In an emotionally charged farewell ceremony at the Supreme Court on Friday, Chief Justice of India-designate Sanjiv Khanna paid tribute to outgoing Chief Justice (CJI) DY Chandrachud with powerful metaphors that captured the moment’s significance.
Justices Khanna buds farewell to CJI Chandrachud
“When a towering tree of justice steps back, the winds move differently,” Justice Khanna remarked, adding poignantly, “The forest will never be quite the same again.” He further reflected on the impending transition: “From Monday, we will feel the change deeply; an emptiness will resonate through the sandstone pillars of this court, a quiet echo within the hearts of the members of the bar and bench alike.”
At the event organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Justice Khanna highlighted CJI Chandrachud’s remarkable legacy of 38 constitutional bench judgments, including two delivered on his final day – “a record that will remain unbroken.” He praised the outgoing CJI’s scholarly approach and composure both in and out of court.
Here’s what others said on Chandrachud’s farewell:
Attorney General R Venkatramani focused on Chandrachud’s humanitarian contributions to the judiciary, noting initiatives such as work-from-home arrangements for female clerks and crèche facilities, demonstrating his understanding of workforce needs.
SCBA President Kapil Sibal offered a candid appreciation of CJI Chandrachud’s leadership style. “We may not agree with you; it’s not necessary to agree, but we must salute you for being willing to hear those issues,” Sibal stated, acknowledging the Chief Justice’s courage in addressing challenging matters. He added meaningfully, “You will be remembered for what you have done and what you have not done.”
