A legal battle has emerged over the estate of Sunjay Kapur, drawing in multiple members of his family. At the centre of the dispute is his widow, Priya Sachdev Kapur, who is facing allegations from her stepchildren, born to Sunjay and his former wife, actor Karisma Kapoor. They have approached the Delhi High Court claiming that Priya fabricated Sunjay’s will.

Tensions intensified further over control of the RK Family Trust. Priya, who holds the position of both trustee and beneficiary, issued a formal notice removing Sunjay’s mother, Rani Kapur, from her role as trustee with effect from March 25.

The matter has now reached the Supreme Court of India. According to ANI, the court on Monday sought responses from Priya Kapur and others after Rani Kapur filed a petition asking for the trust to be declared invalid. She has alleged that the trust, originally set up in her name in October 2017, is based on documents that are forged and fraudulent.

A bench comprising Justices J B Pardiwala and Vijay Bishnoi issued notices in the case and encouraged all parties to consider resolving the dispute through mediation. During the hearing, the judges questioned the need for prolonged litigation, especially given Rani Kapur’s age, and advised that mediation could offer a more constructive path forward. The next hearing has been scheduled for May 7.

In her plea, Rani Kapur has also sought an order to prevent Priya Kapur and other defendants, including her grandchildren, from taking any action in connection with the RK Family Trust. She has argued that a series of unlawful transactions, allegedly carried out in coordination with her late son, resulted in her assets being transferred into the trust without her knowledge or consent.

Sunjay Kapur, who served as chairman of Sona Comstar, had a high-profile personal life alongside his business career. He married Karisma Kapoor in 2003, and the couple had two children, Samaira and Kiaan, before separating in 2014. Their divorce was finalised in 2016. He later married Priya Sachdev Kapur, and the couple had a son, Azarias.
