Vladimir Putin’s Exotic Zoo Diplomacy: Russian Leader gifts animals to North Korea

In an unusual diplomatic gesture, Russian President Vladimir Putin has transferred a menagerie of exotic animals to North Korea, signalling the deepening alliance between Moscow and Pyongyang amid ongoing global tensions.

Russia’s natural resources ministry confirmed the transfer, which included an eclectic collection of wildlife: an African lion, two brown bears, two domestic yaks, five white cockatoos, 25 pheasants, and 40 mandarin ducks.

The animals were transported from Moscow Zoo to Pyongyang Zoo, with official footage documenting their journey via government aircraft.

Not for the first time!

This is not the first instance of animal-based diplomatic exchange between the two leaders. Previously, Vladimir Putin gifted Kim Jong Un 24 purebred horses—reportedly the North Korean leader’s preferred animal—while Kim reciprocated by sending Putin a pair of local dogs.

The animal transfer comes against a backdrop of intensifying geopolitical cooperation between Russia and North Korea. Earlier this year, the two nations signed a mutual defence pact, committing to provide immediate military assistance in the event of an invasion.

Western governments and Ukraine have raised concerns about North Korea’s military involvement in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, alleging that over 10,000 North Korean troops have been deployed to support Russian forces.

What does it signify?

The gift of animals represents more than mere zoological transfer—it symbolizes the personal rapport between Putin and Kim, who have repeatedly emphasized their mutual friendship and political alignment. Both countries currently face significant international sanctions, a situation that has potentially strengthened their bilateral relationship.

While the significance of such diplomatic gifts might seem trivial, they serve as symbolic gestures of goodwill and strategic alignment in the complex world of international relations.

As tensions continue to simmer on the global stage, this unusual exchange of animals offers a glimpse into the unique diplomatic strategies employed by these two nations.
