PM Modi Inaugurates Kalachakra Empowerment Ceremony with Bhutan’s Royal Family

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the ‘Kalachakra Empowerment’ ceremony Wednesday alongside Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and former King Jigme Singye Wangchuck at the ongoing Global Peace Prayer Festival.

Ceremony Significance

“Had the honour of inaugurating Kalachakra ‘Wheel of Time’ Empowerment with His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the King of Bhutan and His Majesty The Fourth Druk Gyalpo,” PM Modi stated on social media.

“It was presided over by His Holiness the Je Khenpo which made it even more special. This is an important ritual with great cultural significance for Buddhists around the world. The Kalachakra Empowerment is a part of the ongoing Global Peace Prayer Festival which has brought together devotees and scholars of Buddhism to Bhutan,” he added.

Meeting with Former King

Earlier Wednesday, Modi met with former King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, expressing appreciation for his efforts strengthening India-Bhutan relations. “Had a wonderful meeting with His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo. Appreciated his extensive efforts over the years towards further cementing India-Bhutan ties,” Modi posted.

During the meeting, they discussed cooperation in energy, trade, technology, and connectivity. “Lauded the progress in the Gelephu Mindfulness City Project, which aligns with our Act East Policy,” Modi stated.

The Prime Minister thanked “His Majesty for his wise counsel and guidance in further enhancing the special India-Bhutan friendship,” according to the Ministry of External Affairs. Modi conveyed best wishes from India’s government and people for the former king’s continued good health, well-being, and long life, the ministry added.

PM Modi’s Two-Day Visit

PM Modi, on a two-day visit to the Himalayan country, addressed an event Tuesday at Changlimethang Stadium marking the 70th birth anniversary of Bhutan’s fourth ‘Druk Gyalpo’ Jigme Singye Wangchuck.

The Prime Minister stated India and Bhutan have shared deep spiritual and cultural bonds for centuries, emphasizing his commitment to participate in this “important occasion.”

Bilateral Relations

The visit underscores close India-Bhutan ties, with discussions focusing on expanding cooperation across multiple sectors. The Gelephu Mindfulness City Project represents a significant development initiative aligning with India’s regional connectivity priorities.

The Kalachakra ceremony’s inclusion in Modi’s itinerary highlights the spiritual and cultural dimensions of India-Bhutan relations, extending beyond traditional diplomatic and economic cooperation.
