Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer has been discharged from a Sydney hospital following treatment for a spleen laceration sustained during the third ODI against Australia, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Saturday, November 1.
Injury Details and Treatment
Shreyas Iyer suffered the injury on October 25, 2025, while fielding during India’s ODI match against Australia. The middle-order batter was attempting a diving catch to dismiss Alex Carey when he fell awkwardly on his left side, resulting in abdominal trauma.
The BCCI issued an official statement explaining the medical situation: “Shreyas Iyer sustained a blunt injury to his abdomen while fielding during the third ODI against Australia on October 25, 2025, resulting in a laceration of his spleen with internal bleeding. The injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested following a minor procedure. He has undergone appropriate medical management for the same.”
Current Status
The cricketer underwent a minor surgical procedure to repair the spleen laceration and arrest internal bleeding. Medical staff quickly identified and addressed the injury after initial concerns escalated when Shreyas Iyer was moved to the Intensive Care Unit.
“He is now stable and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, along with specialists in Sydney and India, are pleased with his progress, and he has been discharged from the hospital today,” the statement confirmed.
Recovery Timeline
Shreyas Iyer will remain in Sydney for follow-up medical consultations before returning to India once doctors clear him for travel. India captain Suryakumar Yadav previously updated that Iyer was responding well and communicating with teammates via text messages.
Medical Acknowledgment
The BCCI expressed appreciation for the medical professionals managing Iyer’s care: “The BCCI extends its heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Kouroush Haghigi and his team in Sydney, along with Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, for ensuring Shreyas received the best possible care for his injury.”
Incident Context
The injury occurred when Iyer, known for his fielding commitment, sprinted backward from the point region and executed a diving catch. He landed heavily, clutching the ball while appearing in immediate pain. Medical staff attended to him on-field before transporting him to a Sydney hospital for evaluation.
The spleen plays vital roles in blood filtration and immune system support, making the injury particularly serious.
