” CBS has denied the allegations.

Additionally, Trump is suing The Des Moines Register, its parent company Gannett, and pollster Ann Selzer, alleging they violated the Iowa Consumer Fraud Act by releasing a pre-election poll that significantly underestimated his support in the state. Both the newspaper and Selzer have denied wrongdoing.

Alibaba Debuts New AI Model Version; Claims it Beats DeepSeek-V3

Alibaba enters AI race.

Chinese tech giant Alibaba on Wednesday introduced an upgraded version of its Qwen 2.5 artificial intelligence model, asserting that it surpasses the highly acclaimed DeepSeek-V3, according to Reuters.

The unexpected launch of the AI model on the first day of the Lunar New Year—a time when most Chinese people are on holiday—highlights the intense competition in the industry following the rapid rise of Chinese AI startup DeepSeek. The newcomer has shaken both domestic and international rivals with its breakthroughs.

“Qwen 2.5-Max outperforms GPT-4o, DeepSeek-V3, and Llama-3.1-405B across almost all benchmarks,” Alibaba’s cloud unit stated in an official WeChat announcement, referencing OpenAI and Meta’s most advanced open-source AI models.

DeepSeek’s Disruptive Rise in AI

On January 10, DeepSeek introduced its AI assistant powered by DeepSeek-V3, and just ten days later, it launched the R1 model—a low-cost, high-performance AI system that sent shockwaves through the industry.

Merely two days after the release of DeepSeek-R1, TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, rolled out an updated version of its flagship AI model, claiming it had surpassed Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s o1 in AIME—a benchmark evaluating AI comprehension and responsiveness to complex instructions.

DeepSeek’s disruptive impact was already evident in May 2024, when the launch of its DeepSeek-V2 model triggered a price war in China’s AI market. In response, Alibaba’s cloud division slashed AI model prices by up to 97%, prompting other companies to follow suit.

Despite these market shifts, DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng emphasized in a July interview with Chinese media outlet Waves that his company was unfazed by pricing battles, stating that achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI) remains its ultimate goal.

Rakhi Sawant plans to get married again.

Actor Rakhi Sawant has confirmed that she will marry Pakistani actor and police officer Dodi Khan. In an interview with News18, Rakhi spoke about her third marriage, revealing that she and Dodi are deeply in love.

Expressing her feelings, Rakhi stated, “He is my love. We love each other. He is from Pakistan, and I am from India, so ours will be a love marriage.” She also took a dig at her ex-husband, Adil Khan Durrani, accusing him of spreading false information about her.

“Adil is jealous of my marriage and is trying to gain attention by spreading false rumors. I don’t want to give any publicity to that idiot,” she remarked.

Rakhi also addressed public curiosity surrounding her wedding through an Instagram post. In Hindi, she questioned, “Why is everyone so concerned about my wedding? I can marry wherever I want—India, Pakistan, China, Bhutan, America, London, or Canada. Live and let live. Why does it matter to you?”

Rakhi’s Hilarious Take on Selena Gomez Crying

Rakhi then brought up singer Selena Gomez’s recent emotional moment. While Selena had broken down over U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to deport illegal immigrants, Rakhi linked it to her own wedding in a humorous twist.

“Why are you crying so much after hearing about my wedding?” Rakhi quipped. She jokingly added, “You’re acting like I stole your groom! Selena, what’s wrong? Are you okay? Dodi isn’t your boyfriend, right? So why are you crying?”

She also shared a video alongside a photo of Selena in tears, playfully addressing the singer.

Rakhi was previously married to Adil Khan Durrani, but their relationship ended in 2023 amid serious allegations. She accused him of infidelity, domestic violence, financial misconduct, and torture. Adil was arrested on February 7, 2023, from Rakhi’s residence and spent five months in jail before being released.

Before Adil, Rakhi was married to Ritesh Singh. The two tied the knot in 2019 but divorced in 2022.

Akhilesh Yadav Targets Govt Over Maha Kumbh Stampede; ‘World Class System’ Gets Exposed

Akhilesh Yadav on maha kumbh stampede.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has strongly condemned the stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, which has reportedly claimed 15 lives.

He criticized those who falsely touted a “world-class system” at the event, demanding they take moral responsibility for the tragedy and resign from their positions. Yadav also called for the Indian Army to take over the management of the Maha Kumbh Mela, citing a loss of faith in the Uttar Pradesh government’s handling of the event.

“Now that the reality behind the ‘world-class system’ claims has been exposed, those responsible for such false propaganda should accept moral responsibility for the lives lost and step down,” he stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

To restore faith among devotees and the saint community, Yadav insisted that the Army should immediately take charge of the Maha Kumbh’s administration instead of the Uttar Pradesh government.

“In order to rebuild trust in the system, the management of the Maha Kumbh must be handed over to the Army at the earliest,” added the Lok Sabha MP from Kannauj.

Earlier, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister urged the state government to take swift action to assist the injured and prevent further chaos.

He suggested deploying air ambulances for critical patients and called for the prompt identification and return of the deceased to their families. Additionally, Yadav emphasized the need for heightened security measures, including aerial surveillance via helicopters, to maintain order at the event. The stampede occurred as thousands gathered for a holy dip in the Ganga on Mauni Amavasya, one of the Maha Kumbh’s most auspicious days.

A massive crowd had assembled at the site, and ambulances rushed in to transport the injured to a central hospital within the Mela grounds. According to sources familiar with the situation, at least 15 bodies had been brought to the hospital.
