Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai announced on Wednesday that the capital region is exploring the possibility of implementing artificial rain between November 1 and 15 to mitigate the severe air pollution that typically peaks during this time.
Delhi preps artificial rain in November
The minister unveiled a 21-point action plan to address the city’s air pollution woes during the winter months. He stated that a letter has been sent to the Union Environment Minister seeking permission for the artificial rain initiative, which aims to counter the effects of Diwali celebrations and stubble burning.
“We have written a letter to the Union Environment Minister asking permission to implement artificial rain during winter. We want to prepare for artificial rains between November 1 to November 15, when the pollution levels are expected to peak due to the aftermath of Diwali celebrations and stubble burning,” he said, adding that the minister has yet to respond to the letter.
Rai highlighted the significant progress made in reducing air pollution in Delhi, noting a 34.6% decrease between 2016 and 2023. He attributed this improvement, in part, to the planting of two crore trees in the city over the past four years.
Drone deployment in areas
To enhance pollution monitoring efforts, the minister announced the deployment of drones for real-time surveillance of hotspot regions. Additionally, a Special Task Force comprising members from various government departments will be established to oversee pollution levels in the capital.
To address dust pollution, an anti-dust campaign will be launched on October 7. The city will also deploy 85 machine sweepers for road cleaning and 200 mobile anti-smog guns in each assembly constituency.
To curb vehicular pollution, 360 teams will be formed to inspect vehicle pollution certificates. Furthermore, a Green War Room will be set up to coordinate efforts to tackle air pollution.
Finally, the minister confirmed that a cracker ban will be enforced in Delhi once the necessary gazette notification is issued.
