Apple Plans Solid-State Button Transition for iPhone 18 Series by 2026, Full Rollout by 2027

Apple is reportedly developing significant hardware modifications for future devices, with plans to replace mechanical buttons with solid-state controls featuring advanced haptic feedback technology beginning with the iPhone 18 series in 2026.

According to tipster Setsuna Digital on Weibo, Apple has completed testing and functional verification of its solid-state button technology, confirming prototypes now operate as intended. The company is preparing for mass production targeting the iPhone 20 series in 2027.

Apple Comprehensive Button Replacement

By 2027, all physical buttons on iPhones—including power buttons, volume keys, action buttons, and camera controls—will transition from mechanical clicking mechanisms to solid-state alternatives, according to the leak.

Rather than physically moving, these buttons will simulate clicks through localized haptic vibration feedback, creating the sensation of pressing traditional buttons while improving durability and water resistance.

Phased Implementation Strategy

Before complete implementation, Apple will begin transitioning with the iPhone 18 in 2026, the tipster indicates. The camera control button will be first to adopt a simplified pressure-sensing design, eliminating its current capacitive sensing layer that detects touch.

In subsequent versions, Apple plans implementing piezoelectric ceramic components capable of creating precise vibrations when pressed, providing realistic tactile feedback without moving parts.

The technology may eventually extend beyond iPhones to future iPad and Apple Watch models, signaling a comprehensive evolution in Apple’s device interaction design philosophy. Since such major interface changes require extensive testing, development remains ongoing.
