On Wednesday, Pope Leo XIV extended an offer to mediate between warring nations, declaring his personal commitment to ensuring that peace prevails. “I will make every effort so that this peace may prevail,” he affirmed during a speech addressed to members of the Eastern Catholic Churches.

The newly elected U.S.-born pontiff—who assumed leadership of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics following the death of Pope Francis on April 21—also urged Christians in the Middle East to remain in their homelands despite ongoing unrest. Speaking in the packed Paul VI Hall at the Vatican, he addressed them with compassion: “Who better than you can sing a song of hope amid the abyss of violence?”

Citing regions such as the Holy Land, Ukraine, Lebanon, Syria, Tigray, and the Caucasus, Pope Leo condemned the widespread suffering caused by conflict. He called on believers to pray fervently for peace and emphasized the Vatican’s readiness to facilitate dialogue: “The Holy See is always willing to bring enemies together, face to face, to foster conversation so that people everywhere can rediscover hope and reclaim their dignity—the dignity of peace.”

Making an impassioned appeal to global leaders, he said, “The peoples of our world long for peace. To their leaders, I say with all my heart: let us meet, let us talk, let us negotiate.”

The Pope’s remarks came during a pre-planned event for the 2025 Jubilee Holy Year, dedicated to the 23 Eastern Catholic Churches across Eastern Europe, the Middle East, India, and parts of Africa. In keeping with a central theme of his papacy so far, Pope Leo expressed gratitude to those working toward reconciliation: “I thank God for those Christians—Eastern and Latin alike—who, especially in the Middle East, remain steadfast in their native lands, resisting the urge to flee.”

He concluded with a strong plea: “Christians must be given the real opportunity—not just words—to remain in their homelands with all the rights necessary for a secure and dignified existence. Please, let us strive to make this a reality.”

Sena UBT Criticizes Modi Government for Stalling Military Action: ‘A Missed Opportunity to…’

On Tuesday, the Shiv Sena (UBT) launched a scathing attack on the Narendra Modi-led central government, accusing it of missing a historic opportunity to fulfill Hindutva ideologue Veer Savarkar’s vision of ‘Akhand Bharat’.

In an editorial published in its mouthpiece Saamana, the party argued that if military operations had continued for just four more days, the Indian Army could have taken control of Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK), Karachi, and Lahore. However, it alleged that US President Donald Trump intervened, preventing this outcome.

“India should have at least reclaimed PoK and separated Balochistan from Pakistan before halting the offensive,” the editorial stated, as quoted by PTI.

The editorial further claimed, “Savarkar envisioned an undivided India stretching from PoK to Rameswaram and from the Indus to Assam, but the Modi government failed to act on this opportunity.” It went on to say that Prime Minister Modi no longer holds the right to invoke Savarkar’s name in politics.

Following a four-day exchange of drone and missile strikes between India and Pakistan, both countries reached an agreement to cease all military operations on land, air, and sea. The Saamana editorial criticized Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction for retreating when the chance arose to make ‘Akhand Bharat’ a reality.

Sena (UBT) MP and Saamana executive editor Sanjay Raut also remarked that Modi’s address to the nation on Monday didn’t reflect the tone of a victorious leader. Taking a jab at Modi and Shah, Raut said they might succeed in breaking political parties, but not Pakistan.

The criticism came in the wake of Operation Sindoor, a military response by India after the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people. India targeted nine terror-related locations across Pakistan and PoK. This was followed by retaliatory strikes from Pakistan, which included drones and missiles. India’s precision attacks ultimately forced Pakistan to stand down after four days of intense conflict.

A day after announcing his retirement from Test cricket, Virat Kohli visited Vrindavan along with his wife, Anushka Sharma. The couple, known for their spiritual beliefs, visited Shri Premanand Govind Sharan Ji Maharaj to seek blessings.

On Tuesday, several videos surfaced online showing Virat and Anushka in Vrindavan. They were seen wearing white outfits and face masks while traveling in a local cab. The video also showed them stepping out of the car and heading quietly into an ashram. Their children, Vamika and Akaay, were not seen with them during this visit.

Virat and Anushka have visited the spiritual leader multiple times in the past and often attend his satsangs. In some previous visits, they have also taken their kids along. Another photo from the visit showed them receiving blessings inside the ashram.

On Monday, Virat announced on Instagram that he is retiring from Test cricket, just over a month before the England tour. In his post, he reflected on his 14-year journey in the format, calling it deeply personal and expressing his gratitude for everything the game gave him.

Later, Anushka shared an emotional post praising his dedication and strength, saying that while the world may talk about his records, she’ll remember the quiet struggles and the love he gave to the game.

The visit to Vrindavan seemed like a peaceful and meaningful way for the couple to mark this big moment in Virat’s life.

SC Urges Centre to Fully Enforce Cashless Scheme for Road Accident Victims

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court directed the Central Government to ensure the cashless treatment scheme for road accident victims is implemented “in true letter and spirit,” granting each victim entitlement of up to ₹1.5 lakh per accident

A bench comprising Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan instructed the Centre to submit an affidavit by the end of August 2025, outlining the steps taken to implement the scheme, including the number of beneficiaries who have received treatment under it.

“We direct the Central Government to ensure that the scheme is implemented in its true letter and spirit,” the bench reiterated.

The Centre informed the Court that the scheme officially came into effect on May 5. According to a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, “any person being a victim of a road accident arising out of the use of a motor vehicle, occurring on any road, shall be entitled to cashless treatment in accordance with the provisions of this scheme.”

This directive follows the apex court’s earlier rebuke on April 28, when it criticized the Centre for delaying the formulation of the scheme despite a prior order on January 8. The court noted that even though Section 164A of the Motor Vehicles Act came into force on April 1, 2022, the Centre had not formulated the required scheme for interim relief.

“You are in contempt. You haven’t even bothered to seek an extension. What is going on? When will you frame the scheme? You don’t seem to care for your own statutes. This is a welfare provision meant to benefit the common man,” the bench remarked sharply.

The court also expressed concern over the authorities’ casual approach, especially in light of rapid highway expansion and increasing fatalities due to the lack of timely emergency treatment. It referred to the “golden hour” defined under Section 2 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which highlights the critical one-hour period following a traumatic injury during which timely medical attention can prevent death.

On January 8, the Court had specifically directed the Centre to frame a scheme under Section 162 for providing cashless treatment to accident victims during this golden hour.

The bench emphasized that immediate medical care must not be delayed due to financial constraints or procedural barriers, as such delays can cost lives. It also highlighted the government’s constitutional duty to uphold the right to life under Article 21.

The law requires insurance companies engaged in general insurance business in India to provide for the treatment of road accident victims, including care during the golden hour, in accordance with the scheme under the Motor Vehicles Act.

Despite the provision being active since April 2022, the lack of an implemented scheme prompted judicial intervention. The Centre had submitted a draft concept note, proposing a maximum treatment cap of ₹1.5 lakh per person and up to seven days of coverage. However, these limitations were challenged by the petitioner’s counsel, who argued that they fail to guarantee adequate medical care.

It also emerged that the General Insurance Council (GIC) had been assigned responsibility for managing hit-and-run compensation claims and was tasked with developing a portal to streamline documentation and reduce delays.

However, the Court noted that as of July 31, 2024, a total of 921 claims under the hit-and-run compensation scheme remained pending due to documentation issues. The GIC was directed to coordinate with claimants to address and resolve these deficiencies.

Dassault Shares Tumble as China’s J-10 Maker CAC Sees Stock Surge

Dassault Aviation, the French manufacturer of Rafale fighter jets reportedly used by India in the recent ‘Operation Sindoor’ against Pakistan, witnessed a sharp decline in its stock on the European market. On Monday, Dassault’s shares dropped by 7% intraday to EUR 292, fluctuating between EUR 291 and EUR 295 throughout the session.

In contrast, shares of China’s Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC)—the maker of J-10 jets, which are in service with the Pakistan Air Force—saw a substantial 20% surge on May 12. CAC’s stock soared to CNY 95.86, marking a 60% increase from the previous week, indicating a significant boost in investor confidence.

According to Live Mint, Dassault Aviation had initially seen a rally in its stock following India’s precision airstrike, Operation Sindoor, carried out on May 7. The Indian Air Force is reported to have used Rafale jets equipped with SCALP cruise missiles and HAMMER bombs in the strike, which hit targets about 200 kilometers within Pakistani territory without breaching its airspace.

Despite Dassault’s strong financials—including annual sales of EUR 6.24 billion and a net profit of EUR 924 million—and a broader 17.7% growth in France’s Aerospace & Defence sector over the past year, the stock has declined more than 10% over the last five trading sessions. It had reached EUR 325.8 on May 8, posting a year-to-date gain of 66.7% from its December 31 closing price of EUR 195.90.

Anshul Jain, Head of Research at Lakshmishree Investment and Securities, noted that heightened geopolitical tensions have introduced significant volatility. He warned that a breach below the EUR 291–292 support range could drive the stock down toward EUR 260, advising traders to remain cautious and prioritize risk management.

Meanwhile, India has finalized a major defence agreement with France to acquire 26 Rafale Marine fighter jets for approximately ₹63,000 crore. The purchase includes 22 single-seat Rafale-Ms and four twin-seat trainers, to be deployed on India’s aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. The Indian Air Force already operates 36 Rafales, supported by maintenance and training infrastructure at Ambala Air Base.

CAC’s Stock Rally Driven by Conflict

Chengdu Aircraft Corporation’s stock price climbed rapidly in the wake of the India-Pakistan conflict. On May 9, it reached CNY 88.88, up 50% from CNY 59.23 on May 6. Despite some profit-booking leading to a slight drop to CNY 79.88, the price remained 35% higher than its May 6 level.

Analysts attribute this rise to increased attention on CAC’s J-10C fighters, an upgraded variant of the original J-10. Developed by Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group and nicknamed the “Fierce Dragon” (Menglong), the J-10 first flew in 1998 and entered service with the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force in 2003. The advanced J-10C version was operational by 2018, and Pakistan began receiving exports in 2022.

Madras High Court Dismisses News Nation’s Review Petition on Dhoni Interrogatories Order

The Madras High Court has declined to reconsider its earlier decision allowing cricketer M.S. Dhoni to submit interrogatories—formal written questions—to the television channel News Nation as part of his ₹100 crore defamation suit. The suit, originally filed in 2014, accuses News Nation, Zee Media, and IPS officer Sampath Kumar of falsely linking Dhoni to the 2013 Indian Premier League (IPL) match-fixing and betting scandal.

On May 9, Justice A.A. Nakkiran dismissed News Nation’s review petition, in which the channel argued that its previous counsel had inadvertently consented to the interrogatories without prior consultation. Dhoni had previously criticized the channel’s written statement in the case as vague and lacking in specific responses, prompting his request to serve a set of 17 interrogatories.

While a single judge permitted similar interrogatories to be issued to Zee in 2022, another bench extended the same allowance to Dhoni for News Nation in July 2024 after the channel’s counsel raised no objections. News Nation later contended that its former legal representative acted without proper authorization, seeking to reverse the order.

Senior advocate P.R. Raman, representing Dhoni, argued that the review request was baseless as it did not identify any substantial legal error in the earlier ruling. He referenced the August 2023 dismissal of a similar petition by Zee, where a division bench upheld Dhoni’s right to deliver interrogatories.

Justice Nakkiran ruled that interrogatories could only be invalidated if they were found to be irrelevant, vexatious, or otherwise improper, none of which applied in this case. He added that the division bench’s prior endorsement of Dhoni’s right to use interrogatories confirmed their legitimacy. The judge further observed that the argument concerning the previous counsel’s lack of instructions was not a sufficient ground for a legal review.

“The applicant’s claim that submissions were made without instruction does not warrant reconsideration of the order,” the court stated, emphasizing that no error or irregularity was evident on the face of the record.

In related proceedings, the High Court earlier issued an interim injunction preventing Zee, Kumar, and others from making defamatory statements against Dhoni. In response, written submissions were filed by the defendants, during which Dhoni alleged that Sampath Kumar made further defamatory remarks. This led to a contempt of court petition, resulting in a 15-day imprisonment sentence for Kumar—a ruling that has since been stayed by the Supreme Court.

Israel Demands ICC Judges to Drop Arrest Warrant for Netanyahu

Israel has formally petitioned the International Criminal Court (ICC) to withdraw arrest warrants issued for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing ongoing legal challenges to the court’s jurisdiction over alleged war crimes committed during the Gaza conflict.

Documents dated May 9 and signed by Israeli Deputy Attorney General Gilad Noam—published on the ICC website—also reveal that Israel has asked the court to instruct the prosecution to suspend its investigation into alleged atrocities in the Palestinian Territories.

The ICC had initially issued warrants on November 21 against Netanyahu, his former defense chief, and Hamas military commander Ibrahim al-Masri (Mohammed Deif), for suspected war crimes and crimes against humanity. However, in February, the court revoked the warrant for al-Masri following credible reports of his death.

Israel continues to reject the ICC’s jurisdiction and denies any war crimes in Gaza. In April, the court’s appeals chamber ordered the pre-trial judges to reconsider Israel’s objections regarding the legitimacy of the arrest warrants and the ICC’s jurisdiction. The structure and timeline of this judicial review remain unclear, and no formal deadline has been established for rulings on Israel’s request.

Mark Zuckerberg Exploring Stablecoin Partnership to Drive Meta’s Crypto Integration: Report

Bitcoin is back in the spotlight as a flurry of major events ripples through the cryptocurrency landscape. Former U.S. President Donald Trump is hinting at a “truly earth-shattering” announcement, while his crypto advisor, David Sacks, has stirred markets with a bold prediction about Bitcoin’s trajectory. Adding to the excitement, a leaked report suggests that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is exploring a stablecoin partnership to integrate crypto into the company’s platforms.

According to Fortune, Meta is currently in talks with crypto firms to implement stablecoins as a method for managing payouts. While official details remain scarce, insiders suggest this could pave the way for digital transactions and blockchain-based features within Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

Bitcoin has soared past the $100,000 threshold, rising 30% from its April lows. The dramatic upswing has reignited bullish sentiment and fresh predictions that Bitcoin could rival or even surpass gold’s $20 trillion market capitalization, according to Forbes.

Why Meta May Be Returning to the Crypto Space

Meta’s renewed interest in crypto comes on the heels of its previous—and ultimately abandoned—attempt to launch a digital currency, formerly known as Libra and later Diem. Despite early ambitions to reshape global finance, the initiative was shelved in 2019 amid heavy regulatory resistance.

Now, with the staggering success of Tether’s USDT—reportedly bringing in $13 billion in profits last year—big players in tech and finance are entering the stablecoin space. Companies like PayPal and Bank of America are either developing or launching their own dollar-pegged tokens to tap into this fast-growing sector.

The surge in stablecoin activity reflects a broader transformation in how digital assets are viewed: not merely as speculative investments, but as essential components of a rapidly evolving financial ecosystem.

G7 Condemns Pahalgam Terror Attack, Voices Concern Over India-Pakistan Escalation: ‘We Stand in Support of…’

G7 on India-Pakistan

The G7 nations on Friday issued a strong condemnation of the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam and urged both India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint in the wake of escalating tensions.

In a joint statement, the foreign ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, along with the High Representative of the European Union, emphasized the urgent need for immediate de-escalation and called upon both nations to engage in direct dialogue to resolve the crisis through peaceful means.

“We, the G7 Foreign Ministers… strongly condemn the egregious terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22 and urge maximum restraint from both India and Pakistan,” the statement read.

The G7 warned that further military escalation could pose a significant threat to regional stability and expressed deep concern for the safety and well-being of civilians on both sides of the border. “We call for immediate de-escalation and encourage both countries to engage in direct dialogue towards a peaceful outcome. We continue to monitor events closely and express our support for a swift and lasting diplomatic resolution,” the statement added.

Tensions between the two South Asian neighbours have intensified following India’s precision strikes on May 7 targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The operation was carried out in response to the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which resulted in the death of 26 civilians, allegedly at the hands of Pakistan-linked terrorists.

In retaliation, Pakistan launched a fresh wave of drone strikes late Friday, targeting 26 locations across Indian territory from Jammu & Kashmir to Gujarat. The Indian Ministry of Defence reported that vital installations, including airbases and civilian airports, were among the intended targets. However, all such threats were successfully neutralized.

“The Indian armed forces remain on high alert. All aerial threats are being tracked and countered using advanced drone defence systems. The situation is under constant surveillance, and rapid response measures are in place,” the Indian Army stated.

These latest strikes followed an earlier wave on Thursday night, during which Pakistan deployed an estimated 300 to 400 Turkish-origin armed drones against 36 Indian sites. Notably, Pakistan allegedly used civilian airliners as cover to attack military installations, prompting India to retaliate by targeting and destroying four Pakistani air defence positions, including one radar installation.

India Thwarts Pakistani Assaults for Second Consecutive Night

India prepares for escalation.

India launched a counter-strike on Friday night following the interception of Pakistani drone attacks at 26 locations spanning Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. This marked the second consecutive day of escalating hostilities by Islamabad, intensifying concerns over the potential for a full-scale conflict.

An armed drone strike injured three civilians in Punjab’s Ferozepur town.

According to the Indian Army, drones were spotted across a wide stretch of territory — from Baramulla and Srinagar in the north to Bhuj in the west — covering both the international border and the Line of Control.

“The Indian armed forces are maintaining a high state of alert. All aerial threats are being closely monitored and neutralized using counter-drone systems. The situation is being observed vigilantly, and immediate action is taken wherever required,” the army said in a statement.

These strikes followed a major escalation the previous day, during which Pakistan launched 300 to 400 Turkish-made armed drones targeting 36 locations within India. Some of the attacks were allegedly carried out under the cover of civilian airliners, aimed at Indian military positions. In response, New Delhi struck four Pakistani air defence systems, successfully neutralizing one.

Friday night’s Indian response was described as both “appropriate and proportionate,” according to sources. Notably, several civilian flights were active in and around Lahore and Islamabad during Pakistan’s drone attacks, reinforcing India’s accusation that Pakistan used commercial air traffic as a shield in its military aggression.

An armed Pakistani drone targeted a civilian area in Punjab’s Ferozepur on Friday, severely injuring several members of a local family. According to army officials, the injured were promptly given medical attention, and the area has been secured and sanitized by security forces.

Officials reported that the drones included both armed and surveillance types, posing potential threats to both civilian and military targets across India’s western and northern frontiers. Citizens, especially those in border regions, have been urged to remain indoors, restrict movement, and adhere strictly to advisories issued by local authorities. While officials emphasized there is no cause for panic, they stressed the need for heightened vigilance.

Friday night’s barrage of drone activity marked the third consecutive wave of Pakistani aggression since India launched Operation Sindoor early Wednesday morning, targeting nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). India had earlier foiled Pakistani drone and missile attacks on 15 locations Wednesday night, followed by repelling assaults on 36 sites Thursday night. Each time, Indian forces retaliated swiftly, damaging or neutralizing Pakistani air defence systems.

The most recent flare-up represents the most serious military standoff between the two nuclear-armed neighbours in decades, raising the spectre of a full-blown conflict. Air raid sirens blared and blackouts were enforced across cities and rural settlements from Srinagar to Jodhpur, and from Bilaspur to Ambala — a mere 200 km from the national capital. Dramatic visuals showed defense systems engaging enemy drones with golden tracer rounds and flashing intercepts lighting up the night sky.

“We heard loud blasts near our locality… everyone is panicking,” said Farooq Ahmad, a Baramulla resident. In border villages of Rajasthan, authorities evacuated locals as a precautionary measure.

The Indian government confirmed that between 8:30 p.m. Thursday and 4:30 a.m. Friday, Pakistani drones violated Indian airspace in a sweeping arc from Leh and Jammu in the north to Sir Creek in Kutch in the west. Pakistan simultaneously opened heavy artillery fire and launched drone attacks on several forward posts along the Line of Control (LoC), resulting in casualties among Indian soldiers.

Colonel Sofiya Qureshi stated that the scale of the drone incursion was likely aimed at targeting military installations, probing India’s air defence readiness, and gathering intelligence. Initial forensic analysis of the downed drones identified them as Turkish-made Asisguard Songar models.

In retaliation, India’s counterstrike targeted four Pakistani air defence positions, reportedly disabling one radar installation. “Our armed forces employed both kinetic (hard-kill) and non-kinetic (soft-kill) techniques to neutralize incoming drones,” added Col. Qureshi.

This marked the third official briefing since the conflict began, delivered by Col. Qureshi, Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. The briefings underscored Pakistan’s alleged use of civilian airliners as shields for military attacks, as civilian flights continued to operate in the airspace near Lahore and Islamabad during drone launches.

“In contrast, India has suspended civilian air traffic in the region due to the elevated security threat,” Qureshi noted. She cited a specific example of a Flynas Airbus 320 flying from Dammam to Lahore during the strike window, highlighting India’s restraint in avoiding actions that could endanger international commercial flights.

The escalation follows a major terrorist attack on April 22 in Kashmir, where heavily armed militants killed 26 individuals — including 25 tourists, 24 of them Hindu — in the Baisaran grasslands near Pahalgam. The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, initially claimed responsibility. Indian agencies have since traced digital footprints linking the attack to Pakistani operatives.

Operation Sindoor, launched in the early hours of May 8 (between 1:04 a.m. and 1:30 a.m.), was India’s response. The strikes employed a mix of long-range cruise missiles like Scalp (launched from Rafale jets), Hammer smart munitions, guided bomb kits, M777 howitzers firing Excalibur shells, and loitering drones. Targets included facilities operated by UN-proscribed terror outfits such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed across the LoC and international border.

Later that day, Pakistan launched retaliatory attacks on 15 cities including Jammu, Srinagar, Pathankot, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Bathinda, Chandigarh, and Bhuj — cities that host major military assets. India responded by deploying its integrated air defence network comprising Akash surface-to-air missiles, anti-drone systems, and advanced radar and command systems. Kamikaze drones, including Israeli-made Harop models, were also used to strike Pakistani air defence infrastructure.

Col. Qureshi concluded that Pakistan’s refusal to close its airspace despite launching an unprovoked aerial assault was not only reckless but also endangered civil aviation in the region. In contrast, India’s measured and precise responses demonstrate its commitment to military restraint while maintaining defensive readiness.
