Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the ceremony and later congratulated the new Vice President through social media platform X. “Attended the oath-taking ceremony of Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji. A dedicated public servant, he has devoted his life to nation-building, social service, and strengthening democratic values. Wishing him a successful Vice Presidential tenure, dedicated to the service of the people,” the prime minister posted.

Former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar was also present to witness the leadership transition.

About CP Radhakrishnan’s political career

CPRadhakrishnan’s path to the Vice Presidency was secured through a decisive electoral victory, where he garnered 452 first-preference votes against opposition-backed candidate B. Sudershan Reddy’s 300 votes. His election was widely regarded as a unifying choice, attributed to his measured political approach and non-confrontational leadership style.

Before assuming the Vice Presidency, Radhakrishnan served as Governor of Maharashtra, a position he relinquished following his election. His extensive political background includes long-standing associations with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and BJP, coupled with a reputation for consensus-building and maintaining a clean public image.

Born in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan’s political journey began during his student years. He successfully contested and won two Lok Sabha elections from Coimbatore constituency. His administrative experience spans multiple gubernatorial roles, having served as Governor of Jharkhand, Telangana, and Maharashtra, as well as Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.

With his oath as Vice President, CP Radhakrishnan automatically assumes the position of Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, India’s Upper House of Parliament, where he will play a crucial role in legislative proceedings and maintaining parliamentary decorum.

His appointment represents continuity in India’s constitutional framework while bringing his decades of public service experience to the nation’s second-highest constitutional office.
