Saudi Arabia Unveils Plans for $50 Billion ‘World’s Largest Building’ – The Mukaab

Saudi Arabia has commenced construction on The Mukaab, a colossal cubic structure in Riyadh that aims to become the world’s largest building. The ambitious project, estimated to cost $50 billion, will stand 1,300 feet high and 1,200 feet wide, with dimensions vast enough to encompass 20 Empire State Buildings.

Saudi Arabia to build World’s largest building – The Mukaab

The Mukaab, which will feature 2 million square metres of floor space, represents a key component of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s “Saudi Vision 2030” economic transformation plan. This initiative seeks to diversify the Kingdom’s economy beyond oil revenues, targeting a $51 billion increase in non-oil GDP and the creation of 334,000 jobs.

The development will integrate residential units, hotels, offices, retail spaces, and entertainment facilities within its massive frame. Advanced technology will play a central role, with plans for AI-powered experiences and exterior displays similar to the Las Vegas Sphere.

The Mukaab: Architecture & design

Architects have incorporated elements of Saudi Arabia’s cultural heritage into the design. The cubic structure reflects traditional Najdi architecture, known for its mud-brick construction and geometric patterns. The surrounding landscape will mirror the region’s natural wadis or dry riverbeds.

According to official plans, the broader district will include more than 104,000 residential units and 9,000 hotel rooms, along with retail establishments, office complexes, and community spaces.

Resemblance to the Kaaba & Mecca

However, the project has attracted criticism from multiple angles. Some observers have noted The Mukaab’s controversial resemblance to the Kaaba, Islam’s holiest site in Mecca. Human rights organizations have also expressed concerns regarding potential migrant worker exploitation during construction and possible displacement of residents.

The megastructure represents Saudi Arabia’s latest effort to establish itself as a global architectural and technological pioneer. It follows other ambitious projects within the Kingdom’s extensive urban development program.
