Dealing with dull and fragile hair that refuses to improve despite trying multiple products can be frustrating. While serums, oils and masks often promise quick results, they may not work effectively if your body is lacking the nutrients required for healthy hair. In reality, strong and shiny hair develops from within, and consistent improvements in diet and overall care can lead to visible results over time.
Celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar, known for working with actors such as Kareena Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Shahid Kapoor, has shared simple dietary changes and daily habits that can support better hair health. In a recent Instagram video posted on March 23, she explained practical ways to strengthen hair through everyday choices.
She emphasised that hair condition reflects overall physical health. According to her, extreme dieting or cutting out carbohydrates like rice can harm both the body and hair. She suggested including rice in daily meals, explaining that balanced nutrition supports both weight management and hair strength.
Rujuta also highlighted the importance of consuming local and seasonal fruits such as guava, amla and mangoes. These foods are rich in vitamin C, which helps the body absorb iron more efficiently. Healthy iron levels contribute to improved hair colour, thickness and strength.
She further recommended adding pulses and legumes like moong, arhar and chawli to the diet. These foods provide amino acids, B vitamins and fibre, all of which support overall health and help prevent hair breakage by strengthening it from within.
Another key addition she suggested is halim or aliv seeds. When consumed in traditional forms such as laddoos or kheer, these seeds provide folic acid and other nutrients beneficial for hair and skin. She advised against consuming them in processed forms like quick morning drinks, as they may not offer the same benefits.
In addition to diet, Rujuta stressed the importance of simple hair care practices. She recommended oiling the hair once a week and leaving it on for at least 30 minutes to nourish the scalp. Regular combing can help improve blood circulation, while avoiding excessive styling treatments can prevent long term damage. She also encouraged people to embrace their natural hair texture instead of frequently altering it with heat or chemical treatments.
