KKR’s Shah Rukh Khan Pays Heartfelt Tribute as Andre Russell Retires from IPL

Kolkata Knight Riders co-owner Shah Rukh Khan posted an emotional tribute to Andre Russell following the all-rounder’s announcement Sunday that he is retiring from Indian Premier League playing duties after 12 seasons with the franchise.

Russell confirmed he will transition to KKR’s support staff as the team’s new “Power Coach” for the 2026 season while continuing to play in T20 leagues worldwide and remaining part of other Knight Riders franchises globally.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Heartfelt Message

Shah Rukh Khan acknowledged Russell’s contributions to KKR through social media, emphasizing the player’s unique connection to the franchise. “Thank you for the wonderful memories, Andre. Our Knight in shining armour!!! Your contribution to @KKRiders is one for the books… and here’s to another chapter in your fantastic journey as a sportsman… The power coach – passing down the wisdom, the muscle and of course the power down to our boys in purple and gold… And yes, any other jersey would indeed look weird on you my man… Muscle Russell for life! Love u… on behalf of the team and everyone who loves the sport!!” the KKR co-owner posted on X.

Distinguished IPL Career

Russell, who has participated in every IPL season since 2012, initially represented Delhi Daredevils during his first two editions before joining KKR. The West Indian all-rounder established himself as a formidable force known for explosive batting and crucial wicket-taking ability.

Across 140 IPL matches, Russell accumulated 2,651 runs at a remarkable strike rate of 174.18, including 12 fifties. His bowling contributions were equally impressive, claiming 123 wickets at an economy rate of 9.51 with one five-wicket haul.

Transition Timing

Russell’s retirement announcement came one day after Faf du Plessis, 41, declared he would skip this year’s IPL edition to participate in another league. KKR did not retain Russell ahead of the IPL 2026 mini auction, setting the stage for his transition to coaching duties.

The move allows Russell to leverage his extensive experience while maintaining his playing career in other T20 competitions globally, ensuring his expertise benefits the next generation of Knight Riders players through his new coaching role.
