Delhi Observes Chhath Puja Holiday as CM Announces Yamuna Riverbank Celebrations

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta extended greetings to residents on Sunday as the capital prepared to observe Chhath Puja with a public holiday on Monday, October 27, accompanied by elaborate arrangements for devotees including celebrations along the Yamuna River banks.

Chhath Puja represents a significant Hindu festival primarily celebrated in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh, as well as Nepal. The four-day observance honors Surya, the Sun God, and his consort Usha through traditional rituals and worship.

Delhi Holiday Arrangements

According to a Chief Minister’s Office statement released Sunday, October 27 has been declared a public holiday in the national capital. Officials simultaneously issued a traffic advisory to manage expected congestion during festival observances.

Schools across Delhi remain closed for the occasion, with most private colleges also shutting their doors. Vasant Valley School announced: “Government of Delhi has declared Monday, 27th October 2025 as a holiday on account of Chhath Puja, in place of Tuesday, 28th October 2025, which was earlier declared as a holiday.”

Delhi government offices are closed for the holiday, though private sector offices generally maintain normal operations. Authorities have advised residents to verify travel routes before commencing their journeys due to potential disruptions.

Services and Transportation

All hospitals, emergency services, and public utilities will function normally throughout the holiday. Delhi Metro services, buses, and auto rickshaws will operate on regular schedules to prevent commuter inconvenience.

Yamuna Celebrations

Chief Minister Gupta highlighted the significance of worship opportunities on the Yamuna’s banks in a video message posted on X. “After many years, our brothers and sisters will be able to worship the Sun on the banks of the Yamuna Ji and offer Arghya to the Sun. We have made extensive preparations… Heartiest best wishes to all of you. I pray to Chhathi Maiya that her blessings remain upon us all like this,” she stated.

Gupta confirmed that every ghat features adequate lighting, comprehensive safety measures, and proper drainage facilities. The Health Department has deployed medical teams across celebration sites to ensure devotee safety during the festival.

The arrangements represent significant infrastructure preparation to accommodate the thousands of devotees expected to participate in traditional Chhath Puja rituals along Delhi’s waterfronts.
