Actor Pankaj Dheer, renowned for his portrayal of warrior Karna in BR Chopra’s iconic television series ‘Mahabharat’, passed away on Wednesday after a prolonged battle with cancer. He was 71.

Amit Behl, Dheer’s longtime friend, colleague, and CINTAA member, confirmed the news to India Today. According to sources, Dheer had been fighting cancer for some time. Though he initially overcame the disease, it relapsed several months ago, leaving him critically ill. He had undergone major surgery related to his condition.
Official Statement
The Cine & TV Artistes’ Association released a statement: “With profound grief and deep sorrow, we inform you of the passing of our Trust’s erstwhile Chairman and CINTAA’s former Hon. General Secretary, Shri Pankaj Dheer ji, on 15th October 2025.
The cremation will be held today at 4:30 pm, next to Pawan Hans, Vile Parle (W), Mumbai.”
Beyond ‘Mahabharat’, Dheer acted in films including ‘Sanam Bewafa’ and ‘Baadshah’, and television shows like ‘Chandrakanta’ and ‘Sasural Simar Ka’. He also worked as a director, helming ‘My Father Godfather’, and founded the Abhinay Acting Academy.
Karna’s Enduring Legacy
In an earlier interview with India Forums, Dheer reflected on his character’s popularity: “People have loved me and adored me over the years. Even in the history books of schools, if they have a reference to Karna, they have my picture there. So, as long as these books are printed in school, I will always be their reference as Karna.”
He revealed an extraordinary aspect of his cultural impact: “I also have two temples where there is Puja done every day. I am worshipped there in Karna Mandir. I have been to those temples. One is in Karnal and one is in Bastar. There is an eight-feet-tall statue of mine, and people come there and worship it. When I go there, people love me from the bottom of their hearts.”
Family
Dheer is survived by his wife Anita Dheer and son, actor Nikitin Dheer, who has appeared in films like ‘Chennai Express’ and ‘Dabangg 2’.
His portrayal of Karna remains one of Indian television’s most memorable performances, cementing his place in popular culture history.
