PM Modi to Launch 98,000 New 4G Towers, Network Platforms for Digital India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to unveil two major telecommunications initiatives today that aim to transform India’s digital infrastructure and establish the country as a global telecom manufacturing hub, Communications and North Eastern Region Development Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced.

PM Modi to launch 4G towers in India

The first initiative involves the rollout of nearly 98,000 new 4G mobile towers across India, ensuring comprehensive network coverage nationwide. Scindia emphasized the scope of this expansion, stating that “no part of India will be left untouched” by the new infrastructure.

The second milestone is the launch of India’s Swadeshi 4G network, described as a fully indigenous, software-driven, cloud-based technology platform designed for seamless upgradability to 5G networks.

Immediate Impact and Coverage

According to Scindia, the new towers are already serving 22 million customers nationwide, addressing longstanding gaps in digital connectivity. He outlined the transformative potential across various sectors: “Students in Bihar will gain seamless access to online education, farmers in Punjab will get real-time mandi price updates, soldiers in Kashmir will remain connected with their families, and entrepreneurs in the North East will tap into global expertise and funding.”

Indigenous Technology Stack

The rollout represents a significant advancement in India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision. BSNL has deployed a completely indigenous 4G technology infrastructure, comprising a Radio Access Network developed by Tejas Networks, a core network created by C-DOT, and integration services provided by TCS.

Scindia announced the launch of India’s 100% 4G saturation network under the Digital Bharat Nidhi initiative, connecting nearly 29,000 villages. The timing coincides with BSNL’s silver jubilee, marking 25 years of service to the nation.

Strategic Positioning

Industry experts suggest this development positions India among the world’s leading telecom equipment manufacturers, representing a significant shift from previous capabilities. The achievement reflects what officials describe as remarkable progress in just four years, highlighting the government’s commitment to digital self-reliance and inclusion.

Scindia characterized the initiatives as delivering dual benefits: providing world-class telecommunications services to India’s 1.2 billion population while establishing the country as a manufacturing hub. He described this as redefining India’s role in driving global digital growth, reflecting the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (“the world is one family”).

National Significance

The launch is being positioned as a milestone of national importance, representing both technological breakthrough and the realization of India’s vision for digital empowerment. The initiatives demonstrate the government’s strategy of combining domestic capability building with comprehensive service delivery.

PM Modi’s dedication of these achievements to the nation marks a significant moment in India’s telecommunications evolution, potentially reshaping the country’s position in global digital infrastructure and manufacturing sectors.
