At least 73 mobile phones collectively valued at Rs 23.85 lakh were stolen during pop singer Enrique Iglesias’ concert in Mumbai on Wednesday evening, police confirmed on Friday.
Multiple FIRs Registered
Mumbai Police have registered seven First Information Reports (FIRs) concerning the thefts that occurred at the MMRDA ground in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The complainants include diverse professionals such as a makeup artist, hotelier, students, a journalist, and businessmen.
The concert, which featured minimum ticket prices of Rs 7,000, attracted a large audience to witness the Grammy Award-winning artist’s debut Mumbai performance.
Concert Details
The 50-year-old global music sensation, Enrique Iglesias performed for approximately 90 minutes before over 25,000 fans at the commercial hub venue. Iglesias delivered classic hits including ‘Hero’ and ‘Bailamos’, creating what attendees described as a nostalgic experience.
Investigation Underway
Police are investigating the organized nature of the thefts, which occurred during the crowded event. The substantial number of stolen devices and their collective value suggest coordinated criminal activity targeting concert attendees.
Authorities have not yet announced any arrests in connection with the thefts. The investigation continues as police review security footage and gather statements from victims and witnesses.
Security Concerns
The incident raises questions about security measures at large-scale entertainment events in Mumbai. With ticket prices starting at Rs 7,000 and attendance exceeding 25,000, the concert represented a high-profile gathering that may have attracted organized theft operations.
The stolen phones’ combined value of Rs 23.85 lakh indicates victims were carrying premium devices, likely used to capture videos and photographs during the performance.
Enrique Iglesias Concert Success Despite Thefts
Despite the theft incidents, the concert itself was deemed successful from an entertainment perspective. Enrique Iglesias’ 90-minute performance marked his first appearance in Mumbai, delivering popular songs that resonated with the large audience.
The thefts underscore ongoing challenges event organizers face in balancing accessibility for large crowds while maintaining adequate security to prevent criminal activity. Police continue investigating to identify suspects and recover stolen property, though no timeline for resolution has been provided.
