Apple has rolled out the first public beta of macOS Sonoma 14.1, giving non-developers an opportunity to test the upcoming software release ahead of its official launch. This public beta follows closely on the heels of the initial developer beta release.

Joining the macOS Sonoma 14.1 public beta is a straightforward process through the System Settings app’s Software Update section. Interested users must sign up for the beta testing program on Apple’s dedicated website.

What’s New in macOS Sonoma 14.1?

macOS Sonoma 14.1 introduces some noteworthy updates for the Music app. Users will find a new option to favorite songs, albums, artists, and more. While these changes to the Music app are confirmed, other major additions in this beta are yet to be revealed, leaving room for potential feature enhancements as the beta progresses.

These anticipated features include interactive Music widgets, iCloud Sync improvements. It also includes the ability to use Stickers through the Tapback menu in Messages, Intelligent form detection. Enhanced AutoFill for PDF documents and forms, word completion by pressing the space bar, collaborative playlists in the Music app, and a favorite songs playlist are included too.

For users already enrolled in the macOS Sonoma beta program, obtaining the latest beta update is a straightforward process:

  • Go to the Apple menu ().
  • Select “System Settings.”
  • Navigate to “General.”
  • Access “Software Update.”
  • Click “Update Now” to initiate the download and installation of macOS Sonoma 14.1 Beta 1.
  • As is customary with beta updates, your Mac will need to restart to complete the installation process.

Exiting the Sonoma Beta Program:

For those who have already participated in the Sonoma beta program but wish to stop receiving beta updates, the process to opt-out is simple:

  • Go to the Apple menu ().

  • Access “Software Update.”
  • Under “Beta Updates,” select “OFF” to disable beta updates for macOS Sonoma.

Expected Release Timeline

Apple typically undergoes multiple beta versions of system software. And then, releasing a final version to the general public. Thus, macOS Sonoma 14.1 is likely still a month or two away from its official public release.

Currently, the latest stable macOS versions available are macOS Sonoma 14.0, macOS Ventura 13.6, and macOS Monterey 12.7.
