Android vs iPhone: Google Claims Its Phones Are Better at Blocking Scams

Google has asserted that its Android operating system now outperforms Apple’s iOS in protecting users from mobile scams. The company revealed the findings in a detailed report supported by independent research and large-scale user surveys, highlighting how its AI-driven security tools are reshaping smartphone safety.

In its latest blog post, Google said that Android’s AI safeguards are designed to combat a global scam crisis that costs consumers an estimated $400 billion every year. The company claimed that Android devices collectively block over 10 billion spam calls and fraudulent messages each month.

According to Google, the study conducted with YouGov, which surveyed 5,000 smartphone users, found that Android users—particularly those using Pixel phones—encounter far fewer scam attempts than iPhone owners.

Survey highlights a major difference

The YouGov survey revealed that Android users were 58% more likely than iPhone users to have received no scam texts during the past week. For Pixel users, the gap widened further, with data showing they were 96% more likely to have avoided scam messages altogether.

By contrast, iOS users were 65% more likely to report receiving three or more scam messages in a single week. In addition, 150% more iPhone owners said they felt their devices were not effective at preventing mobile fraud.

Independent research supports Google’s position

Google cited additional findings from Counterpoint Research and Leviathan Security Group to bolster its claims. Counterpoint noted that Android has AI-backed defenses in nine key security areas, while iOS features similar protections in only two. Leviathan’s analysis concluded that Android—especially Google’s Pixel lineup—provides stronger default security against scams even without extra apps or manual configuration.

A challenge to Apple’s security image

This comparison also represents a subtle challenge to Apple’s long-standing reputation for superior privacy and safety. Google’s report positions Android as a platform that uses deeper AI integration to identify and block emerging scam tactics before they reach users.

While Apple has introduced new safeguards such as “Silence Unknown Callers,” Google maintains that its layered AI system gives Android a decisive edge in staying ahead of modern fraud attempts.
