Ferrari Steps Into EV Space with ₹5.5 Crore Ferrari Luce

Ferrari has officially stepped into the electric era with the unveiling of the ‘Luce’, a move that marks one of the biggest transformations in the luxury carmaker’s history. Known for its thunderous engines, speed and exclusivity, the Italian brand’s decision to launch a fully electric model has triggered divided reactions across the automobile world, especially among long time Ferrari enthusiasts.

The debut of the Ferrari Luce signals a dramatic shift for the Maranello based manufacturer, which for decades built its identity around the emotion and sound of combustion engines. Now, with stricter emission regulations, evolving buyer preferences and the global push towards electrification reshaping the industry, Ferrari has entered the EV space with what it describes as a completely new interpretation of the brand.

Ferrari chairman John Elkann presented the vehicle to Pope Leo XIV at Castel Gandolfo soon after its official reveal. The company says the Luce, which translates to “light” in Italian, is not simply another addition to its lineup, but the beginning of an entirely new chapter.

“We are not simply unveiling a new car, we are inaugurating a chapter that turns our vision into reality,” Elkann said during the presentation.

What makes the Ferrari Luce different?

Unlike Ferrari’s iconic two seater supercars, the Luce arrives as a four door, five seat electric grand tourer. Even Pope Leo XIV reportedly pointed out the unusual format during the unveiling, asking whether it was Ferrari’s first four door model, to which Elkann replied that it was also the company’s first five seater.

Despite losing the traditional Ferrari engine note, the performance figures remain extreme.

Ferrari Luce specifications

0 to 100 kmph in 2.5 seconds

0 to 200 kmph in 6.8 seconds

Top speed of 310 kmph

Four electric motors, one powering each wheel

Maximum power output of 772 kW

Maximum torque at the motors: 990 Nm

Wheel torque reaching 11,150 Nm

Battery capacity of 122 kWh

Driving range exceeding 530 kilometres

Estimated starting price near €500,000, roughly ₹5.5 crore

Ferrari says the Luce has been entirely designed, engineered and built in Maranello, maintaining what it calls a “100 percent Ferrari” experience despite the absence of a combustion engine.

Inside Ferrari’s futuristic EV cabin

The Luce introduces a radically minimalist interior inspired by futuristic ergonomics and developed in collaboration with designers Jony Ive and Marc Newson through the LoveFrom collective.

Ferrari says the cabin focuses on simplicity, clarity and driver engagement. Traditional tactile switches sit alongside multifunctional digital displays, while the steering wheel has been machined from a single block of aluminium.

The wheel also integrates Ferrari’s signature Manettino controls alongside a new E Manettino system, which handles battery management, energy optimisation and driving modes.

A movable digital panel allows both the driver and front passenger to interact with vehicle controls and information systems.

Ferrari has also focused heavily on aerodynamics and cooling, two critical challenges in high performance EVs. The Luce features active airflow grilles, a suspended front wing and advanced thermal systems designed to maximise efficiency while preserving the sleek proportions associated with Ferrari models.

Why the Luce launch matters

The arrival of Ferrari’s first EV comes at a complicated time for the global electric vehicle industry. Governments continue pushing electrification, but consumer demand has slowed in several markets due to charging infrastructure concerns, pricing issues and increased competition from lower cost Chinese manufacturers.

Ferrari itself recently lowered its target for electric vehicles in its future lineup by 2030. Even so, the company’s entry into the EV space is viewed as historic because Ferrari has long represented the emotional and visceral side of performance driving, something critics argue electric cars struggle to recreate.

Reactions remain sharply divided

The Luce has generated intense debate online and within the automotive industry. While some praised Ferrari for embracing the future without compromising on performance, others questioned whether the car still feels like a Ferrari at all.

The unveiling also affected investor sentiment, with Ferrari shares falling sharply in Milan and the United States shortly after the reveal.

Among the loudest critics was former Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo, who reportedly criticised the design and questioned whether the vehicle truly belonged under the Ferrari badge.

Automotive journalists have also noted that the higher floor required for EV batteries changes the proportions of the car, making it appear taller and less sleek than traditional Ferraris.

Matt Prior from Autocar said the interior was impressive, but added that the car does not instantly project a Ferrari identity from the outside.

Industry analysts have also questioned whether an ultra expensive electric Ferrari fits the current direction of the EV market, where many manufacturers are prioritising affordability and mass adoption rather than exclusivity.

Still, regardless of the divided reactions, the Luce represents a defining moment for Ferrari as the company attempts to carry one of the world’s most recognisable automotive brands into an electric future.
