Disney Hotstar & Star Sports: Reliance Industries Ltd, led by Mukesh Ambani, is poised to secure a significant multi-billion-dollar deal with Walt Disney Co. to acquire Disney’s Indian operations. The acquisition encompasses Disney’s popular streaming service Hotstar and the sports broadcasting network Star Sports. This monumental deal will position Reliance Jio as the new home for these prominent entertainment assets.
Reliance’s Control in the Disney Star Business
Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) will hold a controlling stake in Disney Star’s Indian operations. It is estimated to be valued at around $10 billion. Disney, the U.S. entertainment giant, will retain a minority stake in the venture. The exact figures are yet to be known and final. Insiders suggest that Reliance sees the acquisition’s value ranging from $7 billion to $8 billion.
Announcement Expected Next Month
The announcement of this acquisition is supposed to occur next month. As part of the deal, some of Reliance’s media units will merge with Disney Star. It will lead to a strategic reshuffling in the media and entertainment industry.

Unresolved Deal Terms
Although discussions between the parties are ongoing. Certain aspects of the deal, such as the precise valuation of the stake transfer, have not been officially agreed. Disney is expected to maintain a minority stake in the Indian entity. The option for Disney to retain assets for a more extended period is also under consideration.
Notably, Disney’s representative in India has refrained from commenting on the situation, while Reliance’s spokesperson has chosen not to provide any comments.
Ambani’s Expanding Influence in the Entertainment Industry
Mukesh Ambani has been strategically expanding his presence in India’s entertainment industry. In 2022, his company, Reliance Industries, secured a lucrative deal worth $2.7 billion to stream the Indian Premier League (IPL), a cricketing extravaganza followed passionately by millions of fans.
