China Warns EU Right Before Tariff Decision

0

China has accused the European Union of attempting to “suppress” Chinese companies and has vowed to take action to protect its interests as the EU moves closer to imposing tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.

China’s Commerce Minister, Wang Wentao, expressed a preference for resolving economic and trade disputes through dialogue to prevent an uncontrolled escalation, according to an official statement made during a meeting with Chinese businesses in Spain on Saturday.

Wang noted that leaders from France, Germany, and the EU have expressed a desire to avoid a trade war.

“If the EU does not practice what it preaches and continues to suppress Chinese companies, China will take all necessary measures to firmly safeguard the legitimate interests of Chinese companies,” the statement read.

The EU has initiated several trade investigations against China, citing anti-dumping and unfair subsidy practices, particularly in the clean-technology sector. The bloc must inform Chinese EV exporters by early June if it plans to impose tariffs and their potential rates, which could be enforced a month later.

In response, China has already begun an anti-dumping investigation into European brandy, specifically targeting French cognacs. State media have also suggested possible retaliation against European cars and pork.

Wang criticized the EU for using claims of overcapacity, unfair competition, and “other false narratives” to justify investigations into Chinese sectors like EVs, railways, solar, and medical equipment, thereby heightening the risk of trade friction between China and the EU.

He called on the EU to move away from protectionism and instead pursue dialogue and cooperation, as per a separate statement following his visit to a planned Chinese car factory in Spain on Sunday.

OpenAI Says it Stopped Israel-Based Company’s Attempt to Sabotage Lok Sabha Elections 2024

OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, reported that within 24 hours, they acted to disrupt deceptive uses of AI in covert operations targeting the Indian elections, resulting in no significant increase in audience engagement.

In a report on its website, OpenAI detailed that STOIC, a political campaign management firm from Israel, created content related to the Indian elections and the Gaza conflict.

“In May, the network began generating comments focused on India, criticizing the ruling BJP party and praising the opposition Congress party,” the report stated. “We disrupted some activity focused on the Indian elections less than 24 hours after it began.”

OpenAI said it banned a cluster of accounts operated from Israel, which were used to generate and edit content for an influence operation spanning X, Facebook, Instagram, websites, and YouTube. “This operation targeted audiences in Canada, the United States, and Israel with content in English and Hebrew. In early May, it began targeting audiences in India with English-language content.”

The report did not provide further details.

Minister of State for Electronics & Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, commented on the report, saying, “It is absolutely clear and obvious that @BJP4India was and is the target of influence operations, misinformation, and foreign interference, conducted by and/or on behalf of some Indian political parties.

“This is a very dangerous threat to our democracy. It is clear vested interests in India and outside are driving this and need to be deeply scrutinized, investigated, and exposed. My view at this point is that these platforms could have released this much earlier, and not so late when elections are ending,” he added.

OpenAI emphasized its commitment to developing safe and broadly beneficial AI. “Our investigations into suspected covert influence operations (IO) are part of a broader strategy to meet our goal of safe AI deployment.”

OpenAI also stated its commitment to enforcing policies that prevent abuse and improve transparency around AI-generated content, particularly in detecting and disrupting covert influence operations intended to manipulate public opinion or political outcomes without disclosing the true identity or intentions of the actors involved.

“In the last three months, we have disrupted five covert IOs that sought to use our models for deceptive activities across the internet. As of May 2024, these campaigns do not appear to have meaningfully increased their audience engagement or reach as a result of our services,” the report said.

OpenAI described its operations, noting that activity by a commercial company in Israel called STOIC was disrupted, but the company itself was not affected.

“We nicknamed this operation Zero Zeno, after the founder of the stoic school of philosophy. The individuals behind Zero Zeno used our models to generate articles and comments, which were then posted across multiple platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, X, and websites associated with this operation,” the report concluded.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the “high” annual growth rate of 8.2% in FY24 as “just a trailer of things to come,” following the release of figures by the National Statistical Office (NSO) on Friday.

“The Q4 GDP growth data for 2023-24 shows robust momentum in our economy, which is poised to further accelerate. Thanks to the hardworking people of our country, the 8.2% growth for 2023-24 exemplifies that India continues to be the fastest-growing major economy globally,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter) shortly after the NSO released the figures.

The GDP numbers were released on the eve of the seventh and final round of polling in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Fifty-seven parliamentary constituencies, including Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi, where the PM is seeking a third consecutive term, will go to the polls in the last phase.

PM Modi, who is aiming for a third consecutive term in the country’s top office, has repeatedly spoken about taking “even bigger decisions” in his next term.

Meanwhile, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman affirmed that the country’s “growth momentum” will continue into the Prime Minister’s third term as well.

“This remarkable GDP growth rate is the highest among the major economies of the world. Many high-frequency indicators show that the Indian economy remains resilient and buoyant despite global challenges,” Sitharaman posted on her X handle.

A man was arrested for allegedly carrying a firearm illegally onto the district court campus and assaulting a woman with whom he had a legal dispute.

The man, identified as Chandrapal Singh, raised concerns about security on the premises when he entered the court campus with a firearm.

Chandrapal Singh, a resident of Semra Gauri under the Madiyaon police station limits, hails from Izzat Nagar in Bareilly.

According to reports, Chandrapal arrived at the district court in a four-wheeler and parked in a space reserved for judicial officers. He managed to enter the court campus with a pistol through the parking area entrance.

Inside the court, Chandrapal allegedly assaulted Pushpa Anil, with whom he had a legal dispute. As Pushpa raised the alarm, her lawyer intervened and apprehended Chandrapal.

Upon receiving information, the Wazirganj police arrived at the court and took Chandrapal into custody.

Station House Officer Deepak Pandey stated that Chandrapal was arrested based on Pushpa Anil’s complaint and for carrying a firearm illegally inside the court campus.

This incident brings back memories of the sensational murder of gangster Sanjeev Maheshwari ‘Jeeva’ inside a courtroom on June 7, 2023. Maheshwari, accused in the murder case of BJP leader Brahm Dutt Dwivedi, was shot dead by an assailant disguised as a lawyer during court proceedings. Following this, security in district courts across the state was tightened, with the installation of DFMDs and baggage scanners at all entrances.

Anurag Srivastava, the joint secretary of the Central Bar Association of the district court, demanded a review of the court’s security and accountability for the incident. “How can a person carrying a firearm enter the court campus? This is a serious issue,” said Srivastava.

John Lennon’s Son Says “Idiot” Prince Harry Who Deserves to be Mocked

0

Prince Harry was harshly criticized by Sean Ono Lennon, the son of the late John Lennon, who called him an “idiot.”

The 48-year-old musician stirred controversy among the Duke of Sussex’s supporters with a biting joke about Harry’s memoir, ‘Spare.’ Ono Lennon tweeted, “My long awaited review of Prince Harry’s autobiography is two words. ‘Spare Me.’”

His comment sparked backlash on social media, with many royal fans defending Prince Harry. Ono Lennon stood by his remarks, sharing an anecdote about meeting Princess Diana’s youngest son. He said, “Actually I am aware [that we have things in common]. We met once. That was before I realized he was an idiot.”

The Oscar winner defended his initial post, explaining, “It was a pun. But he deserves to be mocked after that todger episode. He’ll be fine.”

The “todger” comment refers to a passage in Prince Harry’s memoir where he describes treating his frostbitten penis, which he called his “todger,” with his late mother’s favorite lip cream.

As social media users rallied in support of the duke, highlighting the personal tragedies he has endured, Ono Lennon responded, “That is very sad. I don’t hold any of that against him. It’s the stupidity that bothers me.”

“Just because I made a joke does not mean I don’t empathize with him. I do actually. Also why I’m very disappointed with his outlook. I was hoping he’d be smarter,” he added.

“I do empathize with him generally. But the way he whines and wangs on about things is really too much,” the Oscar-winning singer replied to another commenter. “I’m just having a little fun. I think he’s earned some mockery. (I’m sure I have as well).”

Ono Lennon also engaged with a Sussex fan who suggested he might be jealous of Prince Harry’s success as a best-selling author. He retorted, “I mean, I don’t care but I did win an Oscar this year so…I think I’m doing okay.”

Ono Lennon won the Academy Award in March for Best Animated Short Film for ‘War Is Over! Inspired by the Music of John & Yoko,’ which he co-wrote with director Dave Mullins.

IMD Predicts Moonsoon to Hit Multiple States Soon

0

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Friday that the southwest monsoon has advanced into the remaining parts of the Bay of Bengal, Tripura, Meghalaya, Assam, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim. The monsoon has also set in over Kerala in southern India today.

“Conditions are favorable for the southwest monsoon to advance further into additional parts of the central Arabian Sea, the remaining parts of the south Arabian Sea, the Lakshadweep area, Kerala, parts of Karnataka, more parts of Tamil Nadu, and the Southwest Bay of Bengal over the next three days,” the IMD stated.

This year, the southwest monsoon arrived early, making its entry on Thursday, two days ahead of schedule. It has set in over Kerala and Mahe and progressed into most parts of northeast India, including Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, and most parts of Tripura, Meghalaya, and Assam.

According to the IMD, the monsoon typically sets in over Kerala on June 1 and advances over most of northeast India by June 5. In recent days, widespread rains preceded the monsoon’s arrival in these states.

Usually, after entering Kerala and reaching the northeast, the monsoon gradually progresses through the country, reaching the northernmost parts between late June and early July.

The four-month monsoon season, starting in June, is crucial for much of the country, especially for rural areas reliant on agriculture. It provides three-quarters of India’s annual rainfall, essential for watering crops, filling reservoirs, and boosting farm incomes and consumer demand.

The IMD has forecast above-normal rains at 106% of the 50-year long-period average (LPA) this year. The rains are expected to be above normal in most rain-fed farming areas, according to an updated forecast earlier this week. The IMD has attributed a 61% probability to above normal (105-110% of LPA) and excess rains (over 110% of LPA), which could increase the risk of floods in some parts of the country.

Central Water Commission Report Suggests Major Water Level Drop

0

According to data from the Central Water Commission (CWC), the water level of the country’s 150 main reservoirs has dropped to 23 percent, which is 77 percent lower than the levels at this time last year.

The current storage is only 77 percent of last year’s levels and 94 percent of the normal storage, as stated by the CWC. In its latest weekly bulletin released on Friday, the commission reported that “the total live storage available is 41.705 billion cubic metres (BCM), equating to 23 percent of the total capacity.”

“This represents a significant decrease from the 53.832 BCM recorded during the same period last year and the normal storage level of 44.511 BCM. Consequently, the current storage is only 77 percent of last year’s levels and 94 percent of the normal storage,” the commission added.

The 150 main reservoirs monitored by the CWC have a combined live storage capacity of 178.784 BCM, approximately 69.35 percent of the total storage capacity created in the country.

Ten of these reservoirs are located in the northern region—Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Rajasthan—with a live storage capacity of 19.663 BCM. This has dropped to 5.864 BCM (30 percent of total capacity), according to the CWC bulletin for the week of May 16 to May 31. Last year, during the same period, storage was at 38 percent. The normal storage at this time of year is 31 percent.

In the eastern region—Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Tripura, Nagaland, and Bihar—there are 23 reservoirs with a total live storage capacity of 20.430 BCM. The available storage is 5.645 BCM, or 28 percent of the total capacity, the commission reported. Last year, it was 25 percent. The normal storage is 26 percent.

In the western region—Gujarat and Maharashtra—there are 49 reservoirs with a total live storage capacity of 37.130 BCM. The current live storage is 8.833 BCM, or 24 percent of the total capacity, a decrease from last year’s 28 percent but an improvement over the normal storage of 23 percent.

The central region—Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh—has 26 reservoirs with a total live storage capacity of 48.227 BCM. The current storage is 14.046 BCM, or 29.1 percent of the total capacity. Last year, the storage was 37 percent. The normal storage is 29.4 percent. Thus, the current 29.1 percent is below both last year’s level and the normal level.

In the southern region—Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu—there are 42 reservoirs with a total live storage capacity of 53.334 BCM. The available storage is 7.317 BCM, or 14 percent of the total capacity, significantly lower than last year’s 24 percent and the normal storage of 19 percent.

The report highlights that better than normal storage is available in the Ganga, Indus, Brahmaputra, Brahmani and Baitarni, Narmada, Tapi, and Sabarmati basins.

Indian-origin Researcher Discovers New Technology that Can Charge a Dead Phone or Laptop in a Minute

0

Charging an electronic appliance typically takes at least 30 minutes. However, advancements in science and technology have now made it possible to charge a dead laptop or mobile phone in a minute and an electric car in just 10 minutes. This groundbreaking technology, developed by Indian-origin researcher Ankur Gupta, has revolutionized the field.

Ankur Gupta, an assistant professor of chemical and biological engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder, and his team have published their findings in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. They discovered a way to significantly enhance the movement of ions—tiny charged particles—within a complex network of microscopic pores. Gupta explained that this breakthrough could lead to the development of more efficient energy storage devices, such as supercapacitors.

Supercapacitors are energy storage devices that depend on ion collection in their pores. Gupta emphasized that this invention is particularly important for electric vehicles (EVs), electronic devices, and power grids. Supercapacitors can charge more quickly and have longer lifespans than traditional batteries.

Regarding power grids, Gupta noted that fluctuating energy demands require efficient storage solutions to minimize waste during low-demand periods and ensure rapid energy delivery during high-demand times.

“Given the critical role of energy in the planet’s future, I felt inspired to apply my chemical engineering knowledge to advancing energy storage devices,” Gupta said. “It felt like the topic was somewhat underexplored and, as such, the perfect opportunity.”

“The primary appeal of supercapacitors lies in their speed. So how can we make their charging and energy release faster? By improving the movement of ions. That’s the leap of this work. We found the missing link,” he added.

The researchers also highlighted that their discovery allows for the simulation and prediction of ion flow in a complex network of thousands of interconnected pores within minutes. Before this breakthrough, ion movements were only described in the literature as occurring within a single straight pore.

Donald Trump Supports Want For Riots After His Felony Conviction

0

Supporters of former President Donald Trump, outraged by his conviction on 34 felony counts by a New York jury, inundated pro-Trump websites with calls for riots, revolution, and violent retribution.

After Trump became the first U.S. president to be convicted of a crime, his supporters responded with numerous violent online posts, according to a Reuters review of comments on three Trump-aligned websites: the former president’s own Truth Social platform, Patriots.Win, and the Gateway Pundit.

Some called for attacks on jurors, the execution of the judge, Justice Juan Merchan, or outright civil war and armed insurrection.

“Someone in NY with nothing to lose needs to take care of Merchan,” wrote one commentator on Patriots.Win. “Hopefully he gets met with illegals with a machete,” the post said, referencing illegal immigrants.

On Gateway Pundit, one poster suggested shooting liberals after the verdict. “Time to start capping some leftys,” said the post. “This cannot be fixed by voting.”

Threats of violence and intimidating rhetoric surged after Trump lost the 2020 election and falsely claimed the vote was stolen. As he campaigns for a second White House term, Trump has baselessly portrayed the judges and prosecutors in his trials as corrupt tools of the Biden administration, intent on sabotaging his bid. His loyalists have responded with a campaign of threats and intimidation targeting judges and court officials.

“This was a disgrace, this was a rigged trial by a conflicted judge who was corrupt,” Trump told reporters afterward, echoing comments he often made during the trial.

A 12-member jury found Trump guilty on Thursday of falsifying documents to cover up a payment to silence a porn star’s account of a sexual encounter ahead of the 2016 election. Sentencing is set for July 11, days before the Republican Party is scheduled to formally nominate Trump for president ahead of the November 5 election. Trump has denied wrongdoing and is expected to appeal.

Trump continued his attacks online after the verdict.

On Truth Social, he called Merchan “HIGHLY CONFLICTED” and criticized his jury instructions as unfair. One commentator responded by posting a picture of a hangman’s platform and a noose with the caption: “TREASONOUS MOBSTER OF THE JUSTICES SYSTEM!!”

Jacob Ware, a co-author of the book “God, Guns, and Sedition: Far-Right Terrorism in America”, said the violent language used by Trump’s followers was testament to the former president’s “ironclad ability to mobilize more extreme supporters to action, both at the ballot box and through violence.”

“Until and unless he accepts the process, the extremist reaction to his legal troubles will be militant,” said Ware, a research fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations.

A spokesperson for Truth Social said, “It’s hard to believe that Reuters, once a respected news service, has fallen so low as to publish such a manipulative, false, defamatory and transparently stupid article as this one purely out of political spite.”

All three sites have policies against violent language, and some of the posts were later removed. Representatives of Patriots.Win and Gateway Pundit did not immediately return requests for comment. A Trump spokesperson also did not respond to an email seeking comment.
