The Ministry of Education has advised schools across India to start using Unified Payments Interface (UPI) for collecting fees, with the goal of making financial transactions smoother, more transparent, and easier to manage.
In a recent communication, the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL) reached out to state and union territory governments, as well as key education bodies such as the NCERT, CBSE, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti. The department urged them to promote digital payment methods in schools as part of efforts to modernize administrative systems and improve the overall efficiency of financial processes.
According to the letter, moving from traditional cash payments to digital methods can benefit both parents and students by providing greater convenience and allowing them to make payments from home. It also reduces manual errors and increases transparency in how schools handle money.
The ministry stated that the initiative is part of a broader plan to modernize education administration, promote financial awareness, and align school operations with the government’s long-term vision of creating a digitally empowered and inclusive education ecosystem under the Viksit Bharat 2047 mission.
Officials further noted that the adoption of UPI systems would help all stakeholders, including students, parents, and school administrators, become more financially aware while encouraging greater participation in India’s expanding digital economy.
