Munawar Faruqui Calls Bigg Boss Journey A "Roller Coaster Ride" After Winning Show

Standup Comedian Munawar Faruqui described his “Bigg Boss” victory on Sunday as a “roller coaster ride” that tested yet improved him. Host Salman Khan declared Faruqui the winner of season 17 on his 32nd birthday.

Reflecting on the demanding show, Faruqui told PTI, “It tests you…I was drained out mentally. I kept going for myself and my fans. It has been a roller coaster journey.” Despite difficulties, he felt blessed to have found resilience.

Competing against popular figures like Ankita Lokhande and Shiv Thakare, Faruqui entertained through wit and humor. However, his personal life also faced scrutiny when his ex-girlfriend entered as a wild card contestant, calling him a “womanizer.”

While admitting the “womanizer” label hurts, Faruqui said he has worked respectfully with many women. “As a public figure I’m paying the price…this is like an EMI that you have to pay,” he analogized.

In the finale moments, despite confidence in his odds, Faruqui felt unsure amidst the competition. But after processing his win, securing Rs 50 lakhs and a new car, he is simply humbled by the experience and evolution.

Faruqui gained fame and controversy in 2021 for alleged remarks on Hindu gods during a show, resulting in over a month of jail time. He won Kangana Ranaut’s 2022 reality show “Lock Upp” before entering Bigg Boss.

Going forward, he confirmed continuing stand-up comedy which he calls his “home.” Faruqui said, “I love humor, and you will see me doing a lot of stand-up comedy.”

He thanked host Salman Khan, calling him his “bade bhai” (big brother) for guidance during what ultimately was a rewarding “roller coaster ride.”

X 'Temporarily' Blocks Searches For Taylor Swift After Explicit Deepfakes Go Viral

After explicit deepfake images and videos depicting pop singer Taylor Swift went viral this week, social media platform X has temporarily blocked searches for the singer’s name.

X’s head of business operations, Joe Benarroch, stated this was a “temporary action” meant to prioritize user safety, as searches for Taylor Swift on the site currently display an error message.

The deepfakes, created using AI to digitally impose Swift’s face onto graphic imagery without her consent, gained traction earlier this week. Some amassed millions of views, prompting concern from Swift’s fanbase and US officials. Fans mobilized by flagging posts and using the hashtag #protecttaylorswift.

On Friday, X asserted a “zero tolerance policy” against non-consensual nudity and vowed to remove offending images and take action against associated accounts. However, it’s unclear precisely when the search blocking began.

Benarroch said the move came “with an abundance of caution as we prioritize safety.” The White House also condemned the spread of AI-generated content disproportionately targeting women. Press Secretary Jean-Pierre advocated for legislation addressing the misuse of AI on social media.

There are currently no US federal laws explicitly banning deepfakes, although some states have taken action. In 2023, the UK banned the sharing of deepfake pornography.

Last November, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also warned of the dangers of deceptive deepfake content and AI misuse, while touting his country’s progress. He promoted India’s vocal for local initiative and expressed confidence in India’s trajectory, citing successes like its COVID-19 response.

As calls grow for legal solutions, X maintains its temporary block on Taylor Swift searches for now. But the incident highlights growing unease around the spread of non-consensual deepfakes.

Sensex Surges Over 700 Points; Nifty Tops 21,600 As Banks Lead Rally

Indian benchmarks Sensex and Nifty opened sharply higher on Monday, tracking strong cues from global markets. The BSE Sensex jumped over 700 points led by gains in banking and financial stocks, while the Nifty reclaimed the 21,600 mark.

The Sensex was trading at 71,477, up 777 points in early deals. The NSE Nifty 50 index also climbed nearly 250 points to 21,590.

The rally was broad-based with all Nifty sectoral indices trading in the positive territory. Banks, capital goods, power, realty, and metal stocks saw strong buying interest and rose between 1-2 percent each.

Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, PowerGrid, and Larsen & Toubro were among the top Sensex gainers. On the flip side, Infosys, TCS, ITC, and Tata Steel faced selling pressure.

Broader midcap and smallcap indices also joined the rally, rising over 0.5% each in early trade.

The uptick in domestic equities comes on the back of highly positive trends across global markets. Overnight, Wall Street ended on a mixed note while Asian markets like Nikkei, Kospi, Hang Seng, and Straits Times climbed nearly 1% each this morning.

Rising crude oil prices and foreign fund outflows remain key headwinds for the Indian markets. However, analysts feel the ongoing momentum may be sustained if global cues remain supportive.

Delhi Braces For Rain And Fog; Trains Delayed Due To Weather

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light rain in Delhi on January 31 and February 1 as a second western disturbance approaches the plains. The rain spells come amid dense fog that has enveloped north India over the past few days.

The IMD warned that very dense fog and severe cold days are likely in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar over the next two days before gradual improvement. Visibility levels across various cities in the region have dropped below 500 meters.

Additionally, the department predicted heavy rain or snowfall in Jammu, Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand in the coming days. Cold wave conditions are also expected to continue in areas of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

The inclement weather has resulted in delays and cancellations of trains at the New Delhi Railway Station. The Hirakund Express was canceled, while the Kalka Shatabdi Express and other trains were running behind schedule by over 10 hours today.

Officials say minimum temperatures will likely rise by 2-5 degrees Celsius over parts of northwest, east, and west India over the next 3-5 days providing some respite from the cold wave. But dense fog remains a concern that could affect normal life and disrupt transport services.

The IMD continues to monitor the weather system closely and has advised state administrations to take necessary precautions. Commuters also have been asked to check for the latest updates to avoid inconveniences.

BSF, Punjab Police Recover Pakistani Drone With Heroin In Amritsar

A joint operation by the Border Security Force (BSF) and Punjab Police led to the recovery of a Pakistani drone carrying heroin in the Amritsar district on Wednesday.

Acting on intelligence inputs, the security forces carried out search operations in the farming fields of Mode village near the international border.

They succeeded in retrieving a drone with a packet containing 519 grams of heroin attached to it using tapes and metal rings.

According to an official BSF statement on Thursday, the drone has been identified as a Chinese-made DJI Mavic 3 Pro model quadcopter.

The successful recovery has once again highlighted the persistent attempts by cross-border smugglers to use drones for transporting narcotics and arms into Indian territory.

However, the continued vigilance of border guarding troops has managed to foil these bids frequently.

Just a day earlier, BSF patrol teams also detected another China-manufactured drone from agricultural land in Roranwala Khurd village during area domination exercises.

Several drone sightings have been reported in recent months along the India-Pakistan border as security forces crack down on this new modus operandi for smuggling.

The border force has been taking several measures to tighten surveillance and counter the emerging aerial threat from across the border.

Flipkart Co-Founder Binny Bansal Quits Company Board Over Conflict With New Venture

Flipkart co-founder Binny Bansal has resigned from the e-commerce firm’s board, citing a potential conflict of interest with his latest entrepreneurial venture OppDoor.

Bansal, who established Flipkart along with Sachin Bansal in 2007, recently launched the startup firm OppDoor which provides global expansion services to businesses through its software platform.

According to a company statement on Friday, Bansal informed the Flipkart board about stepping down earlier this week due to his new venture operating in a space that could clash with the e-commerce giant’s interest at times.

However, Flipkart CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy thanked Bansal for his long partnership, insights, and contribution that helped Flipkart enter new domains. The group has ventured into payments, logistics, and quick commerce over the years.

Binny has also sold his equity shareholding in Flipkart after its $16 billion acquisition by Walmart in 2018. However, he retained his board seat and mentorship role as one of the key founders.

Leigh Hopkins, a representative of Walmart on the Flipkart board, acknowledged the value brought in by Bansal through his unique experience. He wished the entrepreneur success with his latest start-up.

Apart from OppDoor, Bansal retains his directorship with digital payments firm PhonePe which was spun off from the Flipkart group to chart its own growth path recently.

The company is also preparing to foray into e-commerce on its own through its subsidiary Pincode, intensifying competition with Flipkart’s core business itself.

Salesforce Lays Off Around 700 Employees Across Verticals

Enterprise software major Salesforce has laid off about 700 employees globally, representing nearly 1 percent of its workforce, as per a Wall Street Journal report on Friday.

The job cuts spanned various business units and departments after a review by the company leadership. However, Salesforce continues to have over 1,000 open positions currently, indicating routine workforce restructuring.

The move aligns with recent workforce trimming exercises by other tech majors like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and eBay amid mounting recessionary pressures. Most firms had overhired during the pandemic to meet surging demand.

Notably, Salesforce had also cut jobs by 10 percent last year after discovering inefficiencies from rapid expansion. The streamlining helped shore up margins and boost revenue growth in subsequent quarters this year.

The company even projected stronger full-year profit guidance on the back of higher efficiency. It has additionally announced plans to add more than 3,000 positions globally since the last retrenchment exercise.

Industry watchers believe the latest job cuts are part of similar workforce optimization attempts to drive profitability as Salesforce heads towards a potential IPO in the future.

Meanwhile, Indian food delivery firm Swiggy also preparing to lay off nearly 350-400 employees across verticals to turn leaner before its own initial public offering. call center staff, corporate employees, and technology teams are expected to be impacted by the right-sizing.

The move comes as funding winter prolongs amid broader economic slowdown worries. Startups looking to list on public markets are cutting costs and jobs to reassure investors.

India ‘Working Closely’ With Canada On Nijjar Murder Probe: Ottawa’s Outgoing Spy Chief

India 'Working Closely' With Canada On Nijjar Murder Probe: Ottawa's Outgoing Spy Chief

India is extending greater cooperation with Canadian authorities on the ongoing investigation into the murder of gangster Hardeep Singh Nijjar, according to outgoing National Security and Intelligence Advisor (NSIA) Jody Thomas.

As she retired on Friday from the key post, Thomas indicated to Canadian media outlets that Delhi was now “working far more closely” with Ottawa to aid the probe by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT).

Her remarks come just months after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s statement in Parliament about alleged Indian involvement in Nijjar’s killing led to a diplomatic crisis between the two countries. Both nations had expelled senior diplomats as relations nosedived.

However, Thomas now says discussions with her Indian counterpart have been productive in resolving tensions. She also credited India’s “tonal shift” approach towards the case as the reason behind warming bilateral ties.

According to her, the IHIT is gathering solid evidence to lay charges soon in the case. Two prime suspects linked to the Najjar shooting in Surrey City are already under police surveillance in Canada.

The murder of Nijjar, considered close to pro-Khalistan groups, has been a major irritant between Ottawa and New Delhi. Trudeau’s insinuation about covert Indian interference on Canadian soil had drawn a strong rebuttal last September.

India had suspended visa services for Canadians and sought parity in diplomatic staff numbers in retaliation. But most measures now stand normalized, even as the Najjar investigation remains a priority.

Senior bureaucrat Nathalie G Drouin will replace Thomas as National Security Advisor on Saturday. She had visited India last August to hold talks on this issue amid efforts to arrest the slide in ties.
