Gurugram: A high-speed crash on National Highway-48 near Gurugram claimed five lives early Saturday morning when a Mahindra Thar collided with a road divider while exiting toward the city at 4:30 AM.

The accident occurred at Exit 9 when the overspeeding vehicle lost control and struck the divider directly. Five occupants—three women and two men—died instantly, while one man survived with critical injuries and was admitted to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram.

5 dead in Gurugram Highway Crash

Police sources indicate all victims were wearing pub wristbands, suggesting they had attended a late-night party before the fatal journey. The group had travelled from Uttar Pradesh to Gurugram for work-related purposes.

The crash’s intensity completely mangled the Thar, with debris and bodies scattered across more than 100 meters of highway. Visuals from the accident site revealed the vehicle’s devastating destruction, highlighting the collision’s force.

Gurugram police arrived at the scene, secured the bodies, and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Authorities identified the deceased as Pratishtha Mishra from Rae Bareli, Kapil Sharma from Bulandshahr, Aditya Pratap Singh from Agra, and Gautam from Sonipat, Haryana. The survivor’s condition remains critical at the hospital.

Pattern of Highway Accidents

This incident mirrors a similar tragedy last year when two students died and three were injured in a comparable crash. That accident occurred when a speeding car lost control after a tire burst, causing the vehicle to cross into oncoming traffic.

The 2024 incident saw the car first strike a pole before hitting an oncoming vehicle and subsequently crashing into a motorcycle, injuring the rider. The sequence demonstrated how mechanical failures combined with high speeds can create catastrophic chain reactions.

Safety Concerns

The latest accident raises ongoing concerns about highway safety, particularly during early morning hours when driver fatigue and reduced visibility contribute to accident risks. The presence of pub wristbands suggests potential impairment may have been a factor, though official investigation results are pending.

National Highway-48 serves as a major corridor connecting Delhi and Gurugram, handling significant traffic volumes that increase accident risks when drivers operate vehicles at excessive speeds or under compromised conditions.

The investigation continues as authorities work to determine the exact sequence of events that led to this tragic multiple fatality accident.
