Former U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Monday that the tariffs imposed on India due to its purchase of Russian oil have delivered a major economic setback to Russia. Referring to India as either the largest or second-largest buyer of Russian oil, Trump suggested that the trade penalties significantly disrupted Russia’s financial stability.
During a press conference at the White House, Trump argued that his administration’s tariffs, particularly those targeting nations engaged in energy trade with Russia, have intensified the economic strain on Moscow. According to him, Russia’s economy has taken a hit under the weight of these global measures.
Trump had recently approved a steep 50% tariff on Indian goods, implemented in two stages. The initial 25% duty was introduced on July 30, followed by an additional 25% hike on August 7. The tariff hike was formalized through an executive order titled Addressing Threats to the US by the Government of the Russian Federation.
Speaking about Russia’s economic state, Trump remarked, “Russia needs to focus on rebuilding its own country. It’s a massive nation with enormous potential—11 time zones, can you believe it? But their economy isn’t doing well right now. It’s been seriously disrupted by the current tariffs.”
Without directly naming India, Trump pointed out that pressuring one of Russia’s top oil clients through trade restrictions sent a clear message. “It doesn’t help Russia when the U.S. President tells one of their biggest oil buyers we’re slapping a 50% tariff on you. That was a big blow,” he said.
Trump is also scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, August 15, in an attempt to push for a ceasefire in Ukraine, more than three years into the conflict. The meeting will mark Putin’s first visit to the U.S. since 2015.
Commenting on the location, Trump said, “I think it’s very respectful that the Russian President is coming to us. We’re not going to a third country or to Moscow. I expect it to be a productive discussion.”
He also mentioned future plans to connect with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. “The next step will be a direct conversation between Zelensky and Putin—or the three of us, if needed. I’ll be involved if they want me there,” Trump added.
