Two decades after initiating significant women’s empowerment schemes, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar continues to rely on a powerful and dedicated political base: women voters. As the Bihar Assembly elections approach, this demographic is once again turning out in large numbers at his campaign rallies, demonstrating consistent support for the Janata Dal (United) leader.
Nitish Kumar’s Support System – Women
At a rally held on Thursday in Rachiyahi village within the Matihani constituency of Begusarai, the overwhelming presence of women was notable. Thousands arrived on foot from nearby villages, with witnesses reporting that women significantly outnumbered men at the gathering. Many observers described the turnout as “spontaneous,” underlining the organic nature of his continued appeal.
Analysts suggest that Kumar’s popularity among women has remained robust, even amid criticism directed at his age and health. Several women attending the rally informed reporters that, despite having grievances regarding inflation and unemployment, Nitish Kumar remained their preferred choice for chief minister. Many also stated they attended simply to gauge his physical fitness.
Nitish Kumar on Women related schemes
During his address, Nitish Kumar strategically highlighted the women-centric schemes launched by his government. He specifically cited the Mukhyamantri Balika Cycle Yojana, which provides free bicycles to schoolgirls, and the guaranteed reservations: 50 per cent for women in panchayats and urban local bodies, and 35 per cent in police recruitment.
He also emphasized the impact of the Jeevika self-help group programme, which has successfully integrated millions of women into microfinance networks, alongside the policy of direct benefit transfers into women’s bank accounts.
Political analysts affirm that women voters were a decisive factor for the NDA alliance during the 2020 Assembly elections, particularly in key regions such as Mithilanchal, Champaran, Tirhut, and Saran. Kumar’s comprehensive welfare measures, ranging from free education for girls to increased pensions for widows and the elderly, are widely credited with cultivating this enduring support base.
As the campaign gains momentum, the ruling JD(U) is clearly relying on the high turnout and solid backing from women voters to help it maintain political influence across critical districts in northern and central Bihar.
