Pakistan Situation Tense as Imran Khan’s PTI Defies Rally Ban

Tensions rose in Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital, on Thursday, August 22, as the party of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan vowed to proceed with its planned rally despite government opposition. On Wednesday, Islamabad Chief Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa revoked the NOC (No Objection Certificate) granted to the party, citing security concerns.

“The agencies highlighted the past conduct and track record of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), indicating that a serious law and order situation could arise,” reported news agency PTI, referencing the official order.

Earlier, on July 31, the deputy commissioner had issued the NOC allowing Imran Khan’s PTI to hold the rally. However, the order was withdrawn due to the current tense situation, with authorities deeming it unsafe to proceed. Despite the government’s refusal, PTI’s insistence on holding a power show has heightened widespread apprehension. According to Omar Ayub Khan, the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, a “peaceful” rally is set to take place today in the Tarnol area at around 4:00 pm.

The rally will be led by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, who stated, “I am sending a clear message that the people of KP must arrive by 3 pm… We will hold the rally regardless. This will be PTI’s first rally in the city since the February 8 general elections.”

In response to fears of potential violence, Islamabad authorities ordered the closure of all private and government schools within the federal region’s jurisdiction.

Following months of political turmoil involving cases against its leader and other members, PTI decided to move forward with its rally plans after the government abruptly revoked its NOC.

Simultaneously, the Punjab Home Department imposed Section 144 across the province, citing the “prevailing law and order situation and security threats.” This order, effective from Thursday to Saturday, bans gatherings, sit-ins, rallies, demonstrations, protests, and similar activities across the state.

The Home Department’s notice further stated, “The ban has been implemented due to the threat of terrorism and to protect human lives and property. Authorities throughout Punjab will ensure strict enforcement of this directive.”
