The Delhi High Court is all set to pronounce the verdict on Delhi Chief Minister (CM) Arvind Kejrwal’s plea in connection with the Delhi Excise Policy case at 2:30 PM on Tuesday, 9th April 2024. In his petition, Kejriwal challenged his arrest and was remanded by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case that has been linked to the liquid policy case.

The Enforcement Directorate arrested Arvind Kejriwal, the chief of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), on 21st March 2024. The agency accused Delhi CMs of being the ‘kingpin’ and a key conspirator of the alleged scam in the Delhi Excise Policy case. He was later directed to the ED’s custody and then to judicial custody until 15th April. Kejriwal is currently held up in Delhi’s Tihar Jail.

Last week, on 3rd April 2024, the high court kept the matter reserved after the conclusion of detailed arguments from both sides, the ED and Arvind Kejriwal. During the hearing, Kejriwal questioned the timing of the arrest, which happened just before the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024. CM Kejriwal’s lawyer said, “The timing reeks of democracy issue, level playing field issue…The only object is to humiliate and insult. The true object of the arrest is to disable me,”

Meanwhile, the ED has opposed Kejrwail’s plea, stating that the investigation is still not covered and is in the nascent stages. The ED further claims that AAP is a company under section 70 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. According to ED, Kejriwal’s role is not required in the case. But “what is required to be looked at is that he was responsible for the affairs of the company/party,” the ED was quoted by the legal news portal and Bench as saying.

However, the Bench of Justice Swarna Kanta Sharma has fixed the matter for pronouncement of order at 2:30 PM on Tuesday.

A 22-year-old Pune man, who served as a deck cadet on a merchant ship sailing from Indonesia to Singapore, has gone missing since Friday afternoon while sailing the vessel, his father stated on Sunday.

The missing person, identified as “Pranav Karad,” was working with Wilhelmsen Ship Management India Pvt Ltd for the last six months, as quoted by PTI.

His father, Gopal Karad, stated, “The ship was sailing to Singapore from Indonesia. We got a call on Friday night from the shipping company’s Mumbai office, saying our kid had vanished while he was on board. A search operation is underway to locate him,” and further added, “We are attempting to request assistance from the central government. We have also contacted the police in Pune and Mumbai. Pranav completed a three-year Marine Engineering program at an educational institution in the city,”

Pranav’s family members approached Pune’s police for help. However, the officials directed them to contact Mumbai police as the shipping firm’s office is officially located in Andheri.

In another major incident, a 22-year-old female engineering student from Pune was found murdered in Ahmednagar on April 4. The student has been missing since March 30, 2024. An official informed that three persons kidnaped the student, and a college friend was also one of them. The official further said that the girl was kidnapped for a total ransom of 9 lakh but was later strangulated, and her body was buried on the outskirts of the city. She was pursuing an engineering degree in college in Wagholi year.

The official stated, “A male college friend and two other people met her on March 29 and left her off at her dorm. They brought her to Ahmednagar on March 30. They asked her parents for a transfer of ₹9 lakh. After that, they strangled her, buried her body outside of Ahmednagar, and took her cellphone’s SIM card out,”

The girl’s relatives filed a police complaint, and a probe was started into the whole ase. A few days later, all three accused of the kidnapping and murder were arrested by the police.

AAP’s Ex-MLA Sandeep Kumar Wants Removal of Arvind Kejriwal As Delhi CM in High Court

In a fresh plea against Aam Aadmi (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal retaining his position as the chief minister of Delhi, former AAP MLA Sandeep Kumar went to the Delhi High Court seeking the removal of Kejriwal’s removal. The petition is listed for hearing before Justice Subramonium Prasad in Delhi High Court on Monday.

In his petition, Kumar said that after his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money-laundering case linked to the now-scrapped excise policy for capital, Kejriwal has incurred “incapacity” to perform a chief minister’s functions according to the constitution.

The plea states that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader’s “unavailability” complicates the constitutional mechanism and can never function as the CM from prison according to the Consitution’s mandate.

The petition states “Article 239AA(4) of the Constitution provides for the Council of Ministers with the chief minister at the head to aid and advise the lieutenant governor in the exercise of his functions in relation to matters with respect to which the legislative Assembly has power to make laws. The aid and advice to the lieutenant governor are practically not possible without the chief minister being a free person available to render his aid and advice under the Constitution,”

Kejriwal, who was taken in by the ED on 21st March 2024, is currently lodged in Tihar Jail. The High Court had earlier rejected two public interest litigation pleas that wanted Arvind Kejriwal’s removal from the post of Delhi CM.

On 4th April, a bench of acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet P S Arora refused to acknowledge a PIL based on the issue, stating it was Arvind Kejriwal’s personal desire to go ahead as the CM of the national capital.

Earlier, the judge bench dismissed a similar PIL, observing that the petitioner didn’t show any legal bar that prohibited Arvind Kejriwal from holding the position of CM. It acknowledged that there was no scope for judicial interference in the matter, and it would depend on other organs of the State.

Narendra Modi Has Set Up High Ambitious Economic Goals For Probable Third Term

Indian PM Narendra Modi, confident of winning a national election starting this month, has decided to set an ambitious target of roughly doubling the economy and exports this decade, according to a government document seen by Reuters. Modi has highlighted economic growth as one of his biggest achievements in election rallies and has guaranteed to make the economy the third largest in the world from fifth now if he wins a third term in a row as polls have predicted.

He has already asked officials to finalize plans by May to expand the economy to $6.69 trillion in nominal terms by 2030, from around $3.51 trillion currently, according to an October document. Although short on concrete details of how to achieve that, it has been a basis for official meetings.

When he took the office for a second term five years ago, Modi promised to take the economy to $5 trillion by the current fiscal year, but due to COVID-19 restrictions, meeting that target is essentially impossible now for next year’s Modi’s goal is to raise per capita income to $4,418 from around $2,500, according to documents without specifying the reforms, or spending required to achieve that.

Independent economist Saugata Bhattacharya stated that doubling the economy by the end of the decade will be an incredibly difficult feat, which requires 6%-6.5% growth for the next seven years alongside an inflation of 4.5%. The economy is, however, expected to have grown by 8% in the last fiscal year, which ended March 31. It is the fastest among major countries on the back of strong manufacturing and construction activity driven by government spending. A former senior finance minister official, Subhash Chandra Garg, said that growth projections like the ones in documents are mostly based on backward arithmetical calculations and lack any kind of reform or investment plan.

Garg added “Usually such mental gymnastics based on arithmetic calculations and assumptions are meaningless unless there is serious reform and investment plan to test it for real economy dynamics,”

The rapidly rising death toll in Gaza has captured all the headlines ever since the Israel-Hamas war started in October 2023. With more than 32,000 people dead, mostly innocent women and children, the international agencies have decided to term the war catastrophic for Palestinians in Gaza. One of the latest reports released by the United Nations and World Bank has outlined the financial implications of the Israel-Hamas war as it estimated that $1.8 billion USD worth of critical infrastructure in Gaza has taken damage due to the conflict.

The 1.8 billion dollar amount is 97% of the combined economic output of the West Bank and Gaza in 2022. According to the report, the majority of the damage has occurred in the governorates of Gaza, North Gaa, and Khan Younis.

The report adds, “Over four-fifths of damages are concentrated in the two sectors of residential buildings (72% of the total) and the commerce, industry, and services sector (9% of the total), with the remaining 19% of damages sustained on other critical infrastructure and services such as education, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), health, energy, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), municipal services, and transport,”

The war between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas began on October 7th, 2023, after hundreds of Hamas militants barged into Israel’s territory and ended up killing more than 1,400 people. The Hamas terrorists also ended up taking more than 200 people hostage, and 150 of them are still in the group’s captivity in Gaza,

The interim damage assessment report also mentions the alarming state of food insecurity in Gaza and calls the region on the brink of famine, with acute malnutrition and food insecurity.

Palestinians in Gaza now make up 80% of all the people facing severe hunger or famine worldwide. Palestinians are also getting less than half of the daily water rations required for short-term emergency survival, and further reductions are likely as fuel supplies drop. More than a million people have now lost their homes.

Goa Police arrested All India Football Federation executive committee member Deepak Sharma on Saturday for physically assaulting two female footballers during Indian Women’s League-2 after the official complaint. Sharma was asked to refrain from all football-related activities till the conclusion of the probe in the case.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Sandesh Chodankar told PTI, “AIFF executive committee member Deepak Sharma was called for questioning during the day after receiving a formal complaint. He was arrested by Mapusa police under various sections, including causing hurt and using force against women, among others,”

Mapusa police station inspector Shitakant Naik stated that Sharma will be in custody for the night and will be brought to court on Sunday for remand. The matter received a strong response from the Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Anurag Thakur, who ordered AIFF to take strict legal action against the accused personnel.

Union Minister Anurag Thakur said, “The ministry has further directed AIFF to take strong legal action and inform the ministry about actions taken. The safety and security of players are our utmost priority,”

The matter came to light after two female footballers from the India Women’s League 2 club Khad FC complained against Sharma on Friday. Deepak Sharma is the Himachal Pradesh Football Association’s general secretary and deputy chairman of AIFF’s competitions committee.
The female footballers faced assault after they went to their hotel rooms to boil eggs. According to reports, Sharma went into their rooms and slapped them.

The footballers alleged that Deepak Sharma used to remain in “an inebriated state” and carried alcohol while going with women footballers. Moreover, he drank alcohol in front of female footballers.

A fresh plea has been filed in Delhi High Court on Friday for removing Arvind Kejriwal from the post of Delhi Chief Minister. The petition came a day after the Delhi High Court dismissed a similar plea.

On Thursday, the Delhi High Court rejected the public interest litigation wanting the removal of Kejriwal from the post of Delhi Chief Minister, saying the petitioner did not showcase any legal provision restricting Aam Aadmi Party leader from running the government after arrest to warrant any judicial interference.

The Bench comprising acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet PS Arora stated “”There may be difficulties. It will be practically very, very difficult. We accept all those. (But) Is there any scope for judicial interference in this, on this issue?”

The court concluded “”This court is of the view that there is no scope for judicial interference vis-a-vis the relief sought for removal of respondent no. 4 (Kejriwal). It is for the other wings of the government to examine in accordance with the law,”

Calls for Arvind Kejriwal’s removal as the chief minister of the national capital grew after he was arrested in connection with a money laundering case linked to the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy. The Enforcement Directorate arrested Kejriwal on 21 March 2024. He was sent to ED custody until 28 March, and his custodial remand was extended on Thursday, 1 April 2024.
Several opposition leaders have been protesting Kejriwal’s arrest, accusing the BJP-ruled center of misusing the central agencies ahead of the Lok Sabha elections 2024.

Official Data Reveals UK’s Economy Saw a Shallow Recession in 2023

Britain’s economy saw a shallow recession last year, official figures confirmed on Thursday, leaving Prime Minister Rishi Sunak with a challenge to reassure his voters that the economy is safe with him before an expected election later this year. The country’s GPD shrank by 0.1% in the third quarter and by 0.3% in the fourth from the preliminary estimates, the Office for National Statistics said on Thursday.

The figures will be quite disappointing for Sunak, who has been accused by the opposition Labor Party far ahead of overseeing ‘Rishi’s recession.’ Martin Beck, chief economic advisor at EY ITEM Club, said “The weak starting point for GDP this year means calendar-year growth in 2024 is likely to be limited to less than 1%,”

Britain’s economy has shown signs of starting the year on a stronger footing, with monthly GDP growing at 0.2% in January and unofficial surveys suggesting growth continuing in February and March.
Tax cuts announced by Finance Minister Jeremy Hunt and expectations of interest rate cuts are likely to help the economy in 2024. However, Britain is one of the slowest countries to recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. At the end of last year, its economy was just 1% bigger than in late 2019, with only Germany faring worse among the Group of Seven nations.

The economy grew just 0.1% in all of 2023, its weakest performance since 2009, excluding the peak-pandemic year of 2020. The Bank of England has said inflation is moving towards the point where it can start cutting the rates. It expects the economy to grow just by 0.25% this year, although the official budget forecasters expect a 0.8% expansion.

BoE policymaker Jonathan Haskel stated in an interview in Thursday’s Financial Times that rate cuts were a “long way off” despite dropping his advocacy of a rise at last week’s meeting.
