US Indicates India-US Trade Agreement Could Be Finalized by Year-End Amid Positive Developments

India-US Trade Agreement: The United States has indicated that negotiations over the long-awaited trade agreement with India could deliver results by year-end, with talks witnessing “a lot of positive developments” after the Donald Trump administration scaled back from its earlier confrontational stance over India’s Russian oil purchases, according to ANI.

Parallel Negotiation Tracks

A senior US official stated Washington is working on two parallel issues with New Delhi—a reciprocal trade agreement and addressing concerns over India’s Russian oil purchases.

“I think we’ve had a lot of positive developments with them recently. We have two things going on with them. Of course, we have a reciprocal trade negotiation, but we also have a Russian oil issue, where we’ve seen market improvement on that end,” the official said Thursday.

India-US Trade Agreement Timeline Expectations

The official noted discussions may deliver results “before the end of the year,” as talks advance at an “encouraging” pace. “I’d like to say we can relax and take a break, but there’s still a lot to do, but there’s a lot of positive progress going on already, and we may have more to come before the end of the year,” they added.

Trade Negotiations Scope

Reciprocal trade negotiations typically aim to balance tariffs and expand market access between economies. The talks address long-standing irritants including duties on American agricultural and industrial goods, India’s call for restored trade preferences, and greater access for Indian services professionals in the US.

Russian Oil Issue

India’s Russian oil imports have been a contentious point in India-US trade discussions. India has maintained its energy sourcing is guided by national interests and consumer protection needs, defending its right to purchase Russian oil despite US pressure.

Bilateral Trade Volume

Trade between the US and India reached approximately $190 billion in 2024, with both nations expressing ambitions to significantly increase bilateral commerce.

Strategic Context

The positive developments follow a period of tension when the Trump administration imposed 50 percent tariffs on India as punishment for continuing Russian oil purchases. The relationship has since warmed, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaging in multiple conversations with President Trump, including discussions during the Gaza peace summit.

The potential year-end agreement would represent a significant milestone in India-US economic relations, addressing key trade barriers while managing geopolitical complexities around India’s energy security choices.
