Leonardo DiCaprio is stepping into a project that he says feels like the fulfillment of a long-held wish. Talking about his new film One Battle After Another, the actor revealed, “I’ve been wanting to work with him (Paul Thomas Anderson) for 20-some-odd years now, and to be able to do a film about this subject at this point in time is very meaningful to me.”
The film is the brainchild of Paul Thomas Anderson, who not only wrote and directed it but also serves as producer. Alongside DiCaprio, the cast boasts Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and Chase Infiniti, bringing together an ensemble of heavy hitters.
For DiCaprio, though, the biggest draw was the chance to finally team up with Anderson. “More than anything, he drew me to this project. To do this film with Paul is very special. He’s a filmmaker that as a writer-director has been such a unique and profound voice of his generation, and is one of the great filmmakers of his time. I’ve known about him ever since I saw Hard Eight many years ago, and we had talks early on about Boogie Nights, so I’ve watched his incredible career blossom,” the actor shared.
The story places DiCaprio in the role of Bob, a disillusioned revolutionary who has gone into hiding, weighed down by paranoia. His only constant is his strong-willed daughter Willa, played by Chase Infiniti. Their fragile world collapses when Bob’s old enemy, portrayed by Sean Penn, reappears after more than a decade, and Willa mysteriously vanishes. What follows is a tense, emotional reckoning with the past, set against Anderson’s signature blend of suspense, moral conflict, and raw humanity.
DiCaprio praised the screenplay for its depth, saying Anderson once again crafted characters that linger in the mind. “There are so few filmmakers that have an unexpected way of tackling different subjects, and there’s always such mystery and intrigue, the element of the unknown with his characters and his stories, that makes you want to continue watching his work. He brought this film to me—it was something he was working on for many years—and I simply jumped at the opportunity to be able to collaborate with him,” DiCaprio said.
