Hardik Pandya Ruled Out of India’s Match Against New Zealand in ICC World Cup 2023

Hardik Pandya Ruled Out

Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya will miss the upcoming match against New Zealand in the ICC Men’s World Cup 2023 due to an ankle injury he sustained during a game against Bangladesh. Lok Sabha member Shashi Tharoor has suggested that the Indian selectors replace Pandya with Mohammad Shami and introduce Suryakumar Yadav to the squad. This injury presents a challenge as Pandya is a genuine all-rounder, and his spot must be filled strategically.

Hardik Pandya’s Injury and Recovery

During the match against Bangladesh, Hardik Pandya twisted his left ankle while attempting to stop a shot with his foot during the first over of Bangladesh’s innings. It was held at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. As a result, he was unable to continue playing, and he underwent scans for the injury.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Pandya will not travel with the team to Dharamsala for the New Zealand match. Instead, he will rest and receive medical supervision from the BCCI medical team, rejoining the team in Lucknow for the match against England.

While the injury isn’t reported to be severe, the team will assess Pandya’s condition daily to determine when he can return to play. Skipper Rohit Sharma expressed relief that there is no major damage, emphasizing the need for ongoing evaluation and care for this type of injury.

Shashi Tharoor’s Suggestions

Shashi Tharoor, a member of the Lok Sabha and a cricket enthusiast, recommended two key changes to the squad due to Pandya’s absence. Tharoor suggested that Mohammad Shami should replace Shardul Thakur, and Suryakumar Yadav should fill Hardik Pandya’s spot.

He outlined his suggestions on X, stating that these changes would ensure that both the batting and bowling aspects are well-covered. In the absence of a genuine all-rounder in the squad, this strategic approach becomes crucial.

India’s Performance and Upcoming Matches

India has enjoyed an undefeated run in the World Cup, winning all four of its matches so far. The team currently holds the second position on the points table, with New Zealand leading in terms of net run rate.
