US President Donald Trump on Thursday claimed that Iranian negotiators are eager to reach an agreement, even as Tehran maintains that it is only reviewing Washington’s proposal. He alleged that Iran has been severely weakened militarily and suggested that its representatives are pressing for a deal despite their public stance.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump described the negotiators as unusual and insisted they are seeking an agreement urgently. He warned that they need to act quickly, adding that delays could lead to consequences that cannot be reversed.
His remarks come at a time when signals from Washington and Tehran remain inconsistent regarding efforts to end the ongoing conflict. Trump has repeatedly indicated that a deal is within reach, even though Iran has rejected a proposed ceasefire plan put forward by the United States.
According to reports, the US proposal includes easing sanctions on Iran in exchange for curbs on its nuclear programme, restrictions on missile capabilities and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes.
Iran, however, has presented its own conditions through state media. These include an end to the targeting of its officials, assurances that no further military action will be taken against it, compensation for damages caused during the conflict and recognition of its authority over the Strait of Hormuz.
The conflict has already resulted in significant casualties across the region. Reports indicate that more than 1,500 people have been killed in Iran and nearly 1,100 in Lebanon, while fatalities have also been recorded in Israel and other areas. Thirteen US military personnel have lost their lives, and millions of people in Iran and Lebanon have been displaced.
Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, tensions remain high, with missile strikes and air raids continuing across the region and no clear resolution in sight.
