Sensex Sheds Over 500 Points, Nifty Closes Below 21,550 As Markets End Lower

Mumbai – Indian equity benchmarks extended losses for the third straight session and ended sharply lower on Wednesday, mirroring the weakness in global markets.

The BSE Sensex tanked 527 points or 0.7% to close at 71,357, while the NSE Nifty 50 settled at 21,517, down 142 points or 0.7% from its previous close.

Barring realty, PSU bank, and healthcare stocks, all other sectoral indices ended in the red. Metal, IT, and oil & gas stocks were the top losers – down up to 2.5%.

Tata Steel, JSW Steel, Wipro, Infosys, and Tech Mahindra were among the major losers – falling between 2-4% each. On the flipside, ITC, IndusInd Bank, Bharti Airtel, and SBI finished among prominent gainers.

Broader markets outperformed the benchmarks, with Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 settling 0.3% and 0.2% higher respectively.

Global cues remained weak after data showed factory activity contracted across Europe and Asia. Worries over slowing global growth and recession risks prompted investors to exit stocks.

Back home, India’s manufacturing PMI eased to an 18-month low of 54.9 in December, though it remained in the expansion zone for the 16th straight month.

In the Adani saga, the Supreme Court dismissed petitions seeking an independent probe, giving relief to the conglomerate. The judges stated that SEBI could handle the investigation into Hindenburg’s fraud allegations.

On the forex market front, the rupee ended little changed at 83.28 per US dollar, as falling crude oil prices were offset by losses in domestic shares and flat Asian currencies.

Going ahead, Indian markets may continue to see volatility amid the expiry of monthly derivatives contracts this week and concerns over expensive valuations, say analysts.

A viral Instagram reel shows the vendor vigorously slapping and twisting the cooked parathas before serving them to customers in what seems like a punishment. This distinct style of making the flatbread led to it being termed ‘pitai paratha’ (beaten paratha) on social media.

Instead of using traditional preparation methods, the vendor is seen almost laundering the parathas with his bare hands. The bizarre vision has left thousands of viewers both bemused and amused.

“Is he making paratha or washing clothes?” quipped one user, while another jokingly asked if the vendor had aspirations of being a laundry worker. One comment remarked that the paratha probably owed the vendor money.

Popular food delivery app Swiggy also joined in the banter, anthropomorphizing the hapless paratha by writing: “Paratha be like mujhe kyu toda?? (Why did you break me)?”

The vendor’s unique style comes across as a rather rough treatment of the poor paratha. But it hasn’t stopped people from having some laugh at the expense of the twisted flatbread.

Such curiosities highlighting the Indian street food landscape often go viral for the sheer ingenuity or talent displayed by vendors. Whether it is mixing drinks or preparing Chinese dishes at blazing speed, these vendors spawn mass interest through their distinctive skills.

The ‘pitai paratha’ joins the array of sights and sounds that characterize the country’s lively and unpredictable street food culture. And netizens can’t seem to get enough of these talented vendors and their next amusing offering.

Chhattisgarh Declares 'Dry Day' On Jan 22 For Ram Temple Consecration

Raipur – The Chhattisgarh government has announced a ‘dry day’ across the state on January 22 to mark the consecration ceremony of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel stated that no sale of liquor will be allowed in Chhattisgarh on the day when the construction of the grand Ram Mandir concludes with a consecration ritual.

“As you all know, we have been observing ‘good governance days’ from December 25 to January 2. Lord Ram’s reign has been a model for our good governance,” the CM said, underlining the state’s connection to Lord Ram.

Chhattisgarh is believed to be the maternal home (animal) of Lord Ram. The village of Chandkhuri near Raipur is revered as the birthplace of Goddess Kaushalya, mother of Lord Ram, Baghel highlighted.

The CM also informed that 300 metric tonnes of aromatic rice grown in Chhattisgarh has been sent for the consecration ceremony along with vegetables cultivated by local farmers.

People across the state will also light earthen lamps on January 22 to mark the occasion, which is being seen as historic as a decades-long campaign culminates in the opening of the Ram Temple.

The Rs 1,800-crore grand temple’s construction began in 2020 at the site in Ayodhya where devotees believe Lord Ram was born. Its consecration will be attended by Prime Minister Modi along with over one lakh devotees.

“We are proud that produce grown by Chhattisgarh’s farmers will be used in the consecration rituals. It is a reflection of the glory of Lord Ram’s maternal home,” Baghel said.

The Ram Temple consecration falls ahead of Chhattisgarh state polls next year, with both major parties vying to showcase their respect for religious traditions and heritage.

India Reports 602 New COVID Cases, JN.1 Variant Cases Rise To 312

India logged 602 fresh COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, taking the active caseload to 4,440, according to data from the Union Health Ministry. The country also recorded 5 new fatalities in the last 24 hours.

The spike in cases comes amid growing concerns over the spread of a new Omicron sub-variant known as XBB or JN.1. As per the latest reports from the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), a total of 312 cases of the JN.1 variant have been detected across India so far.

Nearly half of these cases (147) were reported in Kerala alone, followed by Goa (51), Gujarat (34), Maharashtra (26) and Tamil Nadu (22). At least 10 states and UTs have reported the presence of this new sub-variant that is said to be more transmissible.

In the national capital Delhi, 16 cases of JN.1 have surfaced so far, mostly involving patients recovering under home isolation. Maharashtra has recorded 32 cases of this variant to date, but no virus-linked deaths were reported on Tuesday.

The rise in JN.1 cases comes on the back of an overall spike in India’s COVID-19 graph since early December 2022. After daily infections had dropped to double digits, the country is now logging 500+ cases every day amid colder weather and increased social gatherings.

However, India’s current COVID trajectory remains under control compared to the devastating second wave in 2021. The country’s vaccination coverage, natural immunity, and adherence to safety norms have prevented a rapid growth of cases so far.

But experts have warned people not to let their guard down as new Omicron offshoots coupled with festive gatherings and weakened adherence to masks/distancing protocols can cause the virus spread to rebound. They urge citizens to take their booster shots and stick to basic precautions ahead of a possible fresh wave.

NIA Conducts Raids In Rajasthan, Haryana Over Murder Of Karni Sena Chief

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday carried out searches at 31 locations in Rajasthan and Haryana in connection with the murder of Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena chief Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi.

Gogamedi was shot dead by three unidentified gunmen at his residence in Jaipur on December 5. The assailants had first had tea with the Karni Sena chief before opening fire on him. One of the attackers was also killed in retaliatory firing by Gogamedi’s security.

Gangster Rohit Godara, affiliated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, later claimed responsibility for the killing. He stated that Gogamedi was targeted due to his alleged links with their rivals.

Two suspected attackers – Rohit Rathore and Nitin Fauji – were arrested in Chandigarh on December 10 in a joint operation by Rajasthan and Delhi Police.

Reports state that the shooters had gone to Gogamedi’s house along with another person, Naveen Shekhawat. A cash reward of ₹5 lakh was announced for information leading to the arrest of Rathore and Fauji.

In the aftermath, the Rajasthan government demolished an illegally constructed house belonging to accused Rohit Rathore in Jaipur on December 28.

The NIA has now stepped up the probe into the high-profile murder that has links with prominent gangs like Lawrence Bishnoi. The searches aim to gather more evidence and investigate larger conspiracies behind the killing.

Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi headed the Shri Rajput Karni Sena, an organization founded in 2006 to unite Rajput groups. The Karni Sena had led violent protests against the film Padmaavat in 2018, accusing it of distorting Rajput history.

The NIA raids come amidst rising concerns over gangland rivalries spilling onto the streets and high-profile killings in recent years. Authorities are probing inter-state networks and possible terror angles behind such incidents.

Adani Shares Rally Ahead Of Apex Court Verdict On Hindenburg's Fraud Allegations

Shares of Adani group companies saw a strong rally on Wednesday morning ahead of the Supreme Court’s ruling on the allegations of accounting fraud and stock price manipulation against the conglomerate.

The apex court bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud is set to decide on a batch of public interest litigations (PILs) that have sought an independent probe into claims made by US short-seller Hindenburg Research against the Adani group.

Adani Enterprises, the group’s flagship firm, jumped over 6 percent on both the NSE and BSE. By 10:34 am, the stock was trading 6.82 percent higher at Rs 3,132 on the NSE and climbed 6.77 percent to Rs 3,130 on the BSE.

Other group companies like Adani Ports, Adani Total Gas, and Adani Transmission also witnessed robust buying interest, rising over 4-5 percent each in morning trade ahead of the SC verdict.

In its report last month, Hindenburg had accused the Adani group of engaging in stock manipulation, money laundering, and use of tax havens over decades. This led to a massive sell-off in Adani stocks. More than $100 billion in investor wealth was eroded within a few weeks after Hindenburg’s damning report.

The SC bench will decide whether market regulator SEBI alone can probe the allegations or if there is a need for a wider SIT investigation. The judges will also rule if SEBI needs to review its recent changes in rules for foreign investors and disclosure of share pledges made after Hindenburg’s short-seller report rocked Adani shares.

Today’s ruling is keenly watched by investors amid the sharp recovery in Adani stocks this week ahead of the court verdict on allegations termed as “baseless” by the conglomerate.

Indian Equities Retreat From Record Highs As Investors Book Profits

Indian shares declined for the third straight session on Wednesday, with the benchmark Sensex falling over 200 points amid a broader selloff in equities.

The S&P BSE Sensex dropped 271 points to 71,620 in early trade, while the NSE Nifty 50 index declined 71 points to 21,594. The selloff was broad-based, with most sectoral indices trading lower.

The losses in the market were led by information technology and metal stocks. The Nifty IT index fell 2.02% and the Nifty Metal index declined 1.16%. Software exporters like Infosys, HCL Tech, and Wipro dragged the markets. JSW Steel and Tata Steel also contributed to the decline.

Meanwhile, consumer goods and healthcare stocks bucked the weak trend, cushioning the markets’ fall. ITC, Hindustan Unilever, and Sun Pharma were among the notable gainers.

In the broader market, midcaps and small-caps also witnessed selling pressure. The Nifty Midcap Select index shed 0.48% while the Nifty Smallcap 50 index was down 0.45%.

The domestic currency rupee, however, appreciated 4 paise to 83.28 per dollar amid the fall in crude oil prices. Brent crude was trading at $75.88 per barrel.

Analysts attributed the market’s decline to profit-booking at record-high valuations. Even domestic institutional investors, who have been consistent buyers, were seen booking profits.

On Tuesday, the Sensex had shed 400 points to close at 71,892, while the Nifty settled 81 points lower at 21,660. The pullback in the market came after the recent rally which led benchmarks to touch lifetime highs last week.
