A man was arrested for allegedly carrying a firearm illegally onto the district court campus and assaulting a woman with whom he had a legal dispute.
The man, identified as Chandrapal Singh, raised concerns about security on the premises when he entered the court campus with a firearm.
Chandrapal Singh, a resident of Semra Gauri under the Madiyaon police station limits, hails from Izzat Nagar in Bareilly.
According to reports, Chandrapal arrived at the district court in a four-wheeler and parked in a space reserved for judicial officers. He managed to enter the court campus with a pistol through the parking area entrance.
Inside the court, Chandrapal allegedly assaulted Pushpa Anil, with whom he had a legal dispute. As Pushpa raised the alarm, her lawyer intervened and apprehended Chandrapal.
Upon receiving information, the Wazirganj police arrived at the court and took Chandrapal into custody.
Station House Officer Deepak Pandey stated that Chandrapal was arrested based on Pushpa Anil’s complaint and for carrying a firearm illegally inside the court campus.
This incident brings back memories of the sensational murder of gangster Sanjeev Maheshwari ‘Jeeva’ inside a courtroom on June 7, 2023. Maheshwari, accused in the murder case of BJP leader Brahm Dutt Dwivedi, was shot dead by an assailant disguised as a lawyer during court proceedings. Following this, security in district courts across the state was tightened, with the installation of DFMDs and baggage scanners at all entrances.
Anurag Srivastava, the joint secretary of the Central Bar Association of the district court, demanded a review of the court’s security and accountability for the incident. “How can a person carrying a firearm enter the court campus? This is a serious issue,” said Srivastava.
