iPhone 17 in India: More Affordable, Still Requires Over 900 Hours of Work

Apple’s iPhone 17 launch has sparked discussions in India not about technical specifications, but about economic accessibility. While local manufacturing has reduced prices, the device remains financially challenging for average Indian earners.

The base iPhone 17 model costs just under $1,000 in India, considerably less than in Brazil ($1,484) or Turkey ($1,885). However, when measured against local wages, the true affordability picture emerges starkly different.

Will iPhone 17 be cheaper in India?

Data from a Statista report based on International Labour Organisation findings reveals that average gross hourly wages in India range from approximately $1 to $1.60. Consequently, an average Indian worker must work between 625 to 1,000 hours to afford the base iPhone 17—equivalent to 16 to 25 weeks of full-time employment without any other expenditures.

This contrasts dramatically with the United States, where the same device costs around $857 after tax, requiring just 21 hours of average-wage work. European countries like Portugal and Hungary, despite higher costs of living, require significantly fewer work hours due to superior wage levels.

What does the survey says?

According to comparative data, Indian workers need 967 hours to afford an iPhone 17, making it one of the least accessible markets globally. Vietnam follows closely at 598 hours, while Turkey requires 461 hours and Brazil 409 hours. Mexico, at 352 hours, demonstrates relatively better affordability within emerging markets.

Switzerland and the United States offer the most favorable iPhone affordability ratios in terms of required work hours, while Brazil, Turkey, India, and Vietnam rank among the most challenging markets for average workers.

Apple iPhone in Indian Market

India has witnessed iPhone price reductions in recent years, primarily due to Apple’s expanded local manufacturing operations that have decreased import duties. However, the wage disparity continues positioning the device as a luxury item for typical citizens.

The situation mirrors Vietnam’s market, where modest global pricing remains prohibitively expensive relative to local earnings capacity.

As Apple emphasizes iPhone 17’s enhanced camera capabilities and improved durability, the fundamental question persists for Indian consumers: how many working hours justify owning this premium device? The economic reality suggests that for most Indian workers, the iPhone 17 remains a significant financial commitment requiring months of dedicated saving.
