T20 World Cup 2026: Ahmedabad to Host Final, Mumbai Gets Semifinal Venue

T20 World Cup 2026: India will defend its T20 World Cup title when the 2026 tournament kicks off, with the country co-hosting the event alongside Sri Lanka. According to an Indian Express report, Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium has been designated to host both the opening match and the final of the competition.

India captured the T20 World Cup title with a seven-run victory over South Africa in Bridgetown, Barbados, last year. However, the team has undergone significant changes since that triumph, with veterans Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja retiring from T20 international cricket, making way for younger players.

Venue Distribution and Special Arrangements

The report indicates that Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium will host one of the semifinals. Additionally, Delhi, Chennai, and Kolkata are expected to be the other Indian venues selected for the tournament.

A notable provision has been made regarding Pakistan’s participation. If Pakistan reaches the semifinals, their match will be conducted in Colombo, regardless of whether they face India. Similarly, if Pakistan advances to the final, the championship match will also take place in Sri Lanka.

These arrangements stem from an agreement between the ICC, BCCI, and PCB stipulating that India and Pakistan will play all their matches at neutral venues through 2027.

T20 World Cup 2026 Venue Capacity

The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad previously hosted the 2023 ODI World Cup final between India and Australia. It is the world’s largest cricket stadium, with a capacity exceeding 100,000 spectators. That World Cup edition utilized 10 venues total.

Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium has been excluded from the venue list after the Karnataka State Cricket Association failed to obtain necessary clearances following a stampede during RCB’s IPL victory celebrations in June. The incident resulted in 11 fatalities, and the venue has not hosted international matches since.

According to a PTI report, three Sri Lankan venues, including Colombo, will host matches during the tournament.
