Indian Stock Markets Extend Losses Amid Global Selloff

Sensex Surges Over 700 Points; Nifty Tops 21,600 As Banks Lead Rally

The Indian stock markets extended their fall on Thursday, tracking weak global cues and continued selling by foreign investors. The BSE Sensex declined 432 points to 71,069 in early trade, while the NSE Nifty 50 index fell 151 points to 21,420.

All sectoral indices were trading in the red, with financials, oil & gas, metal, and IT stocks witnessing significant losses. On the Sensex pack, Asian Paints, NTPC, PowerGrid, HDFC Bank, IndusInd Bank, and JSW Steel were among the top losers. Meanwhile, Sun Pharma, Axis Bank, Tata Motors, ICICI Bank, M&M, and Bharti Airtel bucked the trend to trade higher.

The selloff comes a day after the Sensex plummeted 1,628 points and the Nifty plunged 460 points, led by a sharp fall in HDFC Bank after its Q3 results disappointed investors. Analysts pointed out that valuations remain elevated and markets are prone to sell-offs triggered by negative news or events.

According to V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, the sell-off also reflects emerging market weakness amid foreign portfolio investor (FPI) outflows driven by rising bond yields in the US. On Wednesday, FPIs sold equities worth Rs 10,578 crore in the cash market segment. However, some support from domestic institutional investors (DIIs) is likely in fairly valued large caps.

Asian markets presented a mixed picture, with Shanghai lower while Seoul, Tokyo, and Hong Kong trading higher. US markets had declined overnight, further weighing on sentiment. Market participants will closely monitor FII flows and global cues for further direction.

Arctic Blast Ends 2-Year ‘Snow Drought’ In New York; Brings Frigid Temperatures Across US

After nearly two years of unusually warm and dry winters, an Arctic cold front sweeping across the United States has ushered in heavy snow and record-breaking subzero temperatures this week.

In New York City, which has seen barely a dusting of snow since 2021, up to 1.4 inches coated Central Park as of Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service’s New York office announced on Facebook, “The streak has ended!” referring to the two-year drought of significant snowfall.

Parts of western New York endured a massive blizzard dumping over 3 feet of snow, with a further lake-effect snow warning in place until Thursday. The interaction of cold winds with the unfrozen Great Lakes frequently causes localized heavy snow in winter.

The nation’s lowest temperature was recorded at -36F in Briggsdale, Colorado, with wind chills poised to hit -30F across the Northern and Central plains. At least 5 deaths have been linked to the cold snap so far.

The chill has extended to the UK as well, with Tuesday night expected to be the coldest January night since 2010. Scotland in particular may see over 10cm of snow and temperatures as frigid as -15C.

The extreme weather has prompted school closures in Scotland and northern England. Yellow warnings for ice and snow have been issued UK-wide. By Friday, over 40cm of snow is predicted to pile up in Scottish highlands.

With the NHS under pressure, the UK Health Security Agency released an amber cold weather alert, citing threats to elderly and vulnerable citizens. Temperatures are running 5 to 6 degrees Celsius below the January average.

So after years of mild winters, the US and UK are finally witnessing a bone-chilling cold spell and disruptive snowfall thanks to winds sweeping down from the Arctic circle.

Drama In Bigg Boss House As Vicky Jain Refuses To Kiss Wife Ankita Lokhande

In a rather awkward moment on the reality TV show Bigg Boss 17, contestant Vicky Jain refused to kiss his actress wife Ankita Lokhande when she tried to get intimate with him on the show.

During Tuesday’s episode, Ankita attempted to patch things up with Vicky after the couple had several heated arguments in recent episodes. Their relationship troubles have been a prime focus in the show’s final weeks.

Ankita got dressed up, showed Vicky her makeup, and went to kiss him while he was lying in bed. However, Vicky felt uncomfortable and gently asked her not to kiss his cheek again.

“It doesn’t look nice repeatedly. Don’t get angry, please try to understand and just smile,” Vicky told Ankita.

To this, the actress retorted, “Who else should I kiss if not my husband? You don’t kiss me, at least let me do it.”

Vicky clarified that he felt awkward kissing on the lips in front of the national television audience. Ankita mentioned she only tried to kiss his cheek.

In another twist, Ankita accused Vicky of behaving like a “womanizer” in the house. The couple’s mothers also entered the Bigg Boss house last week, possibly to mediate between the duo.

As the show nears its finale, melodrama has gripped the Bigg Boss 17 house. All contestants are pulling out the stops to clinch the winner trophy. The Vicky-Ankita equation will likely stoke more drama and clashes before a winner is declared.

Thick Fog In Delhi Leads To Massive Disruption In Flights, Trains; Over 100 Flights Delayed, 25 Cancelled

Dense fog conditions over the past 24 hours have resulted in major disruptions in flight and train operations in Delhi, leaving hundreds of passengers hassled.

As per Delhi airport authorities, low visibility due to fog has led to delays in the departure of over 110 flights and the cancellation of 25 flights till Wednesday morning. Several trains heading in and out of Delhi also run behind schedule by 5-7 hours due to poor visibility.

Passengers were seen waiting anxiously at the Delhi airport and railway stations in light of the delays and cancellations. Many complained about trains and flights getting rescheduled on the day of travel with little information from the carriers.

“I have come from Dubai and my flight got delayed by 2 hours. It has been very inconvenient,” said passenger Mritunjay Kumar at the Delhi airport.

Similarly, Ajay, a railway passenger heading to Kerala said, “The Kerala Express I was to take is running 5 hours behind schedule. I have no idea what time it will arrive or depart.”

The India Meteorological Department has said dense to very dense fog is likely to envelop parts of North India over the next 4-5 days. On Tuesday night, visibility dropped to 300 meters and improved only slightly to 600 meters by Wednesday morning.

The adverse weather has also impacted road travel, leading to fatal accidents. In one incident in Muzaffarnagar, UP, two people were killed as their tractor plunged into a canal due to poor visibility.

Taking serious note of the situation, Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated that the 4th runway at Delhi Airport will be operationalized soon to minimize disruption during inclement weather. He also indicated that a standard protocol will be framed to facilitate better communication and assistance to passengers.

The dense fog spell is expected to continue this week, which may lead to persistent delays and cancellations across transportation services in North India.

Sensex Surges Over 700 Points; Nifty Tops 21,600 As Banks Lead Rally

The Indian stock markets witnessed a sharp selloff on Wednesday morning, with the benchmark Sensex plunging over 1,000 points and the Nifty slipping below the 21,750 level.

The BSE Sensex tanked 1,029 points or 1.4% to trade at 72,099 in early deals. Similarly, the NSE Nifty 50 index fell 287 points or 1.3% to 21,745.

The banking stocks were the worst hit in today’s session, contributing significantly to the indices’ fall. HDFC Bank plunged over 6% on the BSE and was the top Sensex loser. Other banking names like Kotak Mahindra Bank, ICICI Bank, and Bajaj Finserv also faced heavy selling pressure.

Besides banking, metal and realty stocks also bore the brunt of selling. Tata Steel, JSW Steel, IndusInd Bank, Mahindra & Mahindra were among the other prominent losers – down between 2-5%.

On the flip side, IT stocks like TCS, Infosys, HCL Tech, and Tech Mahindra managed to buck the weak trend and trade higher. Gains in these counters, along with PowerGrid, L&T, and ITC, lent some support and capped the downside.

The sharp fall in domestic indices mirrored the bearish trends in global equity markets amid recessionary fears. Lingering worries over inflation and tighter monetary policy across the world have spooked investor sentiment.

In the previous session on Tuesday, the Sensex had dropped 199 points or 0.3% to close at 73,129. The Nifty 50 index lost 65 points or 0.3% to settle at 22,032.
