Barcelona’s teenage football prodigy, Lamine Yamal, has inked a major contract extension that will keep him at the club until 2031, marking the first significant deal of his professional career.
The club officially announced the extension on Tuesday, confirming that the 17-year-old winger signed the contract at Barcelona’s headquarters. Present at the signing were club president Joan Laporta, first vice president Rafa Yuste, and sporting director Anderson Luis de Souza “Deco,” among others.
According to Spanish media, securing Yamal’s future was one of Barcelona’s top priorities this summer. The player himself was eager to finalize the deal early, aiming to enjoy some rest following his UEFA Nations League commitments with Spain in June.
Record-Breaking Deal
Local reports suggest that Yamal’s new contract could make him Barcelona’s highest-paid player, contingent on meeting various performance-related incentives.
As per Goal.com, the agreement includes a base salary of €15 million (£12.5m/$17m) per season, with potential bonuses increasing the total to €20 million (£17m/$23m) annually—equivalent to around £325,000 per week. Interestingly, Barcelona has chosen not to disclose his current release clause, a departure from his previous clause, which was set at an astonishing $1.08 billion.
Yamal’s previous deal was set to expire in 2026. Over the past season, he emerged as a critical figure in Barcelona’s success, contributing 18 goals and 25 assists across 55 appearances, helping the team secure both LaLiga and the Copa del Rey titles.
Already regarded as one of the top talents in world football, Yamal has made 106 first-team appearances—an extraordinary achievement for someone his age. He holds records as the youngest goalscorer in La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Supercopa, and is also the youngest player ever to reach 100 appearances for Barcelona.
Following a standout season filled with dazzling performances, Yamal is now considered a strong contender for this year’s Ballon d’Or.
