Bihar Boosts Pay for Village Health Staff Months Before State Elections

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday declared a notable increase in monthly incentives for rural health workers, just months ahead of the assembly elections. ASHA workers in the state will now receive ₹3,000 per month—triple the previous amount—while “Mamta” workers assisting in childbirth will earn ₹600 per delivery, up from ₹300.

Sharing the update on social media platform X, Kumar highlighted the contributions of grassroots health workers in improving healthcare access across Bihar. “Since taking office in 2005, our government has made healthcare a key focus. ASHA and ‘Mamta’ workers have played an essential role in bringing medical services to villages,” he posted.

He added that the increase was made to acknowledge their ongoing service in strengthening healthcare delivery in remote areas.

Reacting to the announcement, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav claimed that the groundwork for the incentive hike had already begun during his time as Bihar’s health minister. “This raise will uplift their spirits and further improve rural healthcare,” he said.

ASHA workers form the foundation of India’s National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), with one female health worker deployed for every 1,000 residents in rural areas. Officials emphasized that their work is critical for maintaining health infrastructure in villages.
