Bihar Government Proposes Free 100-Unit Electricity Scheme Ahead of Upcoming Elections

As Bihar prepares for its upcoming Assembly elections later this year, the Nitish Kumar-led government has intensified efforts to introduce welfare initiatives aimed at the electorate. Following a recent hike in pension benefits, the administration has now set its sights on easing electricity costs for households.

On Saturday, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced a plan to offer up to 100 units of free electricity per household across the state. The move, positioned as a major relief measure, is widely seen as a strategic initiative in the run-up to the elections.

According to official sources, the Energy Department’s proposal has received a green signal from the Finance Department. The plan is now expected to be tabled in an upcoming cabinet meeting for formal approval.

If implemented, the scheme will offer monthly savings to a vast section of Bihar’s population, particularly low- and middle-income families. The initiative is projected to help reduce the financial strain caused by rising living expenses, providing some cushion against inflation.

Government insiders suggest that this measure could positively impact millions of residents by cutting household electricity bills and boosting disposable income. The final decision is likely to be announced soon, pending cabinet endorsement.

While political observers see this as a carefully timed electoral promise, supporters of the scheme argue that it reflects the government’s commitment to easing everyday burdens for ordinary citizens in the state.
