India Considering to Relax Rice Export Restrictions

0

India, the world’s leading rice exporter, may ease restrictions on exporting certain varieties to prevent a surplus before the new crop hits the market in October, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The government is considering permitting white rice exports with a fixed duty, said the sources, who requested anonymity due to the confidential nature of the discussions. Additionally, authorities may remove the 20% tax on parboiled rice exports and instead impose a fixed levy to curb under-invoicing of shipments, they noted.

Such measures could help reduce benchmark Asian rice prices, which soared to a 15-year high in January after India began restricting key rice varieties in 2023. This would benefit countries in West Africa and the Middle East that depend heavily on India for their rice supplies.

A spokesperson for the food and commerce ministries declined to comment immediately.

India’s total rice exports dropped 21% year-on-year to 2.9 million tons in the first two months of the fiscal year starting April 1, according to government data. Exports of non-basmati rice decreased by 32% to 1.93 million tons during the same period.

Indian farmers are currently planting their main rice crop for the next harvest as the monsoon season begins. Planting will peak in July, and the grain will be harvested from late September.

The acreage stood at 6 million hectares (14.8 million acres) as of July 8, a 19% increase from a year earlier, according to the farm ministry, following a recovery in the monsoon after last month’s deficient rains.

PM Modi Arrives in Moscow For Summit Talks with Putin

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Moscow on Monday, beginning his two-day state visit to Russia and then Austria.

Upon his arrival at the Moscow airport, the prime minister was honored with a guard of honor. He was welcomed by Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister (1st DPM), Denis Manturov, who is senior to the Deputy Prime Minister who greeted Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit to Russia.

Manturov will accompany PM Modi to the hotel from the airport in the same car.

“Over the next three days, I will be in Russia and Austria. These visits are a wonderful opportunity to deepen ties with these nations, with whom India shares a time-tested friendship. I also look forward to interacting with the Indian community living in these countries,” the prime minister posted on X ahead of his departure to Russia.

This marks Prime Minister Modi’s first visit to Russia in five years, the last being in 2019 for an economic summit in Vladivostok. It is also his first visit since the Ukraine war began in 2022.

During the 22nd India-Russia annual summit on Tuesday, Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to discuss expanding bilateral relations in areas such as trade, energy, and defense. The annual summit is the highest institutional dialogue mechanism in the strategic partnership between the two countries, with 21 summits having taken place alternately in India and Russia so far. The last summit was held in New Delhi on December 6, 2021, with Putin visiting India for the event. Putin has visited India nine times as the head of the Russian state.

Modi and Putin last held bilateral talks on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on September 16, 2022. During that meeting, Modi emphasized the need to end the conflict in Ukraine, stating, “Today’s era is not of war.” The prime minister has had several phone conversations with both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, advocating for a diplomatic resolution to the crisis. India has not condemned Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine and maintains that the conflict should be resolved through diplomacy and dialogue.

Following his visit to Russia, Modi will travel to Austria on Tuesday, marking the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Austria in over 40 years.

Javed Akhtar Hits Back At ‘Gaddar’ Remarks

0

Javed Akhtar is well-known for his outspoken views on socio-political issues. Recently, the lyricist-screenwriter tweeted about the upcoming US presidential election. However, when attacked by a group of trolls, the former Rajya Sabha MP responded firmly, criticizing their lack of knowledge about history and politics.

The Padma Bhushan recipient tweeted, “I am a proud Indian citizen and till my last breath I will remain so but I have one common fact with Joe Biden. Both of us have exactly equal chance of becoming the next president of USA.”

In response to his post, a user commented, “Your father was instrumental in creating Pakistan to have a nation just for Muslims. Then, under the guise of being a progressive writer, he chose to remain in India.

You are the son of a traitor who divided our nation along religious lines. Now you say anything, but this is the truth.” Javed shot back, captioning his post, “It is difficult to decide whether you are totally ignorant or a complete idiot. From 1857, my family has been involved with the freedom movement and has gone to jails and Kala Pani, while most probably your forefathers were licking the boots of the British government.”

Delhi CM Kejriwal’s Wife Talks About His Arrest; People Must Stand Up

0

New Delhi: On Saturday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal, claimed that her husband was the victim of a “deep political conspiracy” and urged the public to support him. She warned that without such support, no educated and honest person would be inclined to join politics.

In her first video message following the Lok Sabha results, she alleged that Kejriwal was arrested by the ED in the excise policy case based on a “false” statement by a witness. She reiterated the Aam Aadmi Party’s allegations against Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy, who was recently elected to the Lok Sabha on a TDP ticket, and his son, Raghava Magunta, an accused-turned-approver.

She described Kejriwal as a normal, educated, patriotic, and staunchly honest man, emphasizing that if the people of Delhi do not support him, no educated and honest individual will venture into politics.

According to Sunita Kejriwal, the ED arrested Arvind Kejriwal based on the statement of TDP MP Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy. She claimed that Reddy changed his statement to the ED about his meeting with the Delhi Chief Minister after his son, Raghava Magunta Reddy, was arrested and denied bail.

Sunita Kejriwal alleged that initially, MSR said he met the Delhi Chief Minister on March 16, 2021, regarding land for a charitable trust he wanted to open in Delhi. However, he changed his statement on July 17, 2023, following his son’s arrest. She questioned the plausibility of asking for money in front of 10-12 people, as MSR claimed in his altered statement.

Similar allegations had been made by AAP leader Sanjay Singh in April. No immediate reaction was available from the ED or MSR.

Sunita Kejriwal claimed that even after his son’s arrest, Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy gave several statements but maintained his original claim about meeting Kejriwal regarding land for his family charitable trust. She mentioned that Raghav Magunta’s wife attempted suicide due to shock, and his elderly mother’s health deteriorated, leading to MSR changing his statement.

She pointed out that MSR’s meeting with Kejriwal lasted barely 4-5 minutes, and it was his first and last meeting with the Chief Minister. She questioned the logic of asking for money from a stranger in front of 10-12 people during their first meeting.

Appealing to the public to share her video, Sunita Kejriwal accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of wanting to “finish off” Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party using the ED and CBI.

In response, the BJP accused Sunita Kejriwal of “mastering the art of story-telling” like her husband and of “casting aspersions” on the judiciary. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva criticized her for implying that the judiciary was biased in granting bail based on the statements given.

Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21 in a money laundering case related to alleged irregularities in his government’s scrapped excise policy 2021-22. He is currently in judicial custody after being arrested by the CBI. While the trial court granted him bail on June 20 in the ED case, the Delhi High Court stayed the trial court order on June 25.

Kejriwal had campaigned vigorously against the BJP in the Lok Sabha election in Delhi, portraying it as a vote against his arrest. However, this effort was insufficient as the BJP maintained its winning streak, securing all seven seats in the national capital again, though with smaller victory margins this time.

GORAKHPUR: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reviewed flood-control measures in Gorakhpur on Saturday. He inspected the Malouni Lahesri embankment of the Rapti River and expressed satisfaction with the timely implementation of work plans, noting that the preparations were yielding positive results.

Accompanied by Water Resources Minister Swatantra Dev Singh, CM Yogi first visited Duhiya village to inspect the embankment strengthening work valued at ₹6.57 crore. He remarked that the Malouni Lahesri embankment was highly sensitive but had been successfully strengthened by June 25, saving lives and crops. He also mentioned that controlling flood-prone areas helps resolve waterlogging issues in low-lying regions. Residents of vulnerable flood areas welcomed Yogi and expressed their gratitude.

The Chief Minister then inspected the ongoing construction of the flyover from Transport Nagar to Daoudpur and directed officials to complete it before the deadline. He also reviewed the construction of the six-lane road and instructed officials to ensure that these projects do not cause waterlogging problems for residents.

State Minister for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary and State Minister for Rural Development Kamlesh Paswan visited the Gorakhnath temple on Saturday morning to seek blessings from CM Yogi Adityanath. They thanked the CM for his support in their victories in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and discussed various development schemes for Uttar Pradesh from their respective departments.

Earlier, the Chief Minister held a janta darbar at Digvijaya Nath auditorium, where he listened to visitors’ grievances. He took their applications and forwarded them to the concerned officials for immediate resolution. Most complaints from women visitors were about land encroachment and illegal possession by influential people. CM Yogi expressed concern and directed officials to address these issues firmly.

India’s New Light Tank to Boost Mountain Warfare Capabilities

0

In a significant milestone for the local defense manufacturing sector, India unveiled a light tank on Saturday, designed for rapid deployment and high mobility in mountainous regions. This tank is expected to be ready for induction into service by 2027, bolstering the army’s position against Chinese forces along the contested Line of Actual Control (LAC), according to officials.

The 25-tonne tank has been jointly developed by Larsen & Toubro and the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) under Project Zorawar in approximately two years to fulfill the Indian Army’s requirement for 354 light tanks. It will now undergo rigorous trials.

An official noted that the tank was developed from scratch in the shortest possible time.

“It will be capable of operating in challenging conditions along the LAC with minimal logistical support. The tank will demonstrate its capabilities in summer and winter trials conducted in deserts and mountains over the next two years before it goes into production,” he said.

DRDO chief Samir V. Kamat reviewed the first prototype of the tank at L&T’s Hazira facility in Gujarat on Saturday, where it performed basic maneuvers.

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army has deployed several modern tanks, including light tanks with a high power-to-weight ratio, along the LAC. The military standoff between India and China in eastern Ladakh is now in its fifth year, with no resolution in sight, though India hopes ongoing negotiations will restore the status quo ante of April 2020.

The Indian Army has deployed heavier Russian-origin T-72 and T-90 tanks in the Ladakh region, but these have limitations as they are designed for operations in plains and deserts. The need for light tanks with adequate firepower, protection, surveillance, and communication capabilities became apparent after the border dispute began, officials said. The new capability will cost around ₹17,500 crore.

“The tank can be transported by air and is capable of amphibious operations. It can fire at high angles of elevation and perform the role of limited artillery,” said a second official, adding that the platform’s modular design can accommodate future upgrades.

The tank is expected to feature cutting-edge technologies, including artificial intelligence, drone integration, active protection systems, and superior situational awareness.

The tank is named Zorawar after the legendary general Zorawar Singh, who led the Dogra forces to victories in Ladakh and Tibet between 1834 and 1841. In May 1841, he led a 5,000-strong Dogra force into Tibet, quickly defeating Chinese forces and capturing their Mantalai flag.

In December 2022, the defense acquisition council granted its acceptance of necessity (AoN) and approved defense projects worth ₹84,328 crore to enhance the combat potential of the armed forces with new military hardware, including light tanks. Under India’s defense procurement rules, AoN by the council is the first step toward acquiring military hardware.

In a request for information published in April 2021, the army stated that the light tank must be versatile enough to operate in diverse terrain conditions and address various threats and the equipment profiles of the country’s adversaries.

In a subsequent note, the army described the light tank as a lethal and survivable platform with significant mobility advantages in high-altitude areas.

“These tanks, with superior mobility, all-terrain agility, multi-layered protection, precision lethal firepower, and real-time situational awareness integrating niche technology, will provide multiple options for rapid operational deployment, enabling the army to conduct operations across the entire spectrum of conflict,” the note said.

The tank was unveiled a day after Defense Minister Rajnath Singh announced that India had recorded its highest ever growth in the value of local defense production in the fiscal year 2023-24, reaching almost ₹1.27 lakh crore, a 17% increase from the previous year.

Of the total defense production value in 2023-24, 79.2% was contributed by defense public sector undertakings and other PSUs, with the remaining 20.8% coming from the private sector.

Minor Student Stabs Teacher to Death in Assam

0

Hours after a teacher reprimanded a minor at a coaching center in Sivasagar, Assam, the student allegedly stabbed the teacher to death inside the classroom on Saturday, a police officer reported.

The minor student has been taken to the local police station in Sivasagar.

Police stated that the teacher had scolded the class 11 student earlier in the day over an issue.

“We arrived at the coaching center after receiving information about a stabbing incident. Preliminary reports indicate that a student stabbed his teacher. There was a significant amount of blood in the classroom, and the knife was also found there,” the officer said.

The teacher was transported to the hospital in critical condition, where he was declared dead.

The officer mentioned that the incident occurred during the last period of the day when other teachers had already left.

“We have taken the student into custody. We do not yet know what triggered the incident. We are in the process of collecting CCTV footage,” the officer added.

A classmate of the accused claimed that the teacher had scolded him earlier in the day over some matter.

The accused had left for school after being scolded and later returned. When he entered the classroom, the teacher confronted him again, according to the classmate, who added that the student then attacked the teacher with a knife.

Andrew Tate Free to Get Out Of Romania but not EU

0

A Romanian court on Friday eased travel restrictions on controversial influencer Andrew Tate and his brother, allowing them to travel within the European Union while awaiting trial for human trafficking and rape charges.

US-born Briton Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan, who claim innocence, are accused of forming an organized criminal network in early 2021 in Romania and Britain.

The former professional kickboxer and his brother face charges of human trafficking, rape, and forming a criminal group to sexually exploit women.

The Bucharest court on Friday ruled to “replace the obligation of the defendants not to leave the territory of Romania with the obligation of the defendants not to leave the territorial limit of the European Union.”

They can only leave the EU zone with “prior authorization from the judge of the preliminary chamber or the court,” the court stated.

The brothers will still be under judicial supervision, requiring them to regularly appear before authorities.

The Tates’ spokeswoman, Mateea Petrescu, welcomed the ruling, stating her clients could now “pursue professional opportunities without restriction.”

At the end of 2022, the Tates were arrested in Romania and spent three months in detention before being indicted in June 2023.

Prosecutors allege that 37-year-old Tate, his brother, and two women set up a criminal organization and sexually exploited several victims.

The victims were allegedly forced into pornographic acts.

The Tates also face rape and assault allegations in separate cases in Britain, where authorities issued a European arrest warrant.

In March, a Romanian judge ordered the brothers’ extradition to the UK to face these accusations, but only after the separate Romanian criminal case against them is concluded.

A trial date in Romania has not yet been set.

Tate moved to Romania years ago after starting a webcam business in the UK.

In 2016, Tate appeared on the “Big Brother” reality television show in Britain but was removed after a video emerged showing him attacking a woman.

He then turned to social media platforms to promote his divisive views.

Giving tips on how to be successful, along with misogynistic and sometimes violent maxims, his videos have made him one of the world’s best-known influencers.

Ola’s Bhavish Aggarwal Talks About Tesla’s Investment in India

0

Bhavish Aggarwal, the founder and CEO of Ola, remarked that Tesla’s decision not to invest in the Indian market is a significant loss for the Elon Musk-owned company, not for India. He highlighted the rapid growth of the Indian electric vehicle (EV) and lithium industries, suggesting that it may be too late for Tesla to enter the market in the future.

Aggarwal posted on X (formerly Twitter): “If true, this is Tesla’s loss, not India’s. While the Indian EV and Lithium ecosystem is early, we’re gaining momentum quickly. It’ll be too late for Tesla when they look at India seriously again in a few years.”

This statement follows a Bloomberg report indicating that Tesla has not pursued inquiries with officials in New Delhi and is no longer expected to invest in India. This report comes weeks after Elon Musk postponed his visit to India, citing financial issues. Tesla has no plans to allocate new funds to the Indian market.

Tesla recently reported a second consecutive decline in global deliveries for this quarter and faces growing competition from China. The company also announced job cuts, stalled the sale of its flagship Cybertruck, and delayed the construction of its plant in Mexico.

The report also mentioned that the Indian government might now focus on domestic companies like Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors to enhance EV production in the country.

Meanwhile, Ola is set to debut on the market after the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) approved Ola Electric’s IPO in June 2024. The IPO will feature a primary issuance of ₹5,500 crore and a secondary sale of ₹1,750 crore. This approval makes Ola Electric the first EV startup to receive such clearance from the market regulator.

Congress Believes Government is Sabotaging Children’s Education

0

On Friday, the Congress criticized the Union government, accusing the Education Ministry of “sabotaging” children’s education due to delays in printing Class 6 textbooks.

“Despite the school year starting, the NCERT – or as I call it, the National (read Nagpur) Council of Educational Research and Training – has failed to publish new Science, Mathematics, and Social Sciences textbooks for Class 6 students,” Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh posted on ‘X’.

Ramesh alleged that the National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC) has not yet finalized the syllabus and textbooks, and it will take another 10 to 15 days to print them. He also claimed that officials anticipate a two-month delay before the books are available to students.

According to PTI, the new textbooks, which were supposed to be introduced in April, are still not on the market. Although Class 3 textbooks are available, only English and Hindi textbooks have been released for Class 6, and this in the middle of the academic session.

In response to the NEET controversy, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan stated, “Congress only wants chaos and confusion.”

The Ministry of Education (MoE) formed the NSTC last July to create new textbooks for Classes 3 to 12 with a February deadline. However, the NSTC decided to change textbooks only for Classes 3 and 6.

“For the 2024-25 academic year, new and engaging textbooks will be introduced for Classes 3 and 6. The textbook development work is in the final phase, and nine textbooks for Grades 3 and 6 are already available. The remaining eight will be available very soon,” a senior Ministry of Education official said, according to PTI.

“Either the rot runs deep, or the incompetence scales new heights every day!” Ramesh remarked, noting that NCERT has yet to receive the drafts of the new Social Science, Mathematics, and Science books for Class 6 from the NSTC.

On Thursday, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan reviewed the progress of school textbooks under the New Curriculum Framework (NCF), reported PTI.
