Google Rolls Out Gemini App Interface Updates with Redesigned Prompt Bar

Google has implemented several design modifications to its Gemini app, focusing on improved user experience and space optimization, with the most significant change targeting the prompt input interface.

Google Gemini’s Open-Box Design Replaces Traditional Input Field

The app’s prompt bar has undergone a notable transformation from its previous rectangular box design. The new interface features what Google describes as an “open-box style, with a top lid but no sides or the bottom.” This redesign allows users to input additional characters within the same visual space while improving overall screen real estate management.

First identified by 9to5Google on Wednesday, the updated design is currently available on Android devices, with iOS implementation expected to follow. The new prompt box incorporates a curved top edge that extends to the device’s screen boundary before disappearing, eliminating traditional side and bottom borders.

Enhanced Tool Access and Organization in Google Gemini

Google has also restructured how users access Gemini’s various features. Previously, all tools were accessible through a single “+” icon on both the website and mobile app, revealing options including image generation, video generation (for paid subscribers), Deep Research, and Canvas.

The updated interface now displays the most frequently used feature as a separate chip or button, while remaining tools are consolidated under an ellipsis (three horizontal dots) icon. This change aims to streamline user workflow by providing immediate access to popular functions while maintaining organized access to additional features.

Disclaimer Repositioning

Another subtle but significant change involves the placement of Gemini’s accuracy disclaimer. The warning “Gemini can make mistakes, so double-check it” has been relocated from the bottom of the prompt bar to the bottom of AI responses, positioned beneath the like, dislike, feedback, and share buttons.

This disclaimer was originally designed to alert users about potential AI hallucinations and encourage verification of information. While the warning remains present, its new placement reduces visual clutter in the input area while maintaining user awareness about AI limitations.

The updates reflect Google’s ongoing efforts to refine user interaction with its AI assistant, emphasizing both functionality and interface optimization across the Gemini platform.
