Cloudburst Triggers Flash Floods in Sikkim

Sikkim, a northeastern state in India, faced severe disruptions in connectivity, including the capital city of Gangtok, due to flash floods caused by a cloudburst. The overflowing Teesta river washed away sections of NH-10, the vital road link connecting Sikkim to the rest of the country.

As the flash floods wreaked havoc, 23 Army personnel were reported missing. A massive search operation has been launched to locate them and ensure their safety.

Teesta River’s Alarming Rise

Videos captured by locals depicted the devastation caused by the flash floods, including a substantial portion of a road being swept away by the surging Teesta river. The Central Water Commission reported that Teesta’s water levels were below the warning level at 6 a.m. but were expected to exceed it within six hours.

Destruction and Evacuations

The flash floods resulted in the inundation of the Indreni Bridge in Singtam town, situated approximately 30 kilometers from Gangtok. Additionally, a connecting bridge in the Balutar hamlet was washed away around 4 a.m. in the same area. Many homes near the river basin in Singtam have been evacuated, and residents have been relocated to temporary relief camps.

Ongoing Rescue Efforts

Residents of Chungthang town, located about 90 kilometers north of Gangtok near the Teesta Dam, have also been rescued. Furthermore, two bridges in Dikchu and Toong towns, connecting Singtam to Chungthang in North Sikkim, sustained damage. The Border Road Organisation (BRO) has been actively involved in rescuing locals affected by the floods.

Residents were urged to remain vigilant and prepared.

Chief Minister’s Response

Deadly Dengue Outbreak Claims Over 1,000 Lives in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is currently grappling with its most severe recorded outbreak of dengue fever, a mosquito-borne disease. This year, the outbreak has tragically resulted in the loss of over 1,000 lives in the country, making it the deadliest outbreak on record. Climate change is exacerbating the situation, with irregular rainfall and rising temperatures creating ideal conditions for the disease-transmitting mosquitoes.

Dengue: A Tropical Menace

It is a disease typically found in tropical regions, causing a range of symptoms including high fevers, severe headaches, nausea, vomiting, muscle pain, and, in severe cases, life-threatening bleeding.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued warnings about the accelerated spread of dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases, including chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika, due to the influence of climate change.

Check Out: Fresh Chapati Dough: 4 Tips to keep them fresh

Alarming Statistics

The Directorate General of Health Services in Bangladesh has reported that more than 1,000 people have lost their lives to dengue this year, with over 200,000 confirmed cases. This grim figure surpasses the total deaths recorded in all previous years combined since 2000, underscoring the enormity of the health crisis. Tragically, among the victims are 112 children aged 15 and under, including infants.

Climate Change’s Role

Scientists attribute the severity of this year’s outbreak to irregular patterns of rainfall and higher temperatures during the monsoon season, which have created ideal breeding conditions for the disease-carrying Aedes mosquitoes. These mosquitoes thrive in specific temperature ranges that facilitate the multiplication of the virus. Global climate change plays a significant role in providing these favorable temperature conditions.

Challenges in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has been contending with the disease since the 1960s, witnessing its first outbreak of dengue hemorrhagic fever in 2000. Dengue has now become endemic in the country, with increasingly severe outbreaks observed since the early 2000s. While most cases occur during the monsoon season from July to September, when the country receives the bulk of its annual rainfall, hospitals have been admitting dengue patients even during the winter months in recent years. Many of these patients are experiencing their second or third dengue infections, which come with a higher risk of complications. Healthcare professionals face significant challenges in treating these cases, particularly when patients seek medical attention late in the course of their illness.

Wrap Up

Hospitals in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, are overwhelmed with dengue patients, many of whom are battling their second or third bout of the disease. These patients lie under mosquito nets, closely watched by concerned family members. Repeat dengue infections tend to be more severe, leading to a higher number of fatalities.

The ongoing outbreak in Bangladesh, compounded by the effects of climate change, has had a devastating impact on the population, claiming over 1,000 lives. It serves as a stark reminder of the pressing need to address the consequences of climate change on public health, particularly in the context of mosquito-borne diseases like dengue.

Noah Describes Bengaluru Show Experience

Trevor Noah, the renowned comedian, shared details of his Bengaluru show cancellation during a performance in Mumbai. He humorously described the Manpho Convention Centre in Bengaluru, where the show was scheduled, as a “semi-permanent tent” and narrated how dogs in cages were barking along the path leading to the venue. He also highlighted the poor seating arrangements and malfunctioning air-conditioning units, which resulted in bad sound quality and an unsatisfactory experience for the audience.

Comical Take on Bengaluru Traffic

Noah, in his signature comedic style, discussed the challenges he faced while navigating Bengaluru’s notorious traffic to reach the venue. Video clips from his Mumbai performance showed him joking about his Bengaluru experience. Despite the cancellation, Noah expressed his intention to return to India and specifically mentioned Bangalore.

“Usually what happens is, there’s an entrance…through which you emerge into the backstage area before you come up and perform. Here we walked through an alley that was full of dogs, half of which were in cages,” Noah amusingly remarked.

In response to the clips and Noah’s experiences, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, the founder-chairperson of Indian drugmaker Biocon Ltd., expressed her views on social media. She referred to Bangalore’s infrastructure as “shambolic” and suggested that the city had provided enough content for Trevor Noah’s future shows. She tagged several administrative bodies and leaders, urging them to address the issues faced by the city.

Google’s Search Dominance Called into Question

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella testified as a witness for the US Justice Department. It was in a high-stakes antitrust trial against Google’s parent company, Alphabet. The trial revolves around allegations that Google’s near-monopoly in search has stifled competition and innovation. It ultimately harms consumers.

The government’s argument centers on Google’s alleged $10 billion annual payments to smartphone manufacturers. It includes Apple, and wireless carriers, such as AT&T, to secure its position as the default search engine on their devices.

Satya Nadella’s Testimony

In his testimony, Nadella highlighted the insurmountable challenge Microsoft faced in competing against Google’s search engine dominance. He stressed that Google’s grip on the market is so powerful that it essentially quashed competition. Nadella emphasized that Google’s unfair tactics played a pivotal role in cementing its status as a search engine giant, effectively sidelining Microsoft’s rival program, Bing.

Nadella revealed a startling offer made by Microsoft to Apple. The tech giant was prepared to conceal its search engine’s “Bing” branding on Apple devices to secure a default search engine agreement with the iPhone maker. Nadella noted that obtaining the coveted default status from Apple would have been a game-changer, given Apple’s considerable influence. He underscored the significant influence that Apple wields, stating, “Whomever they choose, they king-make.”

About Satya Nadella’s Testimony

Another aspect of Nadella’s testimony focused on Google’s aggressive tactics with publishers. He explained that Google’s exclusive and costly agreements with publishers created a competitive disadvantage for tech companies like Microsoft. These deals often forced Microsoft to match Google’s offers when seeking access to valuable content required for training artificial intelligence models.

Nadella expressed concerns about the potential consequences of Google’s dominant position in search. He worried that Google could leverage this dominance to pressure content providers essential for training generative AI models. He emphasized the need to break free from the cycle of exclusivity and hefty payouts in the tech industry.

Nadella’s testimony painted a picture of Google’s overwhelming power in the search market, which the US Justice Department contends has resulted in anti-competitive behavior detrimental to both competitors and consumers.

Google’s Search Dominance Under Scrutiny

Satya Nadella’s testimony in the Google antitrust trial underscored the difficulties presented by Google’s search engine dominance. Microsoft was prepared to hide the “Bing” brand to secure a default status on Apple devices, revealing the extent of Google’s power. Nadella also expressed concerns about Google’s control over content providers and its potential impact on AI development. The trial will assess whether Google’s actions have violated antitrust laws, affecting tech industry competition and innovation.

Dahi vs. Greek Yogurt: Unveiling the Health Differences

Dahi vs. Greek Yogurt: Unveiling the Health Differences

People often talk about Greek yogurt and its numerous benefits. But, that doesn’t mean our regular dahi (curd) is any less healthy. It is essential to know the difference between Regular Dahi and Greek Yoghurt.

Difference Between Dahi and Greek Yogurt

Indian yogurt, or dahi, is typically made from cow’s milk or a blend of cow and buffalo milk. It is thicker and creamier than Greek yogurt. Thereby offering a rich, sweet flavor due to a prolonged fermentation process. In contrast, Greek yogurt is crafted from strained cow’s milk. It results in a dense, creamy texture with a milder sourness. The key contrasts lie in texture and flavor, but both can be part of a healthy diet.

Taste and Texture

Indian dahi boasts a more pronounced sweetness and a richer flavor profile. Its thicker, creamier consistency is attributed to the higher fat content from whole milk. Greek yogurt, on the other hand, is somewhat thinner and smoother due to the removal of some milk fat during straining. It offers a tangy, tart flavor and a neutral taste overall. Greek yogurt is known for its velvety texture, while Indian yogurt may have a slight graininess.

Nutritional Benefits

Greek yogurt is often perceived as healthier due to its higher protein content, making it a valuable choice. However, homemade dahi is also rich in good fats and probiotics. Moreover, homemade curd is free from preservatives. For those concerned about lactose intolerance, Greek yogurt is a suitable alternative.

Weight Loss Considerations

When it comes to weight loss, both dahi and Greek yogurt offer benefits. While Greek yogurt has more protein, regular homemade dahi contains good fats and probiotics. The key is to opt for plain variants to avoid added sugars and flavors that are counterproductive for weight loss.

Expert Insights

Clinical nutritionist Lovneet Batra emphasizes that both dahi and Greek yogurt are probiotic-rich and serve similar purposes in terms of gut health. Greek yogurt excels in protein content and thickness. However, the misconception that Greek yogurt is inherently healthier should be dispelled. Homemade dahi, devoid of preservatives, offers its own set of advantages.

Batra suggests that for those seeking weight loss, plain homemade curd is a viable option. She cautions against sugar-laden and flavored yogurts, whether Greek or regular, as they hinder weight loss efforts.

Conclusion: Ghar Ka Dahi vs. Greek Yogurt

In conclusion, there’s no need to go overboard with the fascination for Greek yogurt. Both dahi and Greek yogurt provide probiotics and health benefits. Homemade dahi offers good fats and is free from preservatives. Greek yogurt shines in terms of protein content and thickness. The key is to choose plain variants and, ultimately, both can be part of a healthy diet. So, your trusted ghar ka dahi may be just as good as packaged Greek yogurt, without the fuss.
